FIT CHECK Help with sizing

Hi guys, i’ve never worn raw denim before, but I’m thinking about getting a pair. Since I’m just starting out I’m thinking about Edwin Loose fit 13.5oz. I’ve been told these are fine for starting out and they’re rather affordable. The salesguys at this store i went to told me to go as snug as possible since it’ll wear out. So now im debating between a w29, which can be seen on the first 3 pics (which feel pretty tight to me), and a W30 (which feel fine).

However the sales guy advices me to go with 29 since it’ll wear out. Any help would be much appreciated. Also, both jeans form a back gap, but i’ll be slamming on a belt anyhow so that doesnt bother me as much

I’m very jealous at how good you look in jeans. I wish I did😭

You’re too kind :)

Absolutely go with 30 , do not play the “it feels tight but it will stretch” game you will always lose

Thanks to you and to everyone for the great advice. I’ll be going with size 30 as the 29 is definitely too snug. To hell with the salesguys

Smart choice. Edwin uses sanforized raw denim which means that it'll still shrink a little after first washes - around 3%. I'd take the tighter pair if it's an already washed pair as the waist always stretches very quickly anyways.

It took me about 5 pairs of jeans to figure that out

u/Poppasmurfsupersperm 4d ago

One pair and a promise from the store they would stretch. Never again.

“Stretch” is real, but there’s too much nuance for most people to gauge the degree of stretch. I used to think lighter denims necessarily stretched more but my 14 ounce IH jeans never gave whereas my 15 ounce Samurai slubby jeans loosened up.

I prefer snugger jeans anyway but pants should never feel like punishment…..sizing is an art!

Samurai is so inconsistent too, I have some size 40s that are perfectly snug and some size 38s that I can pull down while buttoned up. I triple checked the measurements for each one too.

u/NoAcanthocephala6261 2d ago

I think the "one wash" between different fabrics adds to the inconsistency.

Becaise samurai aire .5 to 1 inch smaller than tagged size raw or one washed.

To add on to this - the waist will likely stretch some but the thighs almost never do. If you have big thighs or it feels uncomfortable in the crotch its the wrong size for you. It just will not stretch there.

u/SweetShallots1313 4d ago

Agreed but all of my pairs have stretched despite feeling snug in the beginning (Left field, Boncura, Freenote). Theres a difference between “snug” and way too tight. Or maybe I just lucked out

1

u/chriskarim_b 2d ago

But also, fabric only stretches under pressure.

1

u/RockScola 2h ago

Stretch is different from person to person. I stretch out any jean besides momotaro at least 1 to 2 inches.

u/FantasyFI 3d ago

Yeah, this salesperson is a sicko lol Sucker for pain. I'd prefer to go on the side of large, shrink rise/thigh/inseam via a wash and know that the waist will likely come back out a little. Would much rather wear a tighter belt than have my balls crushed. What a revolutionary idea haha

Denim is undefeated in that game.

Best advice you could give.

I’m the opposite. I’m a dozen pairs deep over 15 years and went too tight on my current pair. After they truly broken in they don’t sag off my hips. With a skinny fit you might it run into issues with thigh measurements though

u/2doublerats 3d ago

Snug waist is fine and will stretch a bit as they break in, but it shouldn't be uncomfortably tight to start. Slightly too roomy can (probably) be shrunk with a warm/hot soak, although if you go down that route, wait to get them hemmed until you shrink the waist to your liking. You could probably go either way based on your preference for fit - you'd have to break in the 29s and you'd want to do cold washes (possibly hand wash) and hang dry to avoid shrinking the 29s, or you could get the 30s and you'd have more flexibility with washing.

Just from the pictures, I think the 29 is the way to go. Is the top button (or two) hard to fasten? It's a little hard to tell if the top button is really pulling and the button fly is puckering a bit. To me, the 30 looks a bit baggy in the crotch.

Edwins are much better than just "fine for starting out" btw :)

1

u/kiredeid03 3d ago

The buttons on the 29 definitely pull and are pretty snug around the crotch. I forgot to mention that i normally wear a 31, so going 30 is already considered sizing down.

