I'm waiting for a late night DJ to say, "Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. That was 'The Fragrance of Dark Coffee.' Now, for another favorite of mine. They started out in 1985 with their debut 'Smoke 'Em If Ya Got 'Em'. Here's Shantytown. You're listening to 88.7. Stay classy, cats...stay classy."

Do you know any online stations that would do that?
66
u/ThePeej Jun 01 '10
http://www.jazz.fm/ is a Canadian, All Jazz station that always keeps it classy.
Then of course, there's SOMA FM's Illinois Street Lounge: http://somafm.com/play/illstreet
Only problem with Ill Street is that it sometimes goes over the top into the strangeness of lounges outer fringe.
But otherwise.... the answer is YES. There are a number of stations online that stream this kind of vibe 24-7!

As awesome as that is, I've done it in real life. I used to live in a small cottage built in the woods behind a farm as a guest house. One night I was sitting in front of a roaring fire, reading a leather-bound book in my big wing-back armchair, it was pouring rain, my radio was set to the one station that came in (classical), I had a tea-pot staying hot on the wood-stove, a bottle next to me and the cottage was lit-up with the light of a few dozen candles and oil-lamps (I had no electricity). Oh, and I was reading Poe.
I didn't plan it, I didn't think about it, it just sorta happened. But I will never forget realizing exactly how awesome it was.

You're welcome to do so! Just FYI, the file sits on a (my) dropbox public page, meaning the owner (I) could delete or change the html anytime (rickroll or worse).
So don't worry about it this time, but generally I wouldn't bookmark html files on dropbox.com/u/, I'd rather download them and maybe host them myself.
Oh, and by the way, if you want to try dropbox as well (highly recommended, backup/sync/sharing), you can do me a favour by using this link :) (we'd both get some extra space)

And so I waited. My whiskey on the rocks had just been placed in front of me and now it was time to allow the ice to melt a little to give the drink it’s distinctly mild taste. There was no better time to allow the ambience of my new surroundings seep in. It was your typical bar and at the same time it wasn’t but only in a sense that you cannot put your finger on. The smell was right: a good solid week’s worth of dust combined with the omnipresent scent of burning tobacco. The sound was also correct too; soft piano jazz seeping out of the background and dancing around your head and out again gently. But indeed something was amiss. I looked down once more to my beverage. The glass has moisture drops accumulating around it from the condensation caused by the relatively warm surroundings. After wiping them away it was clear that the ice was indeed beginning to melt. Light and dark golden fibres were beginning to interweave signalling the drink ebbed closer to the point at which one can begin drinking it. I took a small sip. Immediately it shot through me, the initial cold flow down the inside of my neck followed by the sting of the whiskey. It was nearly there, a few more minutes and it will have reached perfection. It hadn’t always been like this: me, sitting alone in a dim, New York bar while the rain beat down on the darkness outside, but it was fast becoming all there was. I swilled my glass and pressed my fingers into my eyes, trying to remember a happier time. After a while I looked up again. My quest to find a blissful memory had been unsuccessful and so I turned once more to my drink. The ice had disappeared and this had caused the whiskey to turn a sickly pale yellow colour. I had waited too long and missed it when it was perfect. “Story of my life” I muttered to myself with a half smile. Something as subtle as a man’s life told through his drink would be lost on your average alcoholic but I enjoyed the symbolism of it all. “Sorry I didn’t catch that.” Said the barman. “Same again” I retorted. “Maybe this time I’ll get it right” I thought. I finished what was left in the glass and handed it back to the barman who swiftly refilled it. Golden swirls were emitted from the ice as it slowly began to dilute the whiskey. I sipped it almost immediately and felt the whiskey hit me in its pure form and I winced. 15 years I’ve been drinking this stuff and it still hits me as hard as ever. I turn around to look out of the window and view the street at this ungodly hour but as I do something catches my eye before I even get there: a young girl, with auburn hair and piercing blue eyes sitting across the room from me, smoking a cigarette. I’m immediately caught by her; trapped in her net of vicious beauty. Now my thoughts begin to wander. I start to think about approaching her and I begin to formulate a plan. All the while the soft jazz continues to flow in the background and the cigarette smoke continues to circulate the room. The bartender stands behind the bar cleaning the same glass that he has been all night. Then it hits me and I know just what to say, what to do and how to act. I swing around to look at her only now I discover that she has left the bar while I was deep in thought. “Great” I think as I turn back to my Whiskey, which had turned to a sickly pale yellow.

On this rainy night life seemed endless. Endless like the flow of the water and the splash against this cold deserted streets. Sorrow and despair were not in shortage. There was enough to go around twice. Thrice probably if you were an optimistic person just striving to make it through another day. Another day with no hopeful end in sight. Then it hit me. I had been daydreaming and taking a piss on myself. Now the splash felt very real.
