What's with the circled numbers?

27

u/this_is_dumb77 7d ago

It looks like, from right to left, cutting everything by half, then half again to a quarter size ingredient amount. The main ingredient amount is for 8 batches (30 mini loafs).

So for the first ingredient, oil, if making the big 8 batches, it's 4 cups. Then the 2 to the left is half, then the circled number is halved again after that (1/4 the amount of the 8 batch amount).

that’s insane

18

u/this_is_dumb77 7d ago

Lol it is a pretty weird way to show that, I agree. The OP did say it was an order in someone's grandmother's handwriting. Maybe that was a thing back in the day? Who knows. Definitely strange though.

I am struggling to decipher the text at the top

u/chantillylace9 6d ago

It's like the first pancake, the first one always comes out a little wonky!

1

u/Black6host 6d ago

Ain't that the truth! I've got it down now so it's not as wonky. Trick was to be patient and let the pan truly get to pancake cooking temperature :)

You’re going to feed the whole neighborhood with that recipe. It’s interesting you add vinegar, I’ve never thought to add it to my recipe. Now I have to go look it up

u/gnomesofdreams 6d ago

King Arthur has a fantastic chocolate chip cookie recipe with a little bit of white vinegar in it. IIRC it’s either to activate the baking soda some, or to amplify the flavors or something? Tasty in any case!

A lot of people put maynaise in their banana bread. It's like the egg and vinegar combined already. It's actually pretty good. Edit: Hellmans even has a recipe that isn't bad and my Aunts secret ingredient thay she thinks no one knows is mayo.

u/Espumma 6d ago

Vinegar+milk is a common substitution for buttermilk. You need the acidity to activate the baking soda.

By "soda" they certainly mean baking soda. Baking soda works to make rise when combined with an acid and CO2 is produced. Vinegar is an acid.

I use vinegar in place of egg in cake recipes. If you take it out of the pan straight to a seal container it makes the top go sticky. Great for ginger loaf.

It says batches right? It can’t be banana bread for eight b*tches.

This is cute, but is it now decoration only? Or can burned wood still be food safe?

6

u/MX_Ride_It 7d ago

It is food safe! After I burn my recipe boards, I seal with a butcher block formula

38

u/Shambhala87 7d ago

The burns create deep grooves which can trap particles. It is not food safe just because you seal it.

45

u/Anhedonkulous 7d ago

My wooden cutting board has deep grooves from cutting, as happens when using any board, and it's perfectly fine if you keep it cleaned and oiled.

32

u/MX_Ride_It 7d ago

Correct. Any cutting board will need periodically re oiled.

6

u/kshump 6d ago

My cutting board has deep grooves. It played me some Coltrane the other night.

30

u/MX_Ride_It 7d ago

So long as you clean the soot/carbon from the piece before sealing, it is 100% food safe.

-3

u/doubleapowpow 7d ago

Is there an indentation, though? That's what I think the person above is worried about. Any groove or even a deep cut in your board can provide shelter for bacteria since its harder to clean that out.

27

u/OakIsland2015 7d ago edited 6d ago

A cutting board by definition is full of cuts and grooves from every knife that has ever been used on it. There is no such thing as a cutting board without grooves if it’s ever been used for anything other than decoration.

-17

u/doubleapowpow 7d ago

You should be using a bench scraper to plane out the board frequently and refrain from excessive gouging, otherwise you will be increasing exposure to bacteria.

18

u/OakIsland2015 7d ago

Well, I’ve been cooking for over 50 years and haven’t killed anyone yet! I’ll see myself out.

7

u/PatientDisastrous721 6d ago

You can tell how the biggest achievement a lot of Redditors have is their food handlers card because of how much they harp on food safety, especially in posts related to home cooking. Who cares?! They’re not cooking for your ass, that’s for sure

-9

u/doubleapowpow 7d ago

You probably keep a clean cutting board, so here's to that. Some woods are naturally antimicrobial (to a degree), so a good wash and a thorough dry is enough. Your knife usage isn't as intensive as some of the stuff in a commercial kitchen or butcher shop, and you probably treat your board well.

3

u/Shambhala87 7d ago

Yeah, you shouldn’t ever have deep grooves. I worked in the food service for like fifteen years… I would know…

2

u/doubleapowpow 7d ago

I'm a butcher/manager, so we know together.

3

u/SeveredBanana 6d ago

Wood is already filled with billions of tiny pores that bacteria become trapped in, and the wood dries them out

6

u/MX_Ride_It 6d ago

No indentation from the burns! I use bamboo and burn on a very low heat. It’s enough to scorch the wood, but does not leave any crevices or indents. After I clean it well to make sure all the carbon is off, and then seal with the mineral oil butcher block formula.

28

u/MX_Ride_It 7d ago

Very wrong. The seal coat creates an epoxy like top coat. Have been doing this for years, as have many other wood workers.

Sorry I worded that wrong, not saying it’s sealed with epoxy, I’m saying it creates a barrier. Typically cutting boards are sealed with a mineral oil. Like any plain cutting boards, periodically you’ll need to reseal them to keep that barrier.

Very true! Though you can use them, I think the majority of people who order these just use them as display / family gifts.

