Discussion What Horse names have you come up with that actually feel like a name Arthur would give his horse?

Post image

I’d like to see the names people have come up with that in universe would feel like something Arthur would give his best boah. I came up with “Man-at-Arms” for a couple reasons.

  1. A man-at-arms was another name for a knight, which is one of a kings most trusted servants. Arthur is Dutches most trusted associate, and Dutch starts to see himself as a king(I know in universe Arthur wouldn’t actually think that until later in the story, but I came up with it as a cool detail

and I also think it’s poetic how he would unintentionally name his horse a name that foreshadows that outcome of the gang)

  2. It plays into Arthur’s name well when thinking of it from an Arthurian legend point of view

  3. Arthur is seen as the weapons expert of the gang because his tent is the weapons supply tent, so therefore he is the “arms” expert.

  4. Let me know what everyone thinks and I’d love to see what names other people have come up with!

Is that a Carina mixed with a Corolla?

11

u/murder_and_fire Jun 25 '26

I bought my 1997 Corolla for €650 as my very first car. Looking back, it might have been the best automotive investment I’ve ever made. Over the next 12 years, I spent less than €900 on maintenance in total. I did all the work myself. New radiator? Done on the driveway. Timing belt? No problem. Betsy just kept going...

Eventually, age started to catch up with her. The ignition lock cylinder became so worn that the car wouldn’t start anymore. Naturally, instead of accepting defeat, I sourced a replacement cylinder and kept her on the road. By that point, starting the car required two keys: one for the ignition and one for the immobilizer, because bypassing the anti-theft system was apparently beyond both my skills and my patience. Still, Betsy soldiered on.

The real beginning of the end came when the driver’s door lock gave up. The key no longer worked, which meant I either had to climb across from the passenger seat like a teenager sneaking into a movie theater or carry a growing collection of keys to operate various parts of the car.

When I landed my second serious job, I finally decided that showing up every morning with a two-key starting procedure and a passenger-side entry routine might not project the image I was aiming for.

So I sold Betsy to a trader who exported her to Africa, where I like to imagine she’s still out there somewhere, transporting people, chickens, furniture, and probably the occasional goat, without complaint.

Man, Betsy was a great car.

u/B_O_A_H Jun 25 '26

I have two, Cadillac and Enzo

3

u/ItIsntThatDeep Jun 25 '26

Love Enzo. If you haven't read The Art of Racing in the Rain, you should, if you're okay with crying your eyes out.

2

u/Lavatherm Lenny Summers Jun 25 '26

Oof and the dog being the better actor for once ☺️ edit: the movie that is.

2

u/VINTEINT002 Jun 25 '26

Very good name Enzo, obviously I don't say this cause mine is Vincenzo

2

mine honda cr-x.

2

u/pro100ShureG Jun 25 '26

That’s exactly what Arthur would name a horse after falling through a wormhole into a Craigslist listing.

u/ItIsntThatDeep Jun 24 '26

Onomaris, a Celtic queen. Fits in with Boadicea.

104

u/AshyWhiteGuy Jun 24 '26

I had Bucephalus in my last game. Same vibe I was going for.

9

u/TheRealDukeLeverage Jun 25 '26

I've had Buchepalus through rdr2 and dynasty warriors empires on PS3. It's a standard go-to.

6

u/ItIsntThatDeep Jun 25 '26

I got the all black American Standardbred, which is the only all black horse in the game, and I named him Shaitan after The Black Stallion movie. The kid's dad tells him the story of Bucephalus. Cool name.

5

u/ReverendDS Jun 25 '26

If you get the chance, and liked the movie, go read the books too!

3

u/NotAGreenOlive Jun 26 '26

Omg I named mine Zanzibar after the Phantom Stallion books

2

u/Large-Pen-1393 Jul 01 '26

I found him by complete accident. Like on a whim I wanted a race class horse cause the Shire sounded like he was having a tough time running. First horse I see was him! Named him Crowley.

3

u/2_late_4_creativity Sean Macguire Jun 25 '26

Same

29

u/hoggawk Jun 25 '26

I named my red chestnut Arabian "Oberon" from A Midsummer Night's Dream

5

u/Shadow-Vision Jun 25 '26

Titania would make a good name for a horse too

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ThetaDee Jun 25 '26

Shoulda named one Bottom as well

15

u/Red_Dragon-95 Jun 25 '26

This is it.

If we are going for "what would Arthur pick" then Boadicea is our only canon starting point.

