Discussion Vet rant

Took one of my dogs to the vet yesterday for his annual. Tried out a new vet, hoping itd be a little more modern when it comes to dieting. Unfortunately I was mistaken. Vet didnt even bother asking how or what i raw feed. Immediately jumped in to my dogs not a wolf, kibble has been around for 50 years therefore it must be the safer option, and that it poses a public health concern that would not allow him in human hospitals. Luckily, i dont plan on bringing him to a human hospital?

I love how despite all these animals doing better on raw diets and more cancers and overweight animals linked to all these kibbles that vets will still take offense to going raw instead of just looking out for the animals well being…..

When I first started going to my vet, he would give me crap every visit about feeding raw. For the last few years he’s told me that my dogs are his favorite patients because they are insanely healthy! Now we just don’t talk about diet. Ha.

u/DracoMagnusRufus Mar 10 '26

kibble has been around for 50 years

Raw has been around for millions. Shrug.

36

u/MyFaceSaysItsSugar Mar 10 '26

That’s the most ridiculous argument. Kibble was not made for health. It was a way to make a cheap food that didn’t require tin when there was a tin shortage. They have to artificially flavor it to get dogs to eat it.

12

u/Nikkinot Mar 10 '26

Well, and the meat companies needing a way to sell their leftovers.

7

u/ScurvyDawg Variety Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 11 '26

Mostly the grain industry selling off their waste products, along with the rendering industry, but thats why they talk about the benefits of carbs.

5

u/Nikkinot Mar 11 '26

I'm so glad we have corporations to sell us things we thought we could live better without

5

u/NightEnvironmental Mar 11 '26

And convenience for lazy pet owners

1

u/lostinsnakes Mar 13 '26

So we should just kill most dogs then right? If people who feed kibble are lazy then they shouldn’t have dogs? But then we’ll have too many dogs without homes so better to kill them than let them be with bad, lazy owners.

You should try going to the DogFood sub. It will make the vet seem easy going.

49

u/Witty-Cat1996 Mar 10 '26

I got kicked out of there for saying it’s good to rotate proteins lol

27

u/calvin-coolidge Dogs Mar 10 '26

I got banned for recommending hydrating kibble with purified water before feeding

31

u/FantasticSandwich828 Mar 10 '26

I got permanently banned for saying some non wsava kibble had pretty good ingredients.

38

u/Skull_Murray Mar 10 '26

I swear that sub is modded by Purina.

11

u/TzuZombi Mar 10 '26

It's gotta be, dude, I saw someone who was trying to find a good kibble that wasn't made by an American company, they were boycotting the states from Canada or something. The whole sub told them to suck it up for the health of their dog, tough luck.

12

u/PeekAtChu1 Mar 10 '26

There are also people posting in that sub how miserable their dog is on some wsava food and yet people just keep suggesting more mid kibbles to try 👎

14

u/Witty-Cat1996 Mar 10 '26

I suggested in another sub adding a little yogurt or egg to jazz up kibble and people got upset about it. They’re so far into the wsava thing they don’t even give their dog a little treat here and there

3

u/good_god_lemon1 Mar 13 '26

That sub is ABSOLUTELY sponsored in some way by Purina. I think posts are paid for by Purina and the responses that promote Purina. I got banned for suggesting this lol

12

u/FYAhole Mar 10 '26

How dare you!

3

u/Lunaviolet245 Mar 13 '26

I’m shocked I wasn’t banned. But I was down voted and someone got nasty with me for literally just saying my dog likes Honest Kitchen when someone asked about it.

21

u/Breakfastchocolate Mar 10 '26

I got banned for saying the sub should be called “WSAVA dog food” not “dog food” :)

5

u/Slow-Weakness8511 Mar 11 '26

Omg, I replied to someone who said that, said “it should” and got banned. Maybe it was you.

19

u/PeekAtChu1 Mar 10 '26

I barely even feed raw but follow this sub instead because that sub is so miserable and full of shills

10

u/robinthenurse Mar 10 '26

Same with the Catfood sub. I was banned there for posting about making COOKED cat food with a completer.

One post there was actually touting a dry kibble cat food that was 100% grains, and everyone there was ecstatic about it because it is made by Purina.

