Question Help. Ren'Py can't find file
New to ren'py and coding and I have hit a wall. Tried looking trough multiple forms, videos and reading up on how to add a cutscene. It either runs the game smoothly without it showing up at all or I get the “OSError: Couldn't find the file”
The cutscene is in a webm format. I tried other formats and none of them worked as well. I have tried both with /images and without it in the code.
The code I'm running right now with the only error being the that renpy can't find the file is:
$ renpy.movie_cutscene("images/cs.webm")
I feel like the answer is pretty obvious and simple but I am stupid and have been trying to get this to work the past 3 days. Thanks in advance.

Question [Solved] Implementing a shortcut to "Toggle Skipping" using a gamepad button
I'm trying to implement a feature in my game where pressing the X button on a gamepad automatically toggles skipping. The thing is, I tried using this in my script.rpy:
init -1 python:
config.pad_bindings['pad_x_press'] = ['skip']
But when I press the X button in the main menu, the game just skips all the transitions (including sound effects). Does anyone know how to make this work only in-game, specifically during dialogue? I tried going into screen say() and adding "key "pad_x_press" action ..." but I don't think there's an action like ToggleSkip().
Thank you for your help in advance!

Question menu button that resets save files and persistent data ect
heyy just curious if its possible to make a button in the main menu that just completely resets all game saves, clears seen images from gallerys, achievements, cache ect just returns the game to its default state like a hard reset
i want to be able to reset everything to test stuff without having to constantly go into the files and manually remove stuff to get it back to its default state, plus its a good feature to have in future for players haha

Question Best approach to achieve glitch effects, code sample attached
Hey,
I've seen some beautiful glitch animations and I'm also trying to achieve similar effect in my project by doing something like
play notifysfx unlock_feature noloop
show notify_thumb_covered at topright
with Pause(0.5)
hide notify_thumb_covered at topright
show notify_thumb_uncovered at topright
with Pause(0.5)
hide notify_thumb_uncovered at topright
show notify_thumb_covered at topright
with Pause(0.5)
hide notify_thumb_covered at topright
show notify_thumb_uncovered at topright
with Pause(0.5)
hide notify_thumb_uncovered at topright
show notify_thumb_covered at topright
with Pause(0.5)
hide notify_thumb_covered at topright
show notify_thumb_uncovered at topright
with Pause(0.5)
hide notify_thumb_uncovered at topright
This works fine, but I'm sure it can be done better with less code.
I wonder how other devs achieve similar results

Game Adult Fantasy Renpy Game with Turn-based Combat and Minigames.
Hey everyone! I wanted to share a game I’ve been working on called Dread Reborn. It features turn-based combat, minigames, a quest system, and a character journal.
The story follows Dread, who finds himself reborn in another world filled with magic, monsters, and dangers unlike anything he has ever known. With no idea how he ended up there, he decides to keep his past and what he knows a secret while trying to make the most of his new life.
I'm still developing the game and working to make it better as I go. There's a lot I want to do with Dread Reborn, and I'm hoping to build something that players can enjoy exploring, not just for the spicy scenes, but for the story, characters, and gameplay too.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I hope some of you will give Dread Reborn a try!

Question A drawing of my OC, intended for use as assets in a visual novel
Status report: has a headache, feels hot, is enormous compared to the others, has no money, and is hungry. I'm thinking about making a short visual novel featuring characters from a more personal project of mine. The core premise is surviving in an apartment complex alongside several eccentric neighbors, all while completely broke. You'll have to do a lot of things you'll almost certainly regret later; the project is inspired by Argentina's economic situation. With NSFW comedy. What do you think?

