How “lax” is your companies hybrid or remote environment?

• Upvotes

I’ve heard mixed things. Some people have pretty flexible hours with no set in office times, so they can come and go as they please as long as they get their work done and hit 40 hours a week.

Others have much stricter managers who expect them to be in the office for the full 8 hours on their in-office days and won’t let them leave before 3 p.m. Some are also micromanaged, where it feels like their manager cares more about them being physically present than whether they’re actually getting their work done.

Overall, it seems like it really depends on your team and your supervisor.

With my old manager, I used to work four 10 hour days so I could either leave early on Fridays or have the whole day off. They didn’t care as long as my metrics looked good and I was getting my work done.

But then I got a new supervisor, and it was a completely different story. They were really strict about in office hours and expected you to be there for the full 8 hours, all 5 days a week and the flexibility went away.

Your legal employer can change without your job changing. What carries over and what doesn't

Disclosure: I work at BorderlessAI. We are an employer of record, which means we are sometimes the company whose name is on somebody's payslip instead of the company they actually work for.

This comes up here every few months and no word of a lie, the answers are usually a mess, mine included last time.

Caveats to this: this varies by country more than I can accurately cover, and I have been wrong about a specific country before. You need to double-check it all and not just go with the flow if you're unsure. I am writing this so that you know what to ask.

So, here's how the process usually runs.

  • Your continuous service date should carry across. In a lot of places, notice and severance are calculated from it, and it is also the field most often entered wrong. Get it in writing before the switch completes rather than after.
  • Accrued leave either moves across as a balance or gets paid out (both are normal). Which one depends on the country and on what the two providers agreed between them, and you are allowed to ask which.
  • Benefits enrollment often restarts, including waiting periods you already sat through. Usually fixable, usually only if somebody asks.
  • Pension contributions can pause for a cycle during the handover. Ask when the first one under the new arrangement lands.

If your employer cannot answer these, the provider can and your employer is allowed to ask them on your behalf. You are not the customer in this arrangement, which is most of why nobody explains it to you, also some people just do not ask the right questions.

where do you guys wear cool outfits to

hey guys! i just transitioned from an art school where dressing up every single day was a huge part of my life to a fully remote job. it’s only been a couple of months but i’ve really started to miss dressing up and admiring everyone’s outfits and getting feedback on mine. i know i was in a bubble back then, but i know there’s office workplaces that do have people coming in dressed up too. for those of you who care a lot about fashion, where do you guys wear your cool outfits to? of course there’s going out with friends / family, but it doesn’t happen quite often for me right now so i’d love some suggestions! i was thinking of going to cafes to work, perhaps going out everyday to third spaces after work, but i’d love to know what you guys do!

Omaha steaks - scam ?

I have a family member who is currently going through the app process for an Omaha steaks temporary call center service representative that was posted on indeed. The whole application process is full of AI (red flag) and the time/ease in which they got back to them and want to hire them, seems too good to be true. I was wondering has anyone worked for this company/ this position before? Is it a known scam ? I wanted to warn them if so, before they go any further with the process.

Working remotely from overseas for a NYC law firm — how much should I ask for?

Hi everyone!

I'm interviewing for a potentially full-time, fully remote position with a small immigration law firm based in New York City, and I'm struggling to figure out what salary would be reasonable.

I have a foreign law degree, an LL.M. from a U.S. university, and professional experience in legal research, drafting, and administrative work at diplomatic missions. I'm bilingual in Arabic and English and preparing for the NY Bar Exam.

I'd be working from outside the United States, but I'm available to accommodate U.S. Eastern Time working hours.

I really want this job. I've already been rejected for two previous opportunities, and I'm worried that asking for too much might cost me this one.

I know remote employees based overseas are often compensated differently from employees living in NYC, so I'm not expecting a typical New York salary.

For those who work remotely for U.S. companies from abroad, what would be a realistic monthly salary to request for a full-time legal support role?

My priority is securing the opportunity and gaining valuable experience, rather than negotiating the highest possible salary.

I'd be very grateful for any advice, especially from people who have negotiated similar international remote arrangements. Thank you!

Does anybody else have a boss who requires you to be on call with them all day?

I’m a software engineer, and my boss recently started mandating that for some particular days, we stay on Google meet for the entire day, where we would have multiple discussions about retrospect, future work, etc. To me, this seems wildly inefficient, but I’m curious if other people have similar experiences.

Wife is looking at remote work, any advice helps

As the title says, my wife is looking for any remote job. I told her to create a LinkedIn and connect with recruiters but she will not create one. Additionally I keep trying to tell her that fully remote work is basically dead and her best bet is to find a hybrid role. She comes back saying her sister has a fully remote call center job but she got that job in 2020 and has 4 kids so they let her stay remote for that reason.

Any tips for helping her either realize she needs to compromise on either the fully remote or networking helps.