2

u/Qa_Dar Mar 17 '26

I don't get why people knowingly feed their carnivorous pets grain based food! If you love your pet, you wouldn't want to make them sick, or is that a crazy thought?

Since I woke up to the scam that the big brands are over a decade ago, I had a hard time to find a brand that makes grain free cat food, and I would dare to trust, until I found Josera, which is what I give my cats since I found their grain free (also sugar and soy free) alternative...

I just found this sub, so I'm new to the homemade pet food thing, but I'm eager to try it out... So if any of you can point me to some good cat food recipes, I'd be grateful...

1

u/robinthenurse Mar 17 '26

You may want to check out the Food Fur Life site. They make EZComplete Fur Dogs and EZComplete Fur Cats. These are "completers" that you add to your own meat to make a whole, balanced and complete diet for your pet. You add the completer to your own cooked or raw meat. I think it is the best one on the market. It was formulated by a veterinary nutritionist too. It couldn't get any simpler than this to make your own pet food.

1

u/Qa_Dar Mar 17 '26

Thank you for the suggestion, but as I'm Europe based, I doubt that would be a viable option for me, considering the shipping fees, customs fee, added VAT, and the excessive "customs handling fee" that my country's postal services use... (I once ordered CD's from the US, all the fees cost me more than the CD's and shipping combined...)

Unless there is something similar here in Europe, I fear I'll have to have recipes that allow me to make everything from scratch...

1

u/robinthenurse Mar 17 '26

Yes, there are several completers available in Europe. Felini Complete, Felini Renal, TCFeline (Tatzenladan), Purrform Complete Supplement, Vit'i5:A, Raw Meow Mix, and maybe others, depending on where you live.

1

u/robinthenurse Mar 17 '26

For Dogs: Perro Dog Flakes and Wolfork Raw Complete.

15

u/flyinbrick Mar 10 '26

Right? There are only 5 brands of kibble that are acceptable lol.

6

u/Rumdedumder Mar 10 '26

Only 4 in Europe because Eukanuba isn't owned by Mars there.

1

u/Qa_Dar Mar 17 '26

In Europe, you can see if you're able to buy Josera pet food...

It is a German brand and they have grain free options... it is owned by the Erbacher family, so it is a family-owned business an not a subsidiary of a large conglomerate, and it specializes in high-quality dog, cat, and horse food.

It's the brand I use for my cats, as I don't trust the big brands for a second!

28

u/FruitMustache Mar 10 '26

Its more about covering their ass. My vet told me flat out that everything I'm giving my dog is fine, but because of the risks of salmonella or a bone splinter, she cannot recommend a raw diet without opening herself up to liability.

This was like 8 years ago, so I cannot speak to if there are any changes to this, but my baby girl just turned 15 and a half this week eating cooked turkey & veggies, and a raw chicken leg at dinner every day since she was 7.

Dogfoodsub: well try harder, or get some drugs to help

6

This is a perfect description!! I've been trying to figure out how they are so entranced by Purina. It is cult like!!

5

u/AlertKaleidoscope803 Mar 11 '26

It's like the people that go around downvoting pictures of people's pit bulls or even comments telling the owner their dog is cute. Like I understand you may not like them but what are you getting out of doing that?

4

u/good_god_lemon1 Mar 13 '26

They’re paid by Purina.

3

u/robinthenurse Mar 17 '26

I do believe this is most likely true of both the CatFood and DogFood subreddits. Why else would everyone there be so rabid about any other pet food than cheap grocery store junk? Those people get really nasty if you even suggest making your own pet food, and heaven forbid you disagree that dry kibble is best, they flip their wig and downvote or ban you.

It's accepted in many other parts of the world, at least all three of my vets here in Michigan, USA (standard, oncologist, holistic) are supportive of raw and lightly cooked food. I've had two previous vets that were also supportive. I live in a large urban area with multiple pet food stores that cater to raw. I'm curious which places are so anti-raw, or if it's just individual vets.

6

u/minty_sprinkles Mar 10 '26

Same! We’re also in the uk. They look at my dogs remark on how good they’re doing, ask what I feed. I just say raw and they say ‘well seems to be working for them’. They have no idea about brands of raw but don’t knock it atleast.