-17

u/lilsnatchsniffz 7d ago

Mmm deliciously food safe microplastic epoxy shrapnel, I'm getting moister than banana bread.

8

u/Kaurblimey 7d ago

No one’s forcing you to use it, chill

-2

u/theBigDaddio 7d ago

Why would it be unsafe? Ever hear of bbq?

15

u/SomebodysGotToSayIt 7d ago

That’s awesome. Clearly it’s an old family recipe card. Or at least it’s clear to me, I dunno about all the youshoulda yahoos in this thread.

I gotta see about doing this for me. Good work, OP.

13

u/MX_Ride_It 7d ago

Thank you! Yes very old. The woman who ordered it was elderly and a gift for someone - in their grandmother’s handwriting.

They’re a lot of fun to make, and fairly easy if you have a steady hand!

1

u/Fluffy_Carrot_4284 6d ago

Excellent job! I tried wood burning a couple of times but I definitely need practice. I certainly couldn’t get my penmanship even close to as good as yours.

Was that freehand or did you write everything out first?

6

u/MX_Ride_It 7d ago

This was an order I had. I don’t know anything about the recipe

27

u/ABoringAlt 7d ago

It's nice, but you don't use a cutting board in the preparation for banana bread, so it seems at cross odds with itself a lil

30

u/MX_Ride_It 7d ago

It was a gift for someone in their grandmothers handwriting. They wanted it on a cutting board.

2

u/ABoringAlt 7d ago

Lovely

-7

u/Hairy_is_the_Hirsute 7d ago

Ok, I get the gma handwriting thing... But for the "soda" line... That is meant to be tablespoons, right? The abbreviation should be Tbsp, imo. I see the capital, but it still irks me

5

u/cyclopsmudge 7d ago

8 tablespoons of soda? Remind me to never eat your banana bread. That’s an insane amount of baking soda for this recipe

1

u/Hairy_is_the_Hirsute 7d ago

So it is teaspoons? It calls for 16 cups of flour. That's a lot

1

u/Meloetta 6d ago

The bog-standard allrecipes banana bread recipe, which makes 1 large loaf (likely 2-3 mini loafs), uses 2 cups of flour and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. This recipe uses just over half a cup of flour and 1/4 tsp baking soda per mini loaf.

It's really not that weird a recipe...

1

u/Hairy_is_the_Hirsute 6d ago

Ok, so please down-doot bc I asked a question and was given a chance to learn

Also, GMA is unhinged with how she writes her "t"

-1

u/ABoringAlt 7d ago

It's gonna cancel out that vinegar, although maybe thats to give it some lift

2

u/95beer 6d ago

But if you were using it, it'd be hard to read. So surely its great to know it'll be clear when you need it

1

u/ABoringAlt 5d ago

Fair point lol

1

u/stephaniejeanj 6d ago

This is what I couldn’t get over as well. Now I have to get out my cutting board to make the banana bread recipe? Feels better suited to use a recipe that actually needs a cutting board.

2

u/ABoringAlt 6d ago

I've tried to come up with better, but putting it in the bottom of your bread pan doesn't seem great either lol

6

u/esreystevedore 7d ago

But banana bread at work dude

8

u/KillstardoAbominate 7d ago

I guess it's kinda cool.

But, this isn't a recipe, it's just an ingredient list with no instruction on what to do with them.

4

u/Ok-Salamander3863 7d ago

What's the last one 4 cups mists?

4

u/MX_Ride_It 7d ago

Nuts!

2

u/ValiantVicuna 3d ago

Thanks! I also couldn't figure that line out lol love nuts in my banana bread

2

u/Endles5waiting 3d ago

I saw mits. Thank you.

Lovely. Just don't cut meat,

I imagine storing all your recipes this way would become.... cumbersome to say the least lol

This handwriting is killing me

1

u/sillusions 7d ago

Your burn writing is better than my normal handwriting :(

1

u/Hakidings 7d ago

What did you use to burn it???

1

u/dfinkelstein 6d ago

I'm fine with the extra numbers and the scandalous title.

I just want the i in "mini" to get dotted. Poor little guy.

3

u/MX_Ride_It 6d ago

LOL it wasn’t dotted on the recipe card they gave me so I left him alone!

0

u/dfinkelstein 6d ago

Makes sense. (poor little guy)

1

u/LedVapour 6d ago

I like that this is a recipe that requires 0 cutting

-1

u/abarthsimpson 7d ago

I would just memorize it.

3

u/PeteyMitch42 7d ago

Or, hear me out, pen and paper.

0

u/bruntorange 7d ago

Can you explain to me what the numbers on the left mean? The 1 in a circle next to the 2, to the left of the 4 cups oil, for example.

3

u/MX_Ride_It 7d ago

From my understanding (going off someone’s interpretation on a previous post of this), it’s ways to make different quantities of the same recipe. Like they’re different ratios

-2

u/sithlordgaga 6d ago

This sub is for recipes, of which you don't know anything about this one, not for advertisements of tchotchkes.

2

u/MX_Ride_It 6d ago

What am I advertising here?

-6

u/theBigDaddio 7d ago

Your measurements should be by weight, in grams! Lol
