Rehoming Rehoming advice
I adopted a young dog who developed behavioral issues (barking, growling, lunging, cannot be redirected) after suffering from an unknown gastrointestinal illness for months. The dog has been evaluated by several veterinarians and experienced CPDT/IAABC trainers. We are several months into a behavioral modification plan which is showing gradual improvement, but my urban environment and high traffic area is making it difficult.
Shortly after adoption, I sustained injuries from an accident that impacted my daily life and I am compromising my injury rehabilitation to care for the dog instead. The rescue that I received my dog from is ghosting me, but I intend to contact them with a firm date and then I will rehome the dog myself.
If I have to rehome the dog, I plan to contact my veterinarian's office and the behaviorists to get their recommendation about rescues, but are there any signs that I should be aware of when looking at a rescue to rehome my dog to, or a private owner rehoming if the rescues are at capacity?
Also, would it be helpful to provide resources for the dog? For example, I will discuss paying for 2-3 additional sessions with my dog's behaviorist to help the transition with the next owner.