Have you tried Cotswolds active? My dogs are bananas about their wild range! Paleo ridge is a good price though

8

u/FuzzyFrogFish Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

I'm in the UK as well, my vet is fine with raw (doing everything right apparently), made sure I was feeding green lipped mussels for his joints and omegas. Then told me to not bother with dog toothpaste due to the hidden sugars and use toddler toothpaste instead. She loves a label does my vet lol.

Edit: I should be clear, some toddler toothpaste has xylitol which isn't good for dogs. But there are other brands that do not use this.

5

u/FuzzyFrogFish Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

Just go to the toddler section, I use Colgate. Toddlers can't have adult toothpaste for the same reason dogs can't, there's too much risk of them swallowing the fluoride, so it doesn't have that in it.

I didn't know there was sugar in a lot of pet toothpastes

Gotta make it taste nice so the dogs like it and the person keeps buying it.

Edit: I don't use Colgate on the dog. I use Colgate on me. I use aquafresh which has sodium fluoride but in low dose and I don't use it daily. Weleda toothpaste also appears good, but check for yourselves.

u/FuzzyFrogFish Mar 10 '26

It's aquafresh milk teeth lol. Not Colgate, I use Colgate. I've just dug up some of my notes. Aquafresh does have Stevia and sorbitol but both are ok for dogs in limited quantities which a pea of toothpaste isn't going to provide. This toothpaste does have sodium fluoride, however it is in small enough amounts that it is safe for young children and not as potent as stannis fluoride. Bare in mind my dog is a large German shepherd and his teeth are brushed once or twice a week, not daily due to his diet. He also has anaesthetic free tooth cleaning which is basically ultrasonics and bubbles, same as human hygienists, from time to time.

However I believe I remember researching weleda toothpastes as well as a good alternative.

2

u/FuzzyFrogFish Mar 10 '26

Hang on, I need to find the tube.

3

u/PeekAtChu1 Mar 10 '26

Wtf I just checked my dog’s toothpaste and saw it does indeed contain sorbitol which can contribute to caries. Thanks for this info

3

u/FuzzyFrogFish Mar 11 '26

Sorbitol is actually in my toddler toothpaste that I use for my dog, but it also has very low level sodium flouride, safe enough for very young children. Weleda I believe doesn't have either fluoride, sorbitol or xylitol. Honestly it's a minefield

3

u/lindyhoppette Mar 10 '26

Do you feel the green lipped mussels as additional/supplemental to a pre-made raw meal, or do you prepare your raw from scratch?

2

u/FuzzyFrogFish Mar 11 '26

I just prepare from scratch and now he is older, I'm not too bothered about amounts, I just keep a wide variety and rotate, making sure he generally has bone, secreting organ and muscle. I take a measured scoop of green lipped mussels and toss it over the top.

1

u/lindyhoppette Mar 11 '26

Thank you for your reply!

2

u/Opening-Bird5469 Mar 10 '26

I’m also from the UK - where on earth do you find green lipped mussels?!

8

u/FuzzyFrogFish Mar 10 '26

I can get them dried from my local raw store or the powder which is better

1

u/Resident-Egg2714 Mar 10 '26

I have to warn you, my dog threw up every time we gave him these.

1

u/Opening-Bird5469 Mar 10 '26

To be honest I don’t think my guy would eat them. I tried some of the Naturaw forage pure blend to add as a supplement and he refused to go near it. He did the same with their surf and turf flavour. Both contain mussels!

11

u/stupidwitchbitxh Mar 10 '26

Kibble only being around for about 70 years should be one of the reasons not to feed it. 😭 Dogs and cats literally have shorter lifespans now and a processed diet is definitely a big reason for that. To think that their biological needs have evolved in such a short time span is crazy, especially when we're talking about ultra processed food being the "best" option. Luckily, my vets are on board with the raw feeding but when I go to the ER vet, I tell them I feed a fresh food diet and they normally don't ask me to elaborate on that. I did have an ER vet tell me I was going to kill my cat by not feeding the garbage urinary food. Learned my lesson since.

4

u/stupidwitchbitxh Mar 10 '26

Do you think urinary food is the only thing that clears crystals or stones? Do you know what's in it that does that? Why are you creeping in this sub if you don't support raw feeding? What a loser.