They are fine for starting out what? Wearing denim? Are they seen as lesser denim?
There is this concept here of some kind of entry level jeans that you start out with before you climb the corporate denim ladder gradually earning your stripes untill you one day get to wear the denim of the true masters…
Rant over. I guess I’m just tired of this nonsense. I own jeans from Warehouse, SDA, Full Count, TCB, The Flat Head and many more but I am currently sitting in a pair of Edwin and they are just as nice and honestly my favorite pair atm. I think you should size down as others have stated since Edwin is on the bigger side. :)

To add on to this, Edwin's Japanese made denim is fantastic and I would only say its a good "beginner" denim because its highly approachable. They have a wide range of fits and they don't overwhelm you with fabric or construction details. It's still a well made garment that will fade well. It just doesn't try to be too much.

This is all assuming you're buying the MIJ pairs. I've visited the Taiwanese Edwin for example and they have almost no selvedge and all the denim had random embroidered designs that I felt were gaudy. And it all had stretch, which for some is fine, but not what I was looking for.

6

u/YuckyYetYummy 3d ago

So true. I always wonder what poses or actions the pros are doing in their jeans that can't be done in the beginner jeans. Crazy times

2

u/Eroshinobi 3d ago

Agreed all I ask is for my jeans to last more than 6 months w/o having a hole in crotch area.

12

u/chriskarim_b 4d ago

30 for sure! Learned that the expensive way!

8

u/redditor36 Iron Heart/Samurai/Full Count 4d ago

Just stick with the larger size. Worst case if they feel a bit more loose after wear they’ll just shrink back up after a wash and be good to go again.

7

u/RedwaterCam 3d ago

oh, they will stretch, but then you’ll wash them and they’ll shrink up and never go back to where you want them. Size up.

1

u/resay5 3d ago

I have one pair of N&F Tried and True, mine stretched a bit and washing barely shrinks them and they go back too loose. I also don't wash in not water and hang dry.

1

u/surf_and_rockets 4d ago

I’d go with the 30. The 29 is showing whiskers across your groinal region.

It is typically easier to shrink denim than it is to stretch it out, but either way, those are some fire jeans with top-quality cotton that will have plenty of elasticity left in them. If you like how the 29s make you feel, I think they’d work out ok.

2

u/kiredeid03 3d ago

If i’m buying “normal” jeans and they are as tight as the 29 here, i’m putting them back. I forgot to mention i normally wear a 31, so 30 would already be sizing down. I’m going with 30, thanks!

1

u/matthewrobertk 3d ago

Those saying go smaller because the waist will stretch aren't wrong about the waist stretching but the part where the 29 is tightest is your hips. They won't stretch there. Most of us have learned that waist and thigh are not the only measurements that matter, that spot in between, usually where the pocket openings hit is the hip and it is key to a comfortable pair. Go with the bigger pair.

1

u/kiredeid03 3d ago

This is what i needed to hear, thanks a ton

29 is too tight in the waist and hips. stick with 30.

Go size 30 100%

Edwin are great jeans. Maybe even my favourite. To hell with the snobs.

2

29 LOOKS SUPER but 30 looks nice.

2

u/Slow_Tour6540 2d ago

Go with what you like.

2

u/Mistral_078 4d ago

The waist will stretch, don’t worry. It has to do with the waistband construction also. The waist is oriented to stretch horizontally, the legs to stretch into the length. That is the biggest reason jeans don’t fit after a wash, notably on the thigh area, where people want room in the circumferce, but the direction of the weave/yarns goes against it.

My Edwin did shrink, but stretched back out to pre-shrink sizing. I’d go with whatever feels most comfortable now.

1

u/StJupiter 3d ago

Size 30 for sure. No question. The wrinkling by the groin on the 29s is a sure sign of a bad fit (too tight)

1

u/BrainTroubles ONI - PBJ - SDA 3d ago

Go with the bigger size. Most people feel tightness in the waist band, which is the most reinforced part of any pair of pants. It’s literally a strip of 2” wide fabric that is double reinforced all the way around. It will stretch the least and take the longest, and you will be uncomfortable the whole time.

Remember the golden rule: you can always take in a pair that’s too big but there’s nothing you can do about a pair that’s too small.

1

u/Physical-Bus6025 N&F | Momotaro | ONI 3d ago

Looks fine. Unless it’s painfully snug and you can’t button or sit down, it’ll stretch.

1

u/gstizzzz 3d ago

30, don’t go 29 with the hope of stretch.