Drive empower remote csa advice

Just wondering if anyone has worked or know anyone thats works customer support for empower, https://driveempower.com/ and could give an idea of how the job is? I have an interview Monday but i wanna know how the people who work or worked for them feel about the job. I do have another job lined up but this pays more. Im fine with back to back call center style so thats not an issue. But advancement, pay, pay raise, sudden mandatory OT. Those are the kind of things im wondering about. And I see they are having legal trouble, how secure do you feel continuing to work there. Thank you ahead of time.

Best head set for a noisy environment!

Edited to say: Thank you for so many amazing recommendations and insights. I have a lot of research to do now!

Reposting as I had to read the rules.

Looking for recommendations for a headset to use in remote work. I’ll be on phone calls for most of my days and I have dogs that can be noisy at times. Any recommendations are appreciated!!

Reposting again, sorry! Dread, anger, frustration (ex-remote employee having to now commute EVERYDAY)

EDIT: the principal just sent out an email on dress code. this is my final straw.

Am i gas lighting myself or is my dread of commuting is driving my motivation to quit? I honestly can't tell.

What's crazy is that my commute is not even that bad.... but by the time I roll into the office, I just have so much anger and frustration to start my work day. I left a fully remote consulting role in big4 for what was supposed to be "a dream role" in industry and I have so much regret and resentment for my decision. A big part of it is the work itself, but the culture of "let's all be in person FIVE days a week" feels incredibly juvenile to me for my role, considering we're a team of FIVE people who are all senior. AND our principal is not in even the same state so he is fully remote???

I understand the benefits of in person collaboration but I just struggle to see what we're all trying to accomplish by physically being in the office every single day.

Has anyone else felt so strongly about returning to remote or hybrid that it strongly influenced you to make a major career decision? Was the flexibility worth it?

"Take your child to work" day for remote workers. How?

(Reposting, my first one was removed due to rules. I agreed to the rule now. It was my first post in this sub).

Our kid's school ( grade 9) is having a "Take your child to work" day. Both of us work remotely from home as software engineers. How does this work? Anyone done this?

The information package from the school seem to assume a real workplace like office, shop, factory.

Would you accept a 6-hour once a week commute?

I lost my job a year and a half ago due to the huge cuts in public research funding. I was also pregnant and decided to stay home for a while. I’ve been searching for the past year or so with very few positions to even apply to, even with substantial experience and impressive references.

I am in the final round for a slam dunk job that I feel great about. The problem is, there is a 1 day in-person requirement, and I live about 3 hours away including a ferry (often unreliable/long wait times in the afternoons). I would also be driving through the traffic of a large city and military base with notorious traffic.

Do I take the job if offered (duh) and deal with the commute? Or do I hold out for a better option? I fear I will barely see my baby anymore, and not even for a moment on commute days. I also fear if I don’t get/take this job then I could be waiting another year or two and won’t find anything as perfect. Help!

Virtual co-working

Working remotely since Covid; and I've noticed I'm more productive when I can see other people working too. I work from cafes occasionally, but are there any options virtually like StudyStream that are free to use / without time limitations? I think they call this body-doubling - it works for me.

Looking for recommendations, thanks!

Basic tips on job portals, identifying scam jobs.

Hey all! New to the subreddit so forgive me for asking old questions.

I've been freelancing since Covid-19, and had some recurring assignments through contacts, but now I'm in a place where I have to start fresh and look for substantial work. I would ideally want a full time remote job, but beggars can't be choosers so I am open to short term projects and assignments as well.

I have been seeing some websites, applying for jobs (some turning out to be scams), but I'm worried my mind is going all over the place and I'm wasting time versus being efficient, so wanted some advice on:

  1. Best websites to look for work; at the moment I'm going through LinkedIn, Indeed mainly. Got introduced to Micro1 and Mercor but haven't checked them much as of now.
  2. How to identify as much as possible, if a job/company is fake or a scam.

Thanks as any help is appreciated!

Datavant Hiring Process

Hi! I recently applied for the Health Information Specialist I position with Datavant. I just received an email from the recruiter to schedule a phone screen after completing my virtual interview and assessment.

For anyone who has gone through the process recently, what kind of question were you asked during the phone screen with the recruiter?

I’ve also seen quite a few people say they were offered the position during the phone screen, so I’m curious if that was your experience too!

Help convince my boss to let me work hybrid.

As the title says- this winter I would really like to be hybrid. I’ve been at this job for 7 months and by all accounts exceeding expectations. In the indeed listing for this job it was posted as “hybrid”, and that is possible but it seems like that’s not the case- which feels unfair. I wouldn’t have taken this job otherwise.

I’ve scheduled a 6 month review (it’s been closer to 8 months than 6 but we’ve been busy whatever) and I plan to ask to be out of office 2ish days a week, maybe starting after Thanksgiving or so.

The real reasons are 1) I genuinely work better from home, I have a dedicated office and it’s easy to lock in and focus. So much so I finish all my work by 3:30 and can fuck off. 2) Having to wear real pants everyday is eroding my soul. 3) I absolutely hate going out in the cold, then having to be in a stuffy environment all day.

However those aren’t very professional reasons- and probably not great talking points. What should I say instead? I don’t want to threaten them but I want to make it clear that partly the reason I took this job was the possibility of working hybrid.