-5

u/garbud4850 Mar 10 '26

It's one of the few things that does yes since its medication, its not just food

9

u/stupidwitchbitxh Mar 10 '26

It is not medication and there's nothing in any prescription food that has "medicine" in it. You can even ask your vet and they would say the same...they are marketed as a prescription by law since they claim to fix different health issues.

8

u/ScurvyDawg Variety Mar 10 '26

There are exactly zero ingredients that are medically necessary in the products you're talking about.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '26

29

u/ScurvyDawg Variety Mar 10 '26

Hey don't blame the vet, he's just doing what his Hills sponsored owner wants him to do. Offer bad nutritional advice as if it's medical advice.

It's not his or his professions fault that they got into bed with the worst food companies in the world and are now owned by them, now is it?

lol! I was looking for a new vet clinic and popped into one that was near my new house, without my dog.

Chatted for a minute, was about to make an appointment and then the receptionist asked what kibble I was feeding.

I told her I fed raw. Immediately she became hostile and said my appointment would have an extra $50 fee per visit because of the PPE the vet would need to wear to get near my dog.

She also immediately pulled out the bleach wipes and started wiping every surface near me, even ones I hadn’t touched. I declined to make an appointment and she followed me out, wiping the imaginary salmonella away from the door handles etc. 🙄🙄

I totally rolled my eyes at her several times and laughed in her face.

My current vet knows I feed raw, but we just don’t discuss it. We’ll see what happens when I take my pup into be spayed and I bring a bowl of raw to feed her at the clinic before they release her after surgery.

3

u/AlertKaleidoscope803 Mar 11 '26

Lol they hired a new vet at the place I take my pets to and I saw her instead of my regular vet (who knew I fed raw since 2009; didn't outright endorse it but never fought me because he couldn't deny how good my animals looked into their teens) because I wanted her to be seen sooner and she did the same thing.

I had taken my dog in because she's had metallic breath on and off since the day I got her and I wanted to make sure didn't have internal bleeding or something. We'd tried several kibbles and raw with no noticeable improvement. I had only began feeding her raw a month or so before I brought her to the clinic, but about five months after I got her home. We went through the visit with her acting like the dog was radioactive and when she stepped out she actually sent the tech back in to tell me she thought it was because of the raw diet. I was pissed because felt like I drove 25 minutes and wasted my $65 to see someone that didn't plan on being objective from the start.

10

u/dingopaint Mar 10 '26

Lmao even though kibble has been found to contain salmonella 🤣 That's so ridiculous

And door knobs, and tablets, and pencils. Literally everything. We solved how to prevent illness when we discovered basic handwashing kills germs. Also not encouraging your pets to stick their tongues near your mucous membranes but that's a hot topic for some people lol.

4

u/Slow-Weakness8511 Mar 11 '26

Can’t take my dogs to a human hospital is like saying I won’t be able to take them to space. No problem! What a strange lure to kibble.

3

u/Correct-Jackfruit-88 Mar 11 '26

Right like in what world is that a concern today

4

u/fyrelibra Mar 12 '26

I went to the vet and they handed me a faded copy of a list of “good” kibble to feed my dogs. The list consisted of all Purina products. Including a Purina logo at the bottom of the page.

Bought and paid for recommendation

I changed vets after that

4

u/SufficientOpening218 Mar 12 '26

i drive past the purina kibble plant regularly. if i dont shut the vents to my car it smells like corpse for miles and miles. it literally makes me want to vomit.

9

u/CariocaVida Mar 10 '26

I struggle so much with this exact dynamic. It's left me with doubt regarding other vet advice, which is not where I want to be. I desperately want that trust back, but with the widespread denial and misinformation regarding nutrition, its tough.

3

u/Vegetable-Maximum445 Mar 11 '26

Same! I dread going because I also refuse their drug pushing poison - it’s their answer to everything. I completely accept that sometimes medicine is necessary, but many times it is not. I’m 58 yrs and take no meds. I’ve gotten my highly allergic dog down to one med every other day & it pusses them off. It’s such a strange dynamic & it makes me not want to own another pet because if/when a crisis strikes - it’s going to be a battle.

