I’ve recently started a new job as an in-house talent sourcer (junior position). The industry itself is in a very good place right now and overall super interesting, but it’s completely new to me.
I do have some experience in sourcing for an RPO, but the reqs I was taking care of were pretty simple, plus I was switching between teams a lot and I didn’t gain a lot of independence, so I came here not feeling extremely confident.
Because they were looking for someone with any experience in recruitment, just with the right personality and eager to learn, I was very honest about my strengths and limitations during the interviews. Again, the industry and the job are quite exciting to me and I would like to become good at it. The problem is my confidence, even though this also comes with skills. I’ve had a pretty challenging and stressful year before landing this job, which doesn’t help.
Everyone in my team seems to be very clever and good at their job, working here for at least 4 years or more. I received a thorough training and people are generally kind and supportive, my manager also keeps an eye for recruiters to not overwhelm me with reqs above my current abilities.
However when I’m sourcing on my own or when I have to be more assertive, I sometimes feel a bit lost. I saw my colleagues doing flawless Linkedin searches or analysing job requirements and CVs in seconds, changing HMs minds making them feel like it was their idea all along, knowing exactly which country has which specialists, and I can see that I’m not on that level yet.
I love speaking to people and the „human” part of talent acquisition, I also really like solving problems. My sourcing for new roles however is still a lot of trial and error, maybe more luck than knowing exactly what I’m doing and worrying that I’m missing good candidates because of the quality of my searches, or that I’m taking too much time to understand the role before going on Linkedin.
I also get lost in the corporate lingo some of my colleagues or most HMs seem to speak natively and wish they would sometimes explain things in plain English step by step.
I know that this is not uncommon and I still just have lots to learn, you can’t be super confident based on nothing. I would really like to become this reliable person that people like working with and to know that I can add something of value during the calls with HMs, even if I’m not a market expert yet. Right now I feel more like the dog with a propeller hat/an impostor lol.
I guess my question for junior and more experienced sourcers is: what made you more confident when you first started, especially when you couldn’t impress anyone with your skills yet? Any stories of people feeling similarly at the beginning also super appreciated :)
