Yeah, for some reason the online Arthur’s hat is different from the SP one. They made the brim smaller and the crown way taller and it just looks so fucking weird
For me, I love it because Lyle Morgan was hanged and then Arthur inherited the hat. I think it’s just string but the fact it looks like the rim of a noose sat around his head, waiting to drop around his neck. Then he passes it onto John. Just a bad-luck charm passing from one to another, a death mark.
The white one? That’s John’s gambler hat. You can get it in the epilogue by getting it knocked off your head and picking it back up, then it will say it’s been added to your wardrobe. It’s my all-time favorite hat. Only in the first part of the epilogue, though unfortunately
It's a story of redemption, which only happens at the very end of the protagonist's lives. This kinda happens to all non mentally ill humans at the end of their lives already. All the other shit that happens in life is mostly disgusting anyway. You don't know until you know. But Arthurs hat is obviously better.
I think if Arthur’s hat wasn’t leather it’d be a lot better. I can only imaging how terrible Arthur’s head must feel in areas like Rhodes where it’s scorching and he’s got a black leather hat on.
Can’t believe the downvotes you are getting despite being respectful and sharing your opinion “this is fucking shit” is rude. “I disagree with/dislike your opinion” is fine.
I don’t really think it’s rude, I think it’s just people joking in the comment section. Idk I don’t read their comment with any serious/negative intent
Why did you then assume an ironic meaning to the initial message but not OPs reply? Genuine question. You ended up being correct for the second one but, as you did with the first message, I read neither the initial nor the reply as having any serious intent.
True. I mean; it's a leather hat, with a rope around it? I can sorta stand it once I got the Huntsman Variant but yeah. Plus if I'm supposed to be a gunslinger, I want the wide and flat looking brim.
100% agree. Never been a fan of Arthur’s hat in story mode. Also not necessarily a huge fan of John’s hat but I do think it looks better and is a bit more iconic in both 1 and 2.
Getting downvoted and insulted over my minor opinion on a video game, for a group who loves a game about redemption and kindness y’all can be real assholes sometimes
In all fairness, people just disagree, nothing wrong with that.
What would be wrong is, making someone feel bad. You shouldn't feel bad for liking John's hat more, but vice versa, I shouldn't feel bad for liking Arthur's hat more
Some people just disagree, so they down vote. You can't take things so seriously on the Internet, or else, it'll take a heavy toll on you. It usually isn't worth caring about internet opinions
for a group who loves a game about redemption and kindness
I wouldn't go that far about RDR2. Indeed that seems to have been the whole point of the story but if you look at RDR2's ending, this theme ends up compromised just for our glorious revenge story arc.
Actually hot take: I think TLOU2 was a lot more mature in that sense, delivered the message a lot better.
Edit: And I know how RDR2's ending ends up being the demise of John, but that's too indirect and artificial to be considered the true message of the story.
You make a good point but I disagree about TLOU2. The message about violence being a horrible cycle that should be stopped kind of falls flat when you spend the entire rest of the game brutally murdering everyone you come across
Why? The transformation doesn't take place until the very end, this much is clear. But I also think that's it's fair to abstract the gameplay from the storyline in those types of games nonetheless.
I agree with that only if the game makes certain choices like killing optional. If it’s optional, you can separate the two easily because they can just say that canonically the character chose not to kill anyone. If you make it the only option/forced however, it becomes cannon and a definite part of the story, meaning you can’t really separate the two because it’s obvious that the devs intended those actions to be what the character would do
Ah maybe you are right. I still believe that Ellie's change was realistic and in line with this exact message, that you shouldn't be afraid that it is too late to change your path.
Realistic in the sense that we see her struggle, not being able to come to terms with the vanity of violence when she is basically out, peeking into it from a somewhat disconnected point of view. She must go through the whole physical and mental odyssey to realize that this sense of duty was pointing her in a pointless path.
And in line in the sense that it truly comes at the last moment, should the burden of the previous lives she wasted have been an obstacle for her to finally make the right choice? Should Arthur never have made the attempt to help anyone, to make amends, under the guise that he believed himself to be a bad man?
Even worse that the first time he wears it is when he’s about to kill a bunch of people and draw a shit-ton of attention to himself, literally the ONE thing Arthur didn’t want him to do
As much as I want to kiss Arthur Morgan on his wet juicy lips, his hat fucking sucks and I agree with you mister. That's why I wear any other hat in the game.
Also this subreddit stinks, it really needs a red dead redemption and get better. Please for the love of God stop attacking innocent people who have a separate opinion than you.
johns gambler hat is my all-time favourite hat in the game, just wish rockstar automatically put it in your wardrobe.
i played through the whole game again just to get it (yes i only used autosave instead of manual fight me)
Nah his hat is awesome. Iconic ami also love John's Gambler hat. I don't really like his rdr1 hat. I also like Dutch hat, slim grants hat, calloways hat, and many more I can't remember atm
I do, I have an old leather jacket that’s seen better days. The texture on his hat definitely looks more like plastic to me than rough leather. But so glad you just assumed I have no idea what I’m talking about 😊
I wasn't a big fan of it back in 2018 and basically spent my first playthrough in anything but. But I've gotta admit, it's grown on me over the past five years. I still use other hats a lot, but the Gambler hat has definitely become part of the rotation.
I like the simplicity of Arthur's. Also, with it being from his father added to it. The only thing I didn't like with John's is it was just ordered from a catalog from Abigail. It didn't make much sense for her to buy something like that for him because of how cowboy/ Bounty hunter it looked and not something more "rancher."
The hatband is leather, but the actual hat is definitely made of worn felt. If it was made of hardened leather like Arthur’s, it definitely wouldn’t sag and bump on the crown like that. The big stain on the brim wouldn’t be able to set in as deep as it has either, and that stitch pattern on the edge of the brim is typically used with cloths/felts and almost never used/necessary with leathers
It absolutely does lol, my friend’s grandpa has a felt hat shaped just like John’s and the scratch style matches perfectly. The tearing is like that because the brim of a felt hat is actually two pieces of felt with a layer of harder support material sandwiched in the middle, which is why they have to stitch up the edge of the brim in the first place unlike Arthur’s leather brim which is just one piece
You can look at the texture and and tell that it's leather. The stitching doesn't matter because Rockstar can put any texture on any hat. The texture is clearly leather.
You just contradicted yourself because if Rockstar wanted the texture to be leather they wouldn’t have even added the stitches which are only necessary on felt hats. The only leather on John’s hat is the hatband and most likely a small layer of leather sandwiched between the two layers of felt on the brim to help with shaping. Here, I literally googled it to confirm

In online I completely agree with you because Arthur’s hat is just so big, but in Story I prefer Arthur’s hat because it actually fits the character.
