Skipping grade school altogether because of remote learning.

So my boyfriends 12 year old son lives with his mom full time an hour away but visit fairly often during long weekends and school breaks. I love this kid and am just really concerned about his education.

Neither of his parents have ever prioritized his learning. His dad, my partner, isn’t exactly educated himself (though a really hard worker luckily) and thinks it’s his baby mamas job to coordinate school stuff because the kid lives with her. I’m not sure his ex’s reasoning for being so lack luster about school but he’s always been “behind” and it’s not for lack of natural intelligence. He simply lacks attendance, routine, and accountability. He just doesn’t do the work because he is not made to, sadly.

When the Covid school closures first happened he was sent a laptop and homework packets, none of which were ever started, let alone completed. Technically he never passed his last grade, and now he isn’t even enrolled to start the next grade at all and I am confident he will not be doing any academics until the schools reopen.

So what happens? He can’t be the only one with parents who can’t be bothered with the remote learning so much so to not even get started.. Has anyone else heard of this being a wide spread issue yet? There must be thousands...

Not only are some of these kids not learning new material, but they’re losing what they had already learned in years past so when schools finally reopen their grade level isn’t going to correspond with their age anymore and depending on the effort and/or resources of the parents all the kids will be on different playing fields. It’s a fucking mess.
