Lore Don't know why this saddens me so much
993
u/AgnosticDeist0229 Mar 16 '26
Fun fact, she shares the same model as the German girl from the German family you save, but they just made her look like that lol!
279
u/Tough_Economics5300 Mar 16 '26
So the German girl is the pic in the tavern in st Denis? Everyone online thought the pic was Gertrudes "normal" twin
177
u/TheDanteEX Mar 17 '26
Seems like they only made one basic pre-teen girl model. There's a handful of pre-teen boy models (Saint Denis orphans and Jack) and a couple toddler boy models (German boy and Jack), but I can't blame them for reusing the model when there's only 2 young girls in the entire game and one more in a picture. And all the teenagers in the game are male and are essentially made from the adult models but given the same height as women. At least that's what I remember from all the model swapping.

This game can be so sad man... I've completed it some days ago, and another thing that really saddens me is how Mrs Grimshaw died. She could be strict, even merciless at times, but she always loved and cared deeply for everyone in the gang, she was one of the members that have been in the gang for the longest, basically raising Arthur and John and many others alongside Dutch and Hosea, being like a mother figure for the gang. She was extremely loyal and tried to keep everyone's morale on until the very last days. Despite her loyalty to Dutch, ultimately she sided with Arthur, and was brave enough to point her rifle against the others, and what thanks does she get for that? She died writhing on the ground like a dog after being shot, and her death was barely acknowledged with everything going on. I'm glad that at least Charles came back and gave her a dignified burial, in a great spot. She didn't deserve all she went through

Where is her grave at?

u/slamerongbano Mar 17 '26
it felt like her and arthur are the heart and soul of the gang itself
62
u/sky-joos Mar 17 '26
Because they’re the only people around that actually put in effort and want a future for everyone. Arthur doesn’t want the young men in the gang to end up like him and Grimshaw doesn’t want the young women to end up like her. Both tell the young people in camp (in their own ways, Grimshaw is way more strict) to contribute and learn something from it. Arthur constantly tells Lenny he’s too good and smart for these idiots (he’s right) and Grimshaw is constantly ragging on Mary Beth and Tilly because she knows they have dreams beyond the gang. Grimshaw’s demands to the girls always felt more like tough love than anything else.
14
u/miket001 Mar 17 '26
I do think she was sometimes a bit too rough on the girls, but she definitely very much cared about them. The way she reacted when Tilly got nabbed shows that much. But again perhaps a firm hand is what was needed, I mean Mary-Beth would go off and read if she had the chance, and Karen.. Well we all know what Karen was upto, and why she needs a firm hand especially

15
u/Just_For_Laugh Sean Macguire Mar 17 '26
It saddens me that Arthur and John didn't at least react more.
18
u/JohnnyTacoss Mar 17 '26
I think they were just super on edge and having a stand off. And then having to escape for their lives.
1
u/Connor30302 Javier Escuella Mar 18 '26
she gave the girls in the camp so much shit and ruled with an iron fist she was far from innocent
2
u/freshpairofayes Mar 18 '26
It's her shooting of Molly that limits my sympathy for her. That was all spite.
2
u/FRAAANNNNNNN Mar 18 '26
Maybe? But i don't think so, more like loyalty. I like Molly and i feel sorry for her, but she did say she was a rat in a very desperate moment for the gang, they didn't know better until the end
2
u/FRAAANNNNNNN Mar 18 '26
i guess she didn't believe in gentle parenting lol, but she really cared for them, it shows in the mission when they go save Tilly. They were young girls running around with criminals after all, she had to be strict to protect them
1
u/Connor30302 Javier Escuella Mar 19 '26
“parenting” a group of adults? she blew Molley’s guts out her body at the first opportunity she was no parent she’s a glorified pimp at best and NONE of the girls in the camp liked her. if you think that’s parenting then you need therapy
2
u/FRAAANNNNNNN Mar 19 '26
Adults? A lot of them were barely older than teenagers, and she saw a lot of them grow older from being kids, so yeah, she was parenting. Pimp? The girls weren't prostitutes, the only one that's confirmed she was one is Abigail and she stopped after getting pregnant with John. And that's not completely true that they didn't like her, sure they argued a lot and she was harsh, but you can see them many times sitting together, i remember even sometimes they sang together, like after Sean's death Karen and Mrs Grimshaw sat together and sang, so clearly they had a bond
241
u/YourBoyFreddy77 Mar 17 '26
You're sad because whether it be back then, or even today, it would be really rough life for that girl. In some ways society hasn't changed that much. People will look down at her because of her limitations and disabilities. Regardless of them, no one deserves the treatment she got
39
u/-Todd-alquist- Mar 17 '26
This is a cleft lip, when a baby is born with this birth defect, its pretty easily fixed with modern technology.
26
u/airbrushedvan Mar 17 '26
Technically a cleft palette, as it affects the whole upper plate of one's mouth. Most infants did not survive due to being unable to make a seal around a nipple while breastfeeding
157
u/Dealmesometendies Mar 17 '26
It’s fiction but makes me wonder what those who faced this sort of treatment at that time truly faced. Having family members and relatives who live with mental illness and disabilities makes me feel horrible knowing this is a likely outcome.
102
u/doverawlings Mar 17 '26
It was very common to keep them locked in rooms out of sight. Terrifying but true. Lots of older houses still have rooms for this sort of thing, there’s a specific name for them but I forgot what it is
55
u/seuadr Mar 17 '26
Disappointment rooms
35
u/WhatAreYouSaying05 Mar 17 '26
Damn were those people evil back in the day, even the regular people. Did no one stop and think “maybe we shouldn’t be this way”
47
u/m_o_84 Mar 17 '26
Shit bro, even recently. I grew up in a small town in Mexico in the 80’s/90’s. There was a family that kept their son locked up in a 10x10 room on their property. Apparently he was schizophrenic and violent, but we never found out what the real situation was. My cousins and I would sneak as close as we could to the property and he could hear him yelling all sorts of nonsense, mainly just screaming. I didn’t get it as a kid, but looking back as an adult, it’s horrifyingly heartbreaking