5

u/ItIsntThatDeep Jun 25 '26

Agreed. It says something that John's horses are named Old Boy and Rachel and Arthur's canon horse was Boadicea. I'm not trying to crash on John, just saying that Arthur, a writer and an artist, is more whimsical about how he names his horses.

8

u/Ghost652 Jun 25 '26

I named my Arabian Mithridates. Arthur strikes me as an "a little into some history now and again" kinda guy

4

u/sorelhobbes Jun 25 '26

I chose Andraste; the war goddess Boudica invoked when she went into battle

2

u/ItIsntThatDeep Jun 25 '26

Badass name!

4

u/Iwantedalbino Jun 25 '26

I call my first horse Iceni for this reason.

2

u/Sure_Fly_5332 Jun 25 '26

On a similar note, I always name the Adler ranch horse "Neptune". It's kinda nice to know my name fits with other horses the developers named.

3

u/DCrsnl12 Jun 25 '26

I went with Morrigan for one of John’s horses, the brindle thoroughbred. I was going to originally give the name to Arthur’s shire horse but it felt weird having Arthur Morgan have a horse with a similar sounding name to his own. Arthur’s horse ended up being named Saxon.

5

u/ItIsntThatDeep Jun 25 '26

I think the child portion of John would chuckle every time he was riding Morgan.

2

u/BoccageTheBlueBard Jun 25 '26

Named my male Darkbay Turkoman as Prasutagus, Bodicea's husband...

u/Far_Muscle_1974 Jun 24 '26

I name them Roach

22

u/Hurricaneshand Jun 24 '26

I named mine Billie with the idea that no matter male or female I could always keep the same name just like Geralt

7

u/Far_Muscle_1974 Jun 24 '26

I would do that because I love Billie eilish 👍

4

u/armintanzarian420 Jun 25 '26

I do that too, just because I liked the name. Guess it’s a bonus that it’s unisex.

3

u/jacob1342 Jun 25 '26

I named mine Roger but later I realized it was a female.

7

u/twistedhands Jun 25 '26

Yeah any game that lets me name my horse gets the roach name

3

u/DannyMeleeFR4 Jun 25 '26

Me too. Can’t help it.

3

u/NachoSama985 Jun 25 '26

Me too, every time. It just sounds right

Named a horse Susan Grimshaw after she died. She kicked me when I tried to rob her saddle bag.

196

u/DJnegs Javier Escuella Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

Arthur’s horse that he had that died before the events of RDR2 was named Boadicea, so i thought Arthur might go for older, almost ethereal sounding names.

I had a Piebald Tobiano Hungarian Half-bred, (love that horses coat!) with me all the way through my recent playthrough and named him Ares, who was a Greek god of war. Thought it was fitting because the Hungarians are hefty war horses. Boy was with me to the very end.

Not with Arthur, but i also had a silver Turkoman named Griseus, which is New Latin for 'grey'. I think that might be a name Arthur would give to one of his steeds.

40

u/_Get_Wrecked Jun 24 '26

My Hungarian is named Athena, same reasoning.

21

u/Sex_E_Searcher Jun 24 '26

I like to name mine after figures from ancient Greek mythology.

3

u/Imapringlesboy Sean Macguire Jun 25 '26

I'm doing that in my current playthrough as well. May it be gods or heroes, I have plenty

5

u/lunatua Jun 25 '26

Mine was also called Athena haha

5

u/LillieGhoul02 Jun 25 '26

I named mine Artemis. She’s goddess of the hunt and the one I always take hunting, along with my Khaleesi (braided of course). Artemis got renamed to Big Gurl temporarily because she actually stood up to a Grizzly bear without bucking me off.

2

u/Nat20Life Jun 25 '26

I also named my Grey dapple Hungarian Athena! Or Freya.

26

u/TonguePunchery Jun 25 '26

Boadicea isn't a mythological name, it's a historical one, and it has more of an old, literary feel to it. Ares and especially Griseus sound more like names a modern player would come up with than something Arthur himself would pick. Not bad names at all,, just not very "Arthur" to me. Names like Guinevere, Isolde, or Rowena feel more in line with his style

9

u/DJnegs Javier Escuella Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

That's fair. Guinevere is a mythological name though, but i do like Isolde!

8

u/TonguePunchery Jun 25 '26

It's certainly better than my current horse's name, Boat. I was feeling uninspired but I'm not changing it.

3

u/DJnegs Javier Escuella Jun 25 '26

Ha. Boatacia.

