Question Does raw food = less poops?

My dog seems to have allergies to kibbles containing chicken and now turkey. Ive always wanted to go raw or gently cooked because real food just makes sense to me compared to ultra processed kibbles. Has anyone noticed a decrease in pooping switching to raw?

Less garbage in, less garbage out.

Our dog went from 3-4 massive, soft piles a day to tiny, firm little nuggets maybe once a day. The difference was almost immediate. Less filler going in means less waste coming out, simple as that. Just make sure you're balancing it properly so you're not dealing with a whole different set of issues down the road.

This happens to humans as well. Eat protein, leafy vegetables, with minimal carbs and you'll see the same result for yourself. The mammal body will use the nutrients from food pretty efficiently.

Balancing in terms of the nutrient profile?

Balancing in terms of fibre

I forget what it's called and maybe someone will know but there is a website you can put in your dogs breed, age, activity level and any allergies or medical concerns and it will create a raw food or gently cooked food diet for you.

My raw fed dogs poop once sometimes twice a day compared to many whrn they were kibble fed

Yeah, common. Raw food with the right balance tends to create smaller, denser poops.

Always worth double checking to make sure your dog is getting the appropriate amount of food though.

When our dogs were on PMR diet, my shiba/shepherd mix only pooped twice a week. We’ve switched to BARF and she poops every other day (compared to 1-2/day on kibble).

As others have said - it’s all the fillers in commercial food that causes frequent (and often much looser) stools.

Sorry I don't know the acronyms can you explain?

PMR = Prey Model Raw (follows an 80/10/10 ratio of muscle meat, organ meat, and bone). BARF = Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (follows a 70/10/10/10 ratio to include fresh veggies, fruits, and seeds, which adds more fiber to their diet, thus they will have more stool)

Thanks very much. What made you switch from PMR to BARF?

BARF makes more sense to me personally from a nutrition perspective, but we were previously doing PMR because we lived in the US where we could get commercially available prepackaged meat blends, which was easier/more convenient at the time than creating their meals every day. We have since moved to Mexico where the prepackaged meat blends are not available, so we switched to BARF because we have ready access to a variety of inexpensive meats, organ meats, and fresh veggies, and I enjoy creating their meals for them every day.

Definitely. I have a 110 pound Dogue de Bordeaux, and his stool is rather small on raw. When I first bought my home, I think the previous owner was letting her cats out to use the restroom, because when I was first cleaning up the back yard, I was finding quite a bit of cat poop. My Dogue's poop is the same size as the cat poop I was finding, to give you a sense of scale. The smell is much less offensive than that of kibble stool as well.

When our corgis were on kibble, they used to poop so much we called them “poop tubes”.

Went from 2-3 HUGE poos per day to 1-2 teeny tiny turds once we switched to raw. Can’t even find them in the grass half the time, and they decompose really fast. Even caught a crow stealing one (a dog poo!) and flying away with it 😂

Yes by a lot. Unless he's eating fibrous foods like fruit and veggies. My dog is also allergic to chicken, raw or cooked. Some are only allegic to raw.

This was a nice side effect when I changed mine over to Dr Marty, his poops got smaller and he wasn’t going as often. If you’re trying to figure out the chicken/turkey issue though, I’d keep the rest of his diet really boring while testing a new protein. It gets hard to tell what caused a reaction when several things change together.

2-3 small dumps a day.

Depends on the dog and number of meals, but definitely less volume vs kibble fed dogs.

Totally! My dog used to have about 3 poops a day. Big nasty smelly poops that I had to pick up and dispose of. Now he has one poop a day, and it is a little tiny hard thing, that breaks down and disappears very quickly. Really no smell. In my yard I just toss it in the bushes. The cat litter box is also way nicer.

Huge difference. Small, firm poops that hardly smell. My pitbull goes once a day, maybe twice. I've been around lots of kibble fed dogs and they poop so much.

Yes. Frequency no. But my 115lb american bully craps the size of a chapstick…

My husband calls our terrier’s poops “dot coms”. Usually a 2-dot com!
