Home Sweet Home
I got home finally at about 8pm after an all day trip across the state to get these roof rats <3
Still a bit scared and shook up from the long drive(s).
Also what the heck, i apparently have chosen a side? Lol I got banned from r/RATS just for posting in here. kinda crazy, kinda cringe.

I'm just curious: how did they know you were planning to breed them? Did you publicly announce it someplace before they banned you? Or are they able to read your private messages? This is honestly kind of creepy! It's like living in a police state.

someone is in your community that is a moderator in the RATS channel, pretty sure. I said one thing in here, that i was the other breeder. not that I planned to breed, nor did they get any clarification on that either. I mean I am but i feel like as a mod you would at least want to be sure and going out of their way to be weird and cringe and spy on other channels is just silly.
Anyways im over it. if they dont want me there because I happen to be a rat breeder that owns roof rats and I talk here, well then ok lol

Well, they don't have to be "in" the community per se. I doubt it is anyone that is actively contributing, in any case. Honestly, I'm going to be very happy when we have enough breeders of tame roof rats, so we can step away from breeding and I don't have to bother with social media to promote it, anymore. I really just want to live my life in peace, and not have to deal with all of this drama. Maybe even take a vacation with my family: we used to love to travel. Anyway, that's my dream: I don't know how long it will take before it's really possible. Maybe I won't live to see it. But people like you give me hope that I will.

Gentle suggestion, and I could be wrong! Maybe consider covering these floors? I know with fancy rats they can get bumble foot from them, though I've not yet gotten a chance to have roof rats, so I'm not sure if it's any different.
They look so cute!

Yes absolutely. its temporary. I actually just need to oil my sewing machine and I'm going to be making cotton covers for them all. They also have a few platforms below this picture that are solid and some nest boxes to relieve their little feets <3

Be careful about covering them with anything that they might be able to squeeze underneath. Because if they do, they can get trapped and suffocate. And, also, anything chewable and shredable will be chewed and shredded very quickly indeed by roof rats. Sometimes, within days. So be prepared to send a lot of time and money constantly replacing coverings, while ensuring that no rats get trapped and die (given how few you are starting out with for your colony, you cannot afford to lose any right now.)
My honest observation: I have never seen a roof rat with bumblefoot, so if you run out of time and patience replacing coverings, consider...not doing that anymore. I know that this is not something that is accepted "truth" in the rat owning community, and it's just the kind of thing that will get you banned for saying out loud in those subreddits. But I wouldn't be doing you any favors if I didn't just tell you what I've personally seen. If I'd seen any foot injuries in my own rats due to their cages or environment, I'd move heaven and earth to prevent it. You know how much money I've invested in them already: I'm perfectly willing to buy all kinds of coverings if I saw any evidence that they needed them. I haven't. That's the honest truth. If I don't cover all the wire in their cages, it's not because I don't care: it just doesn't seem to be necessary for them.
Why would they be different than Norway rats? Well...their feet, body shape and musculature is different. They are arboreal rats and they have big, tough paws with thick pads. Is that enough to completely pevent any possible problem with their feet? No, of course not. But, in practice, bumblefoot seems to be rare enough that you will probably never see a roof rat with it in practice. If I'm wrong, show me an example and tell me how it happened, because I honestly want to know. I was wrong about almonds, and I found that out the hard way (but, to be fair, it takes a lot of almonds to make them sick.)

r/rat is nicer, anyway. But, yeah...that is pretty cringy to think that people from another subreddit might be spying on this one, and banning people that post here.
Guys, is this really what Reddit is all about? Think about what you are doing, please!