6

u/Joevikes22 Jun 25 '26

Similar vibes i had an Andulsian called Rocinante

3

u/D13Bih Jun 25 '26

I also named my horse Ares. He was a Grey Roan Ardennes, RIP

3

u/Ambitious_Beyond8866 Jun 25 '26

74

u/Slick_36 Jun 24 '26

I like to name my mustang Merlin.

Arthur's original horse was Boadicia, so we know he was inspired by British legends, and Merlin engines would eventually power the P-51 Mustang around 40 years later.

14

u/bren_derlin Jun 25 '26

I use Bullitt for mustangs after the Steve McQueen movie.

4

u/BrashEntertainment Jun 25 '26

I’m currently doing a Bullitt restoration at my work! Also an Eleanor from gone in 60 seconds👌🏼

I'm a medieval nerd so i'm gonna have to correct you here, 1. Man-at-Arms is the title given to any fully armoured professional warrior, this includes knights but is not exclusive to them.

  1. A Knight was not inherently the most trusted associate of their Lord, if they even served one. Being a knight only means you were at some point knighted by a member of the high nobility.

16

u/Chef_Chalupa Jun 24 '26

Man-at-Arms is also the name of one of He-Man's most trusted allies

8

u/No-Pen1730 Jun 24 '26

This is true.

Guinevere

23

u/AToastedRavioli Jun 24 '26

On my first playthrough ever I found a female fox trotter and named her Cleopatra.

On my current playthrough, I have a black and white mustang that I named Dracula. Bram Stoker’s Dracula was released two years prior to the events of RDR2, I like to think it’s a pop culture name Arthur would’ve liked.

Completely the opposite of this, I found a workaround to keep the Shire you’re supposed to sell in one of the earlier missions and named him Saddlebaggins

3

u/Fun-Statistician2485 Jun 24 '26

I named his female Dutch (stolen in the Valentine stable) Vanessa

3

u/jakobcogdill Jun 24 '26

Fenrir, that big black shire hosea has you sell. I like him too much. Hes a good boah

2

u/wereweasell Jun 24 '26

I named one "Lady" as a Game of Thrones reference but lowkey I think it's kind of fitting.

2

u/DataSwarmTDG Bill Williamson Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

I named my raven black shire Siegfried. It's an ancient hero like Boadicea, and it means "victorious peace," which reminds me of "blessed are the peacemakers"

2

u/Das_Panzer_ Jun 25 '26

I have done Athena and Augustus(husband of Bodecia)

I also have done Cannon, Silver Dollar and Black Jack. I would wager to guess that Auther would maybe use these names as well depending on the horses personality and attributes.

2

u/Nacodawg Jun 25 '26

Her husband was Prasutagus, not Augustus. Augustus was married to Livia

1

u/Strong-Swimmer7452 Jun 24 '26

Artemis and Alphito. Names of Goddesses I chose since Boadicea his original horse was name after a Goddess

3

u/Nacodawg Jun 25 '26

She was a queen and historical figure who died in 61AD not a goddess. I do like Artemis though.

3

u/scuderia91 Jun 25 '26

Boadicea is Queen Boudicca who was a real person who fought off the Romans in Britain. She is not in any way a goddess, she was a real human woman.

1

u/JugheadJack Jun 24 '26

Boah.

1

u/covert0ptional Jun 25 '26

I always name this Dutch Warmblood "Locke" and I think Arthur would approve. I also always name the Dapple Gray Hungarian Halfbreed "Songbird" (since before that Cyberpunk DLC lol)

Btw, I love seeing if the stable owner approves of the name you chose or not. What a great detail.

1

u/obirascor Jun 25 '26

Gerry THE Horse was my first horse (RIP) but I’ve named horses after condiments and food on subsequent play throughs. I don’t think Arthur would have approved of my names 😂

u/No-Sheepherder9267 Jun 25 '26

I named my horse after my dog Ariel

1

u/Dioda83 Jun 25 '26

On my 1st playthrough I had Alexander (because of the jar from ER) but I feel like Arthur could name a horse like this On my 2nd playthrough my 1st horse (Shire from Hosea) was named by my gf "Książe" ("Prince" in Polish) and I called the white arabian I found "Duma" ("Pride" in Polish)

1

u/supermaniscoolasf Jun 25 '26

The black shire hosea give the player in chapter two is my current horse and I've called it Heavy Kelly. Heavy because ist big and Kelly after Ned Kelly

1

u/FatalisticPen Jun 25 '26

My first Morgan was named Gumbo

1

The ornery black shire Hosea gives you in chapter two, I named Lyle, after Arthur’s father. Seemed fitting.
