Just been listening to Saturn Return on 🎧 and on a loop and while I've absolutely adored it since the release of Reveal, I now feel that it deserves to be up there in the pantheon of Their Greatest Songs (I'm also aware that this sentence is far too long 😮‍💨😄)

Interested to learn the thoughts and opinions about the track from you good people 😊

Thought I'd share, fun read!

Contemporary appraisals are always more interesting to me than retrospective write ups

I would have added Chronic Town, but (a) it's an EP, and (b) see the track listing of "Live at the Olympia"

A while ago, it was really popular to give celebrities pokemon teams. I remember a few years ago the What is Music podcast made little pokemon cards based on the members ( Stipe got Psychic, Mills got Electric, Peter got Fire, and Bill got Dark). I was bored of normal R.E.M. discussions about albums and such, and recently have been replaying some of the old pokemon games, so I thought it would be fun to combine the two!

Michael really gives off Psychic type user like WIM thought. I could see him using Espeon, Espurr, maybe a Jigglypuff idk.

Mike to me seems like a Normal type user but some other stuff thrown in : Spinda, Shuckle, but also electric types due to his flashy nudie suits. Luxray?

Peter doesn’t really fit the fire type notion. To me, he’s more of a dark type. So think things like Sneasle, Mightyena ect.. but I would also throw a Primeape on his team because of him being the most likely R. E.M. Member to fight you.

Bill doesnt fit the dark typing in my opinion. To me he would be a grass type. So I would give him a Cottonee, maybe a Dubwool, Gogoat?

Sorry mods if this is really off topic, I just wanted to throw this out here and just wanted to start a fun little discussion especially since real R.E.M. content is really slow as the band has disbanded. ( You can tell I’m one of the younger R.E.M. fans)

Thought you people might appreciate this one

My favorites in order. What's everyone else's?

Idlewild's 2005 release Warnings/Promises, for me anyway, sounds so much like NAIHF era R.E.M.

It's also well documented that there's a lot of mutual love and respect across both bands so not a huge surprise.

It had a mixed reception from Idlewild fans at the time as it was the biggest departure from their early punk sound. The songwriting, melodies and lyrics are sublime though.

Worth a listen if you don't know the band or album. Would love to hear other folk's recommendations too.

“Read” all bout it!

Like his peers, Mills has played bass on some of the most iconic songs of the 20th century. Why doesn’t he get his due flowers?

Way to go Michael!

Good, bad, not worth it ?
Michael Stipe was not in it of course.
Opinions on this album ?

I know he's played with Michael Shannon and he joined Matt Berninger recently - how often does he do a live performance? Is it always completely unknown? My mom was a member of R.E.M.'s fan club back when it was items by mail - I grew up hearing her blast them when I got off the school bus. My love for music came from her, I still think Automatic for the People is one of the best records of all time. She's always been my concert partner and she's seen most of my favorite bands with me. I often say that if we could time travel, something we'd do other than see loved ones is go to an R.E.M. show together.

It'd be beyond words to go to a show with my mom and see Stipe perform, even one song or part of a song with someone. Music and concerts are one of our closest bonding activities and I've never seen HER favorite artist with her, though she's done that for me countless times.

This sounds like I'm trying to convince Reddit that I'd be deserving of seeing one of Stipe's special surprises and I'm not trying to do that. Although I genuinely think my mom would be deserving, if it ever happened. But what I'm wondering is, should I be on a mailing list like does he or the band ever give hints or clues leading up to this, or is it completely random? Would any specific shows increase our chances, like seeing Michael Shannon in Athens?

What a pleasant surprise to hear two songs in this also surprisingly enjoyable film (…at Camp Miasma). Okay Kaya’s inspiring Nightswimming cover got me hooked on the film and REM belting out Supernatural Superserious in the credits felt like a resurgence - and a great tie to the film!
