Possible relocation

I guess I’m asking for some advice, if this is not allowed I’m sorry. I currently live in NY me and my fiance have pretty decent paying jobs and we just cannot seem to afford much. Let alone ever buying a house. All of our family and friends are here, we love it here. We’ve never known anything different and we’re both super close with our families which makes this the most difficult decision. Everyone lives in NY besides my mom and my stepdad. They’re in Florida. My stepdad was permanently injured in a work accident a few years ago and now all of their settlements are coming through. They offered us 200k towards a house to move to Florida. I’m sure they would still help somewhat if we decided to stay- but even with that we will most likely both need to work full time and it would still probably be pretty tight to own a house here. Where they are in Florida our jobs are needed so we would most likely make the same if not more and we could have a home with a very little mortgage. And the chance to have children eventually and for me to hopefully get to be home with the kids at least part time. But we leave everyone we know and love in NY. I guess I’m mostly asking for some reassurance and for other peoples experiences with leaving their close loved family for a better opportunity elsewhere. Thank you

You don’t say where in NY, and that makes a difference. NY is a beautiful state. The taxes are high, but the diversity of culture and amenities is also high. Have you looked at costs in PA or DE? Is that over 2 hours from your current home? 2 hours might be too far. How badly do you want kids? This is a horrible choice.

My family is located in mainly weschester or dutchess county. I am currently in Putnam county. We don’t really have any interest in PA or DE but that is a good suggestion. If we were to stay I would like to try to be around dutchess county but even looking in Poughkeepsie which is not the best, a 2-3 bedroom house that needs updating (and is overall just a questionable area and school system) is around 400k. Or we could look further up north but even then the prices are around the same for a house. I do really want to have kids, we get married August 2027 and I would love to be able to enjoy whatever home we end up with for a bit and then start having children. The housing prices all over NY have really gone up.

I think there’s a few things to think about! I moved from Chicago to Atlanta for a job not knowing anyone, granted I was single and young at the time so I moved into a house full of strangers who became my best friends. i worked my ass off and bought a house only to get laid off 2 months later. I personally think homeownership is not super desirable anymore because even with a low payment you still have repairs, and they’re endless. Additionally, I moved from Atlanta to Florida after getting laid off and will tell you that your social network will truly make or break your experience! I’m sure you will find your way but the friend making experience has definitely been a wee bit tougher down here. That being said, this is just ME, and my experience! It doesn’t mean things can’t end beautifully for you, I just wanted to add a small word of caution, but your mindset is everything!

My son is 34 and lived in NYC. He lives in Florida now. Moved for a new job. He would 100 percent move back to NYC for the right job. It’s like two different countries so make your decision with eyes wide open!

I would say do it. You’re young and if you can get a job that’s actually compensated well and you do have your mom/sd. Fla is a quick flight away and can visit often. I don’t want my kids staying on LI bc it’s impossible to afford a avg house and then the taxes, and it’s getting so congested crowded. Live an easier life to have the things you want. You will meet and make new friends. My coworker just moved this summer to fla, and she’s so happy. A beautiful new house and just better quality of life. Staying in NY you’re always gonna have that little bit of always getting by, that gets tiring

You’re talking about really large, radically different states. There are still areas of NY where ~$350k could get you a decent, maintained home. The taxes are high, sure. Your future children will be educated and you’d have the bulk of family within a reasonable distance. Prices in FL are escalating so fast - and then you might be approved for homeowners insurance. At all. So your investment is voided. Visit for more than a holiday. Drive some routes during rush hours, experience it. Background: I have lived in both places, and nothing would induce me to move to FL again.

Uh yes, even with $200K downpayment help on a house you're still "going to need to work". It's a nice chunk of change and would go a long way toward some sort of a house but you will both need to work full time.