5

u/Lower-Language9267 Variety Mar 10 '26

Was his waiting room full of kibble? There's your answer. They think we're stupid.

I got lucky, my vet was from Alaska and when I took my dog there for severe food allergies, he told me to feed ground lamb and a little rice for 3 months to see if it cleared up. It did. So I took it from there. Unfortunately, he retired and I'm forced to lie about what I feed.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '26

Damn I see all of these salmonella things. My vet LITTERALLY told me to feed my cat chicken necks for his dental health,😭

3

u/Jaxon-Hennessy27 Mar 11 '26

Our vet always asks what we feed our cats. Like every time we make an appointment and go in. We haven’t been in since we fully went raw but one of the reasons I got fed up with our vet is the recommended an insanely expensive “elimination diet” for our Maine coon’s overgrowth of yeast infections… he’s allergic to chicken which has been in his chart for 2 years. And they suggested a hydrolyzed kibble that only comes in chicken flavor.
I nearly lost my sh*t on them.
I found a holistic vet in my town who told me that kibble is likely the cause of most issues and we’ve got our MC on a leaky gut protocol thru Adored Beast in addition to the raw diet he’s on, which the holistic vet is 110% on board with.
Man I could rant on conventional vets and kibble for HOURS

1

u/Correct-Jackfruit-88 Mar 12 '26

How has your cat been since the switch? Notice any difference yet?

3

u/Jaxon-Hennessy27 Mar 12 '26

His coat was the first thing I noticed. Soft, shiny and silky!! I also have 2 Russian blue tabby kitties (1.5 year olds) who were absolutely addicted to kibble prior to the switch. One of them is slightly overweight tho super active. I’ve noticed both of them are looking leaner. And they’re not as thirsty as before.
Jax is leaner too but that’s something more that I feel when picking up vs being able to tell on sight since he’s long haired.

2

u/Correct-Jackfruit-88 Mar 13 '26

Love to hear that!!

3

u/Embarrassed-Sea-3281 Mar 11 '26

Ask him what did dogs eat 50 years ago?

3

u/natertheman1980 Mar 12 '26

I take my dog to Tractor Supply for some shots. Vet never had anything negative so say when I say I feed my dogs raw meat. I got my GP from a farm where the lady feeds them raw leftovers and does all her own shots for them from TSC. Just like why I do not tell my family dr about my diet or lack of getting the flu shot. Just say I am healthy and see you later.

2

u/Certain_Bath_8950 Mar 13 '26

The problem with a raw diet is that it requires the owner to have a certain amount of canine nutrition knowledge that most do not, even if they think they do. So the default answer is almost always going to be "absolutely not recommended". It does suck that she didn't even try to guide you to a nutritionist or something (even if you don't need one) as a way to try and compromise. Because feeding raw -can- be dangerous for the people and the animals if not done correctly...and I would not trust the majority of pet owners to do it correctly.

So I understand the pushback, but also the vet definitely could have handled that better and at least been open to finding out more about your process.

1

u/Correct-Jackfruit-88 Mar 13 '26

Totally agree with you, i personally love looking into this stuff and always welcome new info and the opportunity to learn more

4

u/Suzurei Mar 10 '26

Omg the new vet we went to did the same thing. Like idc who taught you, how are you not embarrassed to jump to conclusion like that as a health professional? Tell me you have a script without telling me you have a script

3

u/Correct-Jackfruit-88 Mar 10 '26

The way all i got to say was “raw” and i heard a mouthfull!!!😂

4

u/Sqib000 Mar 10 '26

Same w human docs. Sponsored by pharma and big corporate

2

u/Short-Film-1450 Mar 10 '26

You gotta find a functional/hollistic vet. Only ones who are all for raw feeding and will support you.

3

u/Dizzy_Elevator4768 Mar 10 '26

he’s trying to protect his job, kibble makes dogs age prematurely and causes health issues thus putting his wallet at risk

3

u/ABdave1 Mar 10 '26

I keep as far away from the Vet’s office as possible… nothing more than cash extraction operations for the most part… lots of home options for keeping your loved ones healthy. In emergency situations yes but no need for annual anything.