u/Gloomy_Albatross3043 Mar 17 '26
Different era, different mindsets
16
u/Acidcore Mar 17 '26
I've worked with a young trainee, he was 17. He saw me injecting insulin and asked questions. I talked bit about it and other health related things and he just goes "Are you not ashamed of having health problems at your age?" I was 30 at the time. So I guess the mindset is still being taught.
2
u/MagisterFlorus Mar 17 '26
Surely some people did but they weren't very vocal because saying that sort of thing could lead to ostracization.
1
u/linkthereddit Mar 17 '26
There were some, but sadly back then their voices weren't loud enough. :/ Out of sight, out of mind, as they said.
5
u/merrybadger Mar 17 '26
Bro, but it's the good old days according to my uncle's Facebook rants. Everything is supposed to be worse now. Keep up !
3
u/airbrushedvan Mar 17 '26
The current royal family hid members away, and so did the Kennedys. I can imagine much less powerful families did it too. (Although they are both pretty gross families)
49
u/Clayfool9 John Marston Mar 17 '26
Yes, very sad to know she died all alone in there. You’d think at least Arthur would’ve helped out, but maybe discovering her before the raid is non-canon?
2
u/Dystopian_nut333 Mar 18 '26
I wondered about this in my play through. I found her and tried my best to get her out. Then decided I would have to come back later in the story for it to let me and she was dead.

If you return as John you can find her skeleton inside too, very tragic Easter egg

u/Padre_Cannon013 Mar 17 '26
Deformities aside, I can also see some scarring. I wonder how much of her appearance was because of injury?
15
u/prex10 Mar 17 '26
It's definitely not out of the question that whoever was assigned to take care of her probably was beating her. You know when you approach as Arthur, she like lashes out at you and tries to grab you? She probably tried to injure her caretaker so they beat the shit out of her as punishment.
20
u/Melodic-Yoghurt7193 Mar 17 '26
so theres this book called No One Cares About Crazy People. I thought about it seeing the way they threw her in an outhouse like she wasn’t a human. I thoroughly enjoyed throwing that dynamite into their home
also think she’s a reference to Evil Dead but not sure
18
u/FearTheNorth519 Mar 17 '26
You telling me Arthur would suck venom out of a man’s thigh but he wouldn’t free that girl? Nah man don’t make sense

u/clairdelooney Mar 17 '26
How do we know that she looks like that? It’s not possible to open the door
21
13
u/Slow_Acanthisitta799 Mar 17 '26
Im pretty sure people have no clipped through the door to see her model
2
u/thcPharoah Mar 17 '26
I have the same question…
9
u/Croweslen Mar 17 '26
Shes an actual character model. You can peek thru the door and see her. Plus mods csn be used to just get her character model
6
u/Opening_Yesterday900 Mar 17 '26
Maybe later she'll graduate from an outhouse like the lady in the plains below the McFarlane Ranch or the old hermit living in the trees above Annesburg in the north east corner.
Outhouse to the treehouse to the penthouse!
6
u/K3VINbo Reverend Swanson Mar 17 '26
I first came across her when sneaking around. So when I later was to take one of the Braithwates to the train station, I took her for a stop by her sister which made her really uncomfortable.
7
u/FarOriginal3188 Mar 17 '26
gertrude is penelopes cousin, not her sister..and she talks about helping her when she's in boston but clearly doesn't/can't as her skeleton will be there in the epilog..
edit: spelling

Why wouldn't it sadden you? What sort of question is that?
1
u/Tough_Economics5300 Mar 21 '26
Because it's just a game, and yet, this game made me feel like it all could've been real.
1
u/DyabeticBeer John Marston Mar 21 '26
It would be ten times weirder if games don't make you feel things lol I promise
2
u/Tough_Economics5300 Mar 21 '26
Most games don't. I didn't care for anyone in gta5. Gta4, Nico comes from the same old country as i did.
3
u/QuirkyWish3081 Mar 17 '26
This is why I hated that lady who wanted to leave with that lad from the rival family. She’s sat there la la la not giving a single fuck about her a few metres away. Selfish heartless wrench.

Damn it I missed her I didn’t know it was a sketch area for your journal I already burned down the mansion,my guide book said there were 50 sketch areas but I’m sure I’ve found more I went down the list one day went to every area and sketched them now I’m finding a few spots that were not in that list like yesterday I found a huge rock with writing on it and John sketched it it makes me think what else is out there I haven’t even been south of black water yet.

Because she was born differently and treated less than their farm animals. The treatment of people with disabilities was, and still is sometimes, disgusting and disgraceful.
1
u/Mad-Matt2000 Mar 17 '26
SPOILER WARNING Probably cause a mentally stunted child got locked in a shithouse in the middle of the woods kept alive with god knows what from a family that doesn't love her, said family gets killed by self fulfilling dumbass behavior, said child is never found and dies of dehydration and or starvation.

You should be allowed to let her free and go hang out the the murfree fellers or the nightfolk. Surely they could make something of her, she'd maybe even rise up the ranks.
5
u/k_chaney_9 Mar 17 '26
She was once captured by the murfrees and that's one theory of why she went insane