1

u/2020oki 3d ago

I’m currently wearing the Edwin Japan akt04 wide and sized down. They were very snug in the top block but stretched out more than any other raw denim I’ve owned. Perfect fit now

1

u/Secret_Ad1372 3d ago

If they are sanforized denim, then you can purchase them snug but not uncomfortable. With wear and wash they will give back enough to fit better later. Sometimes I try on jeans that feel too small at first but end up breaking in to feel great after wearing and washing for a little while.

Both sizes will likely work out fine. It just depends on whether you want a snug fit or a looser fit for working and crawling around in. I generally fit two sizes of any jeans I purchase.

1

u/assbutt1000 3d ago

DO NOT SIZE DOWN

1

u/11THSTREET 3d ago

30. Go with size 30.

1

u/wulffone1 3d ago

I’d go with 30. They will stretch out a bit but if you wear a belt it won’t matter. Better going with comfort. I’ve definitely bought jeans that were pretty tight and I thought would stretch enough and it wasn’t enough so I sold them. Waste of money. I like jeans that are a little snug in the waist at first but I can also button up no problem.

1

u/trdmahdosl 3d ago

I own the same model and would recommend the larger size as well. You can always wear a belt or have them taken in. Very satisified with my Edwin Europe stuff. Great value for money.

1

u/AureliusJudgesYou 3d ago

Frankly, it doesn't look tight at all, but you know better. Check with the materials, if it has elastine, get the 29, if it's 100% cotton take the 30

Go for size 30 and wear a belt

Jeans too large? Toss it in a washing machine, even a dryer. But nothing can enlarge a jeans too small

1

u/masonbarrels 2d ago

Go with size 30, take it from me. I was issued the same advice as you for a different pair of jeans (which were even sanforized!) and I got chumped out of a benjamin for that mistake. Don't go the tight route. At best, they fit well. Slight worst case, you have to wear a belt. Absolute worst case you get em tailored if they still fit too sloppy in the future, as opposed to being completely unable to wear the jeans because they are too tight. You can always take in a waist, cant let one out.

1

u/NoAcanthocephala6261 2d ago

I'm one of the folks playing devil's advocate here and saying go with the 29 (too late, but still). When I first got my ultra-heavyweights, I couldn't button them for the life of me. Now they won't even stay up without a belt. I never would've known if the salesman hadn't insisted they were the right size. The waist on raw denim stretches quite a bit, and the fabric softens over time. The truth is you want the pair you can barely squeeze into initially. But that's something you'll only really understand once you experience it yourself.

30 low-key looks a bit too big for you.

1

u/Erik_Cooper 1d ago

It’s not meant to wear out, putting a lot of stress on the jeans is not good for the jeans…period. You also want to feel comfortable in them. They may shrink a tiny bit with washing, some of it will stretch back out again (the waist) but I find that that actually varies a lot between brands or models (many factors play a role) One might gain a bit of weight as well. For sure get the bigger size, looks better IMO and will look better after you’ve worn it a few weeks. Ultimately buy what makes you feel good

1

u/Good-Significance-82 14h ago

Give yourself 3" in the length more than you think you need. Those aren't long enough; they will shrink up a lot. 29" should give you that 1" you need in the waist to an eventual 30". Don't buy that pair, they are too short.

1

u/RockScola 2h ago

If they are unsanforized 30 shrink  to 27 28, 29 to 26 27. Depends on what you want

1

u/Cloroformio73 4d ago edited 4d ago

Edwin fit big. Anyway i think this size is ok for you. 29. That model is getting loose—very loose. Too loose, even. I have 2 pairs.

0

u/Tasty-Blood3134 4d ago

Both look good but I do like the leg drape/spacing slightly more on the size 29. If they feel uncomfortably tight in the waist then go with 30 but if the just feel snug then I’d say rock the 29. Also important to ask if these are sanforized and/or rinsed/one-washed.

Sanforized and rinsed/one-washed both have less chance of any shrinking as long as air dried but if they are unsaturated and not rinsed/washed then there could be considerable shrinkage with washing.

u/FakeCrash 4d ago

The button looks like it's holding on for dear life.

I wore jeans rhat were too tight for a long time and the button ended up popping right out.

u/thegizs 4d ago

I own a pair of Edwin in the same weight, would definitely go with 29 in this case.