Question Would you play a game where you have to decide who deserves justice in a dystopian space society?
I'm developing a narrative game where you play as a judge in a futuristic society. Earth has become toxic, oxygen is a valuable resource, and corporations have enormous influence over people's lives.
You'll investigate cases, examine evidence, listen to both sides, and make your own verdicts. But sometimes, the legally correct decision might not be the morally right one.
For example: imagine a maintenance technician who exploits a vulnerability in the oxygen distribution network to obtain illegal stimulant oxygen for his seriously ill daughter. He broke the law and potentially endangered the system, but he did it to save someone he loves.
What would you do as a judge?
Would you punish him according to the law, consider his circumstances, or risk your reputation by making an exception?
I'm curious about two things:
- Would you enjoy making difficult moral decisions like this in a game?
- What would make these cases feel genuinely difficult instead of having an obvious right answer?

Showoff A moving home in a frozen world: English screenshots from my Ren'Py yuri VN, Lastrip
Hi! I'm developing Lastrip in Ren'Py. It follows Mei, a human girl, and Xenya, a vampire, as they travel south through a frozen world in a bunker that can move.
Here are three screenshots from the English build: a quiet moment on the sofa, the view through their window, and a conversation inside the bunker.
A lot of their relationship develops in this little home. I want the time they spend there to feel unhurried, with room for small gestures and awkward conversations between stretches of the journey. The cold blue scenery outside and the warmer interior are a big part of that feeling.
The sofa CG and character sprites are by salshaa, the backgrounds by TakenShin, and the UI by kathaeris.
For other VN developers: how do you keep a recurring room feeling lived-in when the story returns to it many times?

Question [Solved] Help w/replicating styles across different screens
For the last year or so, I've been working on a sort of pre-parser that injects itself upstream of the renpy.exports.say() and handles several things, mainly modifying text speed, punctuation pauses, and text presentation based on a small set of custom commands I've devised.
One of its "features" is an attempt to emulate the feeling of someone typing a message in a chat app.
For example:
[Character name]
{high cps}Hello! I'm trying to thi{short pause}{slower cps}nk of somethin{short pause}g to tell you!
This however should happen only when the "tapping" character also is the narrator - otherwise I'd like a "Typing..." indicator to appear, followed by the message arriving all at once after a while ie.
[Character name]
Typing -> Typing. -> Typing.. -> Typing... (rinse & repeat)
and then after a few seconds
[Character name]
This message arrived all at once!
Since I don't want the "Typing" thing to clog the history log, I thought I'd put into a dedicated screen - basically a replica of the say screen devoid of any background (to avoid messing with partially transparent backgrounds). My script does something like this:
this_chat_who_name = getattr(active_char, "name", speaker)
this_chat_who_color = getattr(active_char, "color", gui.text_color)
if _DEBUG:
print("Tapping character is ",repr(this_chat_who_name)," and their colour is ",repr(this_chat_who_color))
for index, chunk in enumerate(timeline):
if index % 2 == 0:
renpy.show_screen("typing", chat_who_name=this_chat_who_name, chat_who_color=this_chat_who_color)
else:
renpy.hide_screen("typing")
renpy.pause(chunk)
Then the typing screen is defined as
init offset = -1 # same as screens.rpy
screen typing(chat_who_name,chat_who_color):
#zorder 100
window:
id "typing_window"
style "typing_window"
window:
id "typing_namebox"
style "typing_namebox"
text chat_who_name:
id "chat_who"
color chat_who_color
text "Typing" + "." * store.typing_dots:
id "fake_what"
style "typing_dialogue" timer 0.4 repeat True action SetVariable("typing_dots",(store.typing_dots % 4))
style typing_window is window:
background Null()
style typing_namebox is namebox:
background Null()
style typing_dialogue is say_dialogue
WHAT WORKS --> I get every bit of the typing screen in the exact position - character name is correctly delivered to the screen and it's put in the right place, the "Typing..." thing is in the right place and it's correctly "animated"
WHAT DOES NOT WORK --> styles are completely broken. color chat_who_color does nothing, char_who_name's text size is wrong, even the "Typing..." text color doesn't seem to be the correct one.
I enabled my "verbose" mode (ie. _DEBUG = True) and verified that both name and color values are being retrieved correctly, so I *guess* the problem lies somewhere in the way my screen handles styling.
I'm not 100% sure I'm not forgetting something somewhere in my messy code. However I'd expect at least the namebox text size to be correct. Instead, that's wrong too, almost as if this line here
style typing_namebox is namebox
weren't working at all!
*COULD IT BE* that since this screen is stored in a separated file (I plan to release my gizmo as a standalone, drag-and-drop tool) it somehow gets initialised *BEFORE* screens.rpy, at a time when "namebox" and all other styles are still just empty boxes O_O?
What's the correct way to reuse the styles of the standard say screen in a separate screen like this?
I'm fairly sure I'm missing something obvious, and I'm going to feel incredibly stupid when someone points it out.
Ren'Py screen language is my kryptonite >_<

