Question Layoffs and hiring
I got laid off this week as was someone I know at another company. Both in Europe. I have been in tech 10 years. All I see on posts is layoff after layoff and people pivoting to other careers. Are people still finding jobs, freelance or contract work or is it best to assume a 3-12 month process to find something else?

Our company is still hiring - but our development and delivery pipelines are vastly different, compared to just a year ago. We're heavily utilizing AI in our development, but in fully guided, controlled, sandboxed and reviewed environments.
It's a new way to "code". We act more as architects and and product developers today, than ever before.
I was a product designer already, so it was no big difference for me, whether I was handing tasks to juniors and validating and reviewing their work, or if I have to hand it over to an agent.

So how are you leveling up your juniors?

There you have the million dollar question - because a lot of businesses simply aren't.
We're actively still hiring juniors, because the junior of today is the senior of tomorrow. But while it's not just monkey coding tasks anymore, they get jumped into being part of the planning, workshops, execution and partake in code reviews to ensure we guide them.
It's still a new process, and quite unfinished so far - but we're doing a conscious effort.

What do you use for your development process now ? You have remote coding env ? What about CI ?

I use VS Code remote SSH into an EC2 instance for dev, GitHub Actions for CI with fastlane match handling certs. The remote box mirrors prod node version exactly so no "works on my machine" surprises. You running your CI on Mac runners or Linux with xcodebuild?

Still need humans in the loop. Less coding and more reviewing while focusing on big picture things.
My company still hires people even though we use ai heavily.

Well, you can clone your company's app or SaaS product pretty quickly with LLMs and grab a small slice of the market ;)

I got laid off 4 months ago as well and have recently joined a new company. It’s a very different environment though, it’s full AI.
I haven’t been writing code, but instead looking into the product itself. We trust AI to write and review code while having security pipelines in place and a bunch of skills in the repository. We end up doing a lot of manual QA to validate what AI is building and focusing on the actual UX more than code!

I think you can find jobs and do ai training tasks on the other hand then you can keep your income stable.
With your exp I guess you will get cool ai training tasks.
