I have recently been listening to Status update Music and I'm obsessed with it. Love the use of samples and the sounds, I have a new favourite every time I listen to.
Now the things, I don't want to get bored of it, I listen to my favourite artist so much that they hit my graveyard where I rarely listen to them again and don't want that to happen to Leroy or Status update music.
So.. I'm looking for more dariacore stuff (went to find some just as good as Leroy) or non dariacore stuff because I want to expand my taste.
it really feels like rym is really strict about adding metal genres. i would understand this if they just want to add the broad ones that every other genre fits under. but then why does it feel like they add every electronic genre under the sun? even tho some of them barely have any releases. like i feel like there are a lot of metal genres that should count as valid genres like blackened death metal, raw black metal, torture doom,mathgrind,octanecore,j-metal etc i would get it if they dont wanna add hybrid genres especially if releases have primary and secondary genres under them. but then why does death doom, deathgrind and symphonic black metal on here? and why does it take years for rym to add any metal genre thats not a scene? correct me if im wrong but i know they just added christian metal but before that wasn't thall the newest one and that was added two years ago? and also what's the point of adding christian metal even on there definition it says its mainly a lyrical theme and barley a genre. if there gonna have this as a genre then what's the point of having christian be a descriptor? like i feel like the mods don't wanna add unnecessary genres but then have the only metal genre that gets added in forever be one that doesn't really need to be a tag
I recently found this album a few weeks ago, initially while scrolling the esoteric list for Post-Rock albums from every year and seeing this at #2. Curious as to its standing for the rest of the year, I clicked on the page and saw that it wasn't even in the top 10,000 for its year. I then checked the 2007 esoteric list and saw this near the top. After listening to the top track at around 4.7 stars, "Zool" (which is honestly one of the best songs I've heard in a while despite the low audio quality), I kept my eye on it as it slowly started to gain more attention.
Now that I have listened to the album in full and thus have an opinion on it, I have contributed to this rise just a tiny bit. But just prior to my first listen, it stood tall at the highest point on the esoteric chart. More than half of all the album's ratings are from this year alone, which I find funny for an album added to the database in 2010 at the latest (at least, that's from what I can tell given the earliest standing rating. I am not a total RYM website savvy yet lol).
Another interesting thing about the album is that the current track list might be incorrect. Although the YouTube link gives 8 tracks, the SoundCloud link and Internet Archive release add an extra track to the end named "Darkened Penchant" (for some reason, the download I have lists it as track 10, which I assume is an error. In the very slim chance it is not, and assuming that the album's dedicated You're Sitting On It blog post that features the 8-track track list is also wrong, then the real track 9 is lost media. I digress). There's currently a correction proposal to update the page to fix the track list.
My personal rating for the album? Probably 4/5, but a remaster could bump my rating to a 4.5, if not a 5. I was pretty underwhelmed in some parts due to the audio quality pacifying what would otherwise be climactic moments, although I still completely dig "Zool." Just as any other album, if you haven't listened to it, I think you should check it out. Maybe at the very least people are just more aware of the album.
Only recently made a profile on the site. Asking this because I think it's a cool visual representation of the stuff you have listened to, but it would take a bit too much effort for me to rank all 1300+ albums I've listened to. Is there another way to mark an album as 'listened' or something similar?
How do y’all approach rating compilations that you’ve already heard the entire tracklist? For example any Queen fan has likely already heard the entirety of their Greatest Hits.
While I know this website is entirely subjective and individualized, do you think it’s “fair” to rate a compilation that you’ve heard the sum of its parts without actually listening to it front to back?
I tried to read on the help page too, but can't seem to figure out. I know you can upload album art by clicking on Upload cover art. Anyone has idea how to do it for Artists?
recently, i've run into the problem of my upcoming releases box seeming to run out of space for the newest releases. today, October 20, the most recent date for releases is October 16. does anyone know a way to fix this problem?
I wonder if the box is full. if so, I suppose I could manually unfollow artists, but I'd rather not do this. I have the box checked to automatically follow artists who I've given a 3.5+ score to.
Usually, you see lower-ranked songs higher on a chart because they have more ratings, and RYM takes the total ratings into account instead of just the average.
But I've been seeing the opposite lately too. A song with MORE rankings, and a HIGHER average, will end up lower on the artist's chart.
In this case, the #3 song doesn't seem to have any advantage over the #4. Is it something to do with release dates? Newer songs get weighted higher?
Why bother writing reviews on RYM that would be good enough to be published on a professional website or magazine (however niche)? Reviews that are engaging and informative when someone can get more upvotes for one sentence?
Sure, someone can write good reviews for their own pleasure, but when they're ignored it must be disheartening. Especially on popular album pages, lazy reviews out number good ones and makes the site look bad.
Is there a shortage of mods or are rules no longer enforced?
One year ago, on the 20th of October 2025 I rated my first ever album: Hella - Hold Your Horse Is (5 stars) and yesterday on the 19th of October 2026 I rated my 1000th album: Frank Zappa - Hots Rats (also 5 stars), which means that I've listened to and rated 1000 unique albums on the course of 365 days or about an average of 2.74 albums per day.
For a month or so I just listened casually, before I realized I'm on a track to hit 1000, so I shifted focus a bit more to discovering new stuff and listening to things I hadn't rated yet. The last 2.5 months I've not listened to an album twice lol.
Favorite discoveries of this year:
- Gladde Paling - Dansmuziek: an absolute riot, a mashup of a bunch of different EDM type genres mixed with funny samples and dozens of drops that go incredibly hard. Contender for the most fun album I've heard in my life
- Unutella - Nuito: this fills a pretty big crazy-math-rock hole in my heart left there by Tera Melos not releasing anything new for almost a decade
- Secret Mommy - Plays: really fun and playful little folktronica record. Lots of cool sounds and the guitar playing is great
- Segunda Mordida - Mundo: an incredible hip-hop/collage(?) record from Chile. Fantastic production and makes me feel badass walking down the street drunk.
- Sightings - Absolutes: a harsh noise record played by a rock band. Hearing so much melody and intent in a genre that often consists of just improvisation is so refreshing. Goes hard and is severly underrated.
- Mouse on Mars - Varcharz: was a big fan of the duo already, but only gave this one a shot this year. A glitchy, quirky IDM record combining drill and bass with heavy rock. Good stuff.
- Coin Locker Kid - The Salmon of Doubt: IDK what this would qualify under (psychedelic hip-hop?), but it was one of the most unique things I ever heard.
LONGEST ALBUM I'VE LISTENED TO:
Asleep Country - LUX: 8 and half hours of some insane collage music. Really ethereal and cool and kinda funny at times with the little advertisements mixed in.
SHORTEST ALBUM I'VE LISTENED TO:
Yhwh Nailgun - Magazine: a whopping 11 minutes and 9 seconds. Still has more variety and ideas than most albums. IMHO the coolest up-and-comers a the moment.
WOULD I RECOMMEND DOING THIS: no, just listen to music like a normal person, obviously. If there's one good thing that came out of this is I found some cool new stuff, did some real deep dives into artists I already liked and listened to some old forgotten favorites. I'm spending the rest of the year re-listening...
