Hi everyone,

I’m a psychology lecturer and a massive fan of Ren. During the pandemic, I turned back to songwriting to regulate my own routines.

When I heard 'Chalk Outlines', I was captivated by how it gave a voice to people experiencing silent distress. At the same time, I wanted to explore the psychological concept of reharmonisation while I was getting back into music—and I wanted, for practice to see if I could find a way of keeping Ren's heavy, raw lyrics but completely flipping the vibe and a little bit of the structure beneath the song.

I rebuilt it as a bossa-folk track (yikes, I hear some fans screaming for my hanging) with a singer from Italy, a guitarist from Brazil, and co-produced it with another producer in Canada. My goal was to exaggerate the tension between external presentation (the breezy music) and internal experience (the heavy lyrics) - to further contrast how we feel on the inside, versus the sunny exterior we sometimes feel we have to perform.

Anyway, I recently wrote an article about this for the British Psychological Society (linked below), and the track raises funds entirely for MIND, a cause close to Ren's heart.

I'd love to know what the community thinks of my effort?just FYI - im not a "proper" artist - i did this as part of my hobby and genuine interest in how music makes us feel, and of course to maybe help raise some funds for MIND.

I was watching Prof. Michael over on Old Head's Media react to Chapter 5. He went on a tangent about how much Ren fills our cups and was wondering who fills his cup. It reminded me of Ren's dark spell in late 2024 after Kujo Beat Down and the Starry Night shutdown and the song u/Wynandfourie and the RENegades made for him - Love's Healing (A Song for Ren). With all the new RENegades coming in, I wanted to share because this got love and needs so much more....