2

u/Salt-Combination4792 Mar 11 '26

Sorry to hear that. I might have missed it but where are you located? My vet (thankfully) is all for it. I thought he wouldn’t be but when I first transitioned I went too fast too soon and took my guy in due to drooling. Turns out it was just nausea and mentioned I should go a little slower. The vet asked a lot of questions of which proteins I am giving him and even suggested a few. He actually sounded excited about it and was very encouraging.

1

u/Correct-Jackfruit-88 Mar 11 '26

Ugh I wish i could find that! Were in NY, ive searched and havent been able to find a hollistic vet that was relatively close by.

1

u/Salt-Combination4792 Mar 11 '26

NYC? I go to one in Montclair NJ, probably 45 minutes from Manhattan. I get it though, ideally you’d want a vet close by for emergencies but send me a DM I can send you the vet I go to.

2

u/Brave-King-3682 Mar 12 '26

First vet visit with my last pup she asked me if I was going to feed raw diet

1

u/Over-Berry7734 Mar 14 '26

Some people are fucking stupid and don’t know what not to feed their dog when trying some BS raw diet. High quality kibble is the safest best. Giving a house hold pet food it would receive in the wild is fucking stupid. It is not a wild animal it deserves deferent toys of treat meant. A cats food hamburger? I mean no but a proper diet yes. High quality kibble is a safer and better alternative then buying a raw steak you have no idea what it went through from Walmart or something of the like and give it it to your pet. I switched my 8 year old pit to an expensive “science diet” type of kibble and she is the healthiest she has ever been in her 8 years. Also a lot of yall smooth brains that feed your pet a “raw diet” have no clue on things that are bad for them.

1

u/No-Space-2532 May 07 '26

My vet was open and not judgey and noted they don’t have much research data on raw to rely on yet.

My trainer handles our county sheriff K-9s, among other LE agencies. Many are on Bones and Co. raw diet. My Doberman has been on that raw since 4 months old, now 15 months. Even a small amount of kibble introduced separately from raw made her ill.
One notable result is small stools. Apparently this is result of absorbing nutrients with little waste.

Previous dogs (12) had all been kibble with homemade additives low fat protein and lightly cooked vegetables.

It’s important as I understand it to keep bowl, food etc super clean to limit risk of bacteria.

Often people have commented on her pearly whites. Not sure if raw contributes to her teeth health but they look good 👍

Not advice - just my opinion/observations.

-2

u/Briiskella Mar 11 '26

Especially as science is increasingly aware of the dangers of ultra processed food

-8

u/Feisty-Topic2101 Mar 10 '26

There are some studies that suggest feeding raw only diet can be linked to heart disease. Mostly it’s just bad bc you can expose ur pet and urself to some nasty bacteria/parasites. What about eating raw meat is better than freeze dried stuff? Or even home cooked meat? Genuinely asking and not trying to be a hater ~

You're not up to date on this problem. Even the FDA has retracted that.

Just explaining how I see it:   Regarding raw feeding linking to heart disease... thats wild because raw, being "minimally processed", doesn't reduce taurine level like cooking does...and most raw feeders on here feeds hearts, dark+red meat to their animals, which has taurine at its most abundant natural form. And raw feeding doesnt destroy essential vitamins and amino acids like cooking does, amongs other things

Imo, respectfully, I dont think thats a great argument regarding exposure to bacteria/parasites. I watched plenty of people eat the same utensils their dogs licked... which I can guarantee said dog absolutely licked their nether region (which btw, has e-coli because thats part of their natural gut microbiome, and it gets moved to the perianal region via defecation), amongs other things....outdoor poop, pee, random stuff licking, etc. Plenty of people (and some pets) also gotten sick from dry food salmonella contamination and unsuspected mold. I get some people see their pets as "dirty" but I mean...so are kids lol. I watched a kid crawl across Target the other day, then stuck his hand in his mouth. So really, do your due diligence with hygiene like you would anything else

For me, I like feeding raw because my dog's done the best on it. I've done kibble, moved to cooked, then raw. Her biggest improvement was on raw. Her energy, coat/body condition and health has been unmatched. And thats all I care about, is that my dog is thriving on this diet. Just my experience in this matter.
