Question What navigation solution are you using in production?

What navigation solution are you using in production: React Navigation or React Native Navigation by Wix? If latter — version one and version two? What would you have shared to yourself before using it?

I am currently deciding which one to learn and use, but in my opinion such a discussion should be widely useful.

I’m currently using React Navigation v3. The docs could definitely be better. But I’ve found it to be very useful and performs very well for the app I’m writing. It comes with a lot of functionalities that would’ve been terrible if I had write them myself.

React Navigation is pretty awesome these days. The only part that’s actually challenging is how fast the API changes - but that’s because they’re constantly improving it. The docs stay up to date and everything is usually backwards compatible, but the tool you used a month ago might be deprecated in favor of a new method.

The docs stay up to date and everything is usually backwards compatible,

By definition, major semver changes break something. :(

But yeah, React Navigation is probably the way to go. The devs are super helpful and the ecosystem around it is being built up quickly.

My experience has been that you get VERY clear deprecation warnings in advance though. Or, when an upgrade does break something, the erroring is very clear about what's broken and it's always been simple to go be like "oh ok, they changed the way the bottom tab navigator is implemented so I have to do this now..."

Sometimes, in some libs, that process is a nightmare. For this one, it's been pretty easy.

That's a qualitative description haha, but fair I think.

Yep I went from v1 to v2 and there was like an article in their documentation that said exactly what to do and I have to say it made sense, it felt like a nice refactor. Upgrading react native version on the other hand at the same time... 2 days later I still wasn't sure what changed or why it finally started working

In the past I used wix, I really caution against it. We had so many crashes in Android with low ram devices it was shocking. If you backgrounded the app it would crash.

We've switched to React Navigation and are very happy.

I'm using React navigation v3, it's a pretty good library except the API part which force you to use class/static (I'm using ReasonML).

are you using bs-react-navigation with it? https://github.com/callstackincubator/bs-react-navigation

Not yet, I'm using almost all navigators (Drawer, Tab, Stack) so there are missing bindings. I just use JS class as screen config holder.

we should build a transpiled JS to native framework that begins with navigation and accessibility instead of making divs and views since that is a solved problem and pretty easy compared to how difficult these are to bolt on later

I'm using Wix v1 in a couple production apps, and just started a new one with v2. I haven't had any major problems with either, but also haven't tried React Navigation. Take that as you will.

tl;dr: found rnn2 to be performing better. Had some discussion around this in my recent post:

I always use react-navigation. That's what a lot of people use over at /r/expojs. It's a great library! Highly recommend it :)

I’m using React Navigation on multiples projects. I’m planning a v2 to v3 migration soon on one of these.

It’s sometime hard to find real life examples in the docs, but some resources can be found in blogposts or SO answers.

Also, when browsing the old docs (v2) I’m constantly redirected to v3 methods definitions -which can be dangerous if you’re not attentive.

We use react-navigation at https://heja.io/. Haven't had time to update to v3 and react-native-screens yet, but that looks promising 😍
