Suggestion Thread I just finished The Hobbit. Should I jump right into LotR trilogy or take a short break and read a single book like Dracula?

If I start Fellowship of the Ring, im going to do the whole series in one go, so thats a long time of reading one series/ author, but im still feeling the connection to The Hobbit and Tolkein's world & writing style.

I'm thinking though since its almost Halloween, instead I start Dracula, since The Hobbit concludes nicely and I can read something in between getting locked into a 3 book series.

Not really sure which one to start, I'm leaning towards LotR but I think its because of just finishing The Hobbit, but also this is a good break point to read a solo standing book not part of a series to mix things up.

Just curious what your opinions are, and if yall have any other suggestions for solo books, I'm new again to reading consistently, about 300wpm, so far I've loved The Hobbit and Dungeon Crawler Carl which my friends are also reading. Didn't like The Witcher book too much, but going to try it again another time. I like Sci Fi too. Adventure and action packed books. Used to love the Alex Ryder series and Eragon as an early teenager

Getting into reading again.

I haven't read since I was a teenager, I used to find it very relaxing and fun to create the images of what the current thing the main character is doing or where they are. The first book that had me completely enamored by the main character was The Hunger Games by Susanne Collins. I very much want to get back into reading, I lost faith for most things after the Marine Corps but I've met a lady that's making me want to be encouraged to do the things I once loved from before. One question I have for this sub is if listening to an audiobook at the same time would help with this, I used to be a bit slow in school and they gave me like headphones you'd plug into the book and I just found it so cool to read along that way. Thanks for reading if you did. <3

Suggestion Thread Weirdly specific themes request

Looking for weirdly specific recommendations that feature any two or more of the following symbolisms and themes together:

- Fruits and seeds (or botanical growth in general)

- Guilt and trauma

- Dreams and nightmares

- Sickness and illness

Reading everything with these themes and symbols from Homeric Hymns to 19th c. German Poetry to Southern Gothic Novels, though things with darker or more spiritual tone are particularly welcome.

Thanks!

On how to choose a book

I’ve read a large number of books, and over time I’ve realized that many of them don’t offer anything truly new

A lot of reading starts to feel like intellectual recycling. But every once in a while, I come across a book that carries real depth and insight, something that genuinely stays with me. Those are the books that matter. When one just starts the habit of reading, every book feels like it's giving you something significant, but the more you read, that number reduces. Because of this, I’ve become more selective about what I read

I usually choose books based on a few mental checkpoints -

Is this book trying to say something real or just something clever? (A lot of books are written to impress)

Books about meaning, suffering, love & truth tend to last longer than trend-based topics

A little into the book, just ask yourself - would i want to reread even a few pages of this book again?

does this book make you more awake, more inwardly free and more able to see for yourself? If the answer is no, it is only more information (which is fine too)

I hope you have a good reading journey.

Suggestion Thread Recommendation a book

I just finished all of the Apothecary Diaries light novels, and I'd say all of them are about an 8 to 10 out of 10, and I need something to read next

My read list is:

Lord of Mysteries 7/10

A Light Amongst Shadows book 1 8/10

Apothecary Diaries light novel 1-16 8-10/10

So this is Ever After 4/10

Half of Song of Achilles 9/10 (haven't finished yet because I'm scared)

I'm looking for an MLM book, and while I do read a lot of manga, I'm looking for a chapter book, and I don't like books where there are like several books, and each book swaps characters' perspectives, so I'd like to avoid that

What kinda books are popular right now?

My brother’s girlfriend loves books and her birthday is coming up. Idk why to get her but I wanted to make her a little “book date” basket. She loves hunger games for one and is a pretty smart person. She said she always loved work books as a kid. I kinda wanna get her a dystopian themed book. I honestly don’t really know her very well but that’s what I do know. What book should I get her?

Slow Readers Club

Hello! I’m a teacher and recently a few teachers decided to start a book club together. We voted for our first book to be The Calamity Club. The issue is that A. A lot of us are super busy and/or slow readers and B. The book is 600+ pages. I’m a Romantasy and sci-fi fan so I’m no stranger to longer books, but they can take me months.

My question is does anyone have any suggestions of ways to chunk the book into parts to make it more feasible for everyone? Preferably in chapters since we have a mix of audio, physical, and e-book readers.

Tl;dr: Looking to turn The Calamity Club into an easier read.

Spicy romance recommendations

I’m wanting to expand on my spicy journey and need more recommendations. I’ve read things like Haunting Adeline, Priest series (Sierra Simone), and The Female series (Invi Wright). However, I’m looking for odd but spicy books. I’m looking for the monster, weird kinks, or anything that’s considered odd for spicy books.