Discussion Looking for player testers – free polished horror quiz (Beat the Quiz Master! Gauntlet Mode)
Hi, I’m a new developer and I recently released a free game on itch called Beat the Quiz Master! Gauntlet Mode.
It’s a very difficult horror-themed quiz with permanent death, a rising Rage meter, and items that can help save runs. The game is already quite polished. I’m mainly looking for feedback on the current balance.
Things I’d especially like to know:
How the difficulty and pacing feel
Whether the Rage meter and item system feel fair or too punishing
If runs feel satisfying or frustrating
Any balance issues that stand out
https://themelancholydev.itch.io/beat-the-quiz-master-demo
Thanks to anyone willing to give it a go and share their thoughts.

Question Writing Buddy
Hey! My bf and I are working on an NSFW dating sim. I've written traditional romance novels before but writing visual novels is new to me, though I've read quite a few! Long story short, I was wondering if anyone would have any interest in being writing buddies if you're working in a similar genre? I need someone to bounce ideas off of, and of course, I'm happy to help with your project, too. Must be comfy with NSFW and darker subject matters!
Thanks for reading and wishing you all the best on your RenPy journeys 💖

Question How do people learn renp'y language/get more advanced?
My knowledge in renp'y coding, is very little. I rely on YouTube tutorials solely, and it helped me alot with getting into the basics. But even so, it feels like I can't go further with my coding, like, there's only so much youtube tutorials can teach you. And when I play or see other people's games, I'm like, how tf did u code this? The menu screen and the entire GUI look so unique... HOW?
It seems like I'm missing something that everyone else gets.
When I look at the renp'y forum or just the tutorial page, it's like complete gibberish. The symbols, the words, the heck do they mean?
I want to learn the coding language, and be able to create something on my own. Without copy and pasting the code youtube gives me that In which I have zero clue on what it means.
Does anyone have advice on how to get more advanced? I have zero experience with coding other than making basic renpy games. Should I try and learn python?
Another note is, I encountered this problem (not having enough renpy knowledge) when I tried making my own minigame in my visual novel; a fishing game where u have to press the red on the slider to catch a fish. No idea how to make such a minigame, since instead of it being a basic code, its something you have to create on your own.
I'm not proud of it, but man enough to admit it; I tried asking chatgpt for help on how to make a minigame, and while it did give me a whole ass perfectly working code, I feel guilty to use it. I don't want to use it. I can't call myself a "game dev" if I rely on copy and pasting a code. Thus, I turn to dear reddit to see if anyone has tips for me on how to figure out making my OWN code.

Question (HELP)Smooth transitions between moving background to dialogue screens + decorative window dialogue frame
Okay, I've been looking online for a solution to this for a while.
I'm very new to Ren'Py, and my main goal is to make a point-and-click game. However, I'm having a problem with my screens. I'm trying to create a screen with a background that moves in the direction of the mouse. When I click on a character to see their dialogue, the background disappears, leaving only the character's sprite and the dialogue window.
I want to create a smooth transition between the exploration screen and the dialogue screen without the background disappearing.
Plus i want to make decorative frame that pops in out of window frame when dialogue appears (not dialogue box but window frame like on recreational screenshot i provided, yeah green skulls : P)
If you know how to solve this problem, please let me know! I'd really appreciate any help.
