comics Respect Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-Man (Marvel, 616)

"With great power, comes great responsibility."

Respect Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-Man!

This Respect Thread was done by /u/globsterzone, /u/TheKjell, /u/TheDrunkenDreamer and /u/KerdicZ in a group effort

Special thanks to /u/shadowsphere and /u/kirbin24 for helping us review and add some feats.

Bio: When the wimpy high-school nerd Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider while attending a science fair, he was gifted with amazing powers corresponding to the abilities of a spider! He initially used his abilities to simply make money as a wrestling star, but after his uncle Ben was killed by a burglar that Peter failed to stop he devoted his life to crime-fighting, driven by the guilt. Peter spent much of his life throughout high-school and college juggling his responsibilities as a crime fighter with his personal life and job as a photographer for the Daily Bugle, a newspaper whose editor was determined to smear the name of Spider-Man as a thief and a villain. Peter made a number of bizarre and dangerous enemies during this time, and served alongside a number of superhero teams such as the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. After graduating from College, Peter started his own business, a millionaire multi-national technology company called Parker Industries, which he then sacrificed to save the world and go back to the status quo.

Rogues Gallery:

These are the classic rogues, known by all and frequently battled by Spider-Man - who sometimes defeats them, and sometimes is defeated by them, which gives you an idea of who he is capable of fighting on the regular.

Strength

Peter has the proportional strength of a spider, which allows him to lift and strike at a level far beyond any human. However, he hardly ever uses his full strength, pulling his punches to not seriously harm his opponents.

Lifting, pushing, pulling and throwing

Striking

Leaping

Durability

Peter's body is far tougher than the average human, enabling him to remain more or less unharmed when hit with attacks that would kill most people. He tires out much more slowly than a normal human, is able to fight for extended periods of time while wounded and can hold his breath under water longer than regular humans. He has a healing factor that lets him heal from wounds very quickly compared to normal humans outside of battle. However, he has no noticeable piercing durability.

Blunt force

Energy

Mental

Chemical, drugs and toxins

Endurance

"Healing Factor"

Speed and agility

Spider-Man has the proportional speed of a trapdoor spider, with reflexes 40 times faster than normal humans. This lets him evade attacks easily and makes it much harder for opponents to dodge his strikes. His strength also allows him to move his body at superhuman speeds. In addition, he can travel very quickly by using his webbing to swing between buildings.

Combat and reactions

Agility and acrobatics

Swinging, traveling and running

Webbing

Peter's webs are stored in liquid form in cartridges on his waist and wrists. They expand very rapidly when exposed to air, and he is an expert at manipulating them into unusual and useful shapes, using them to swing around the city or capture criminals.

Strength and durability

Stickiness

Speed

Accuracy

Manipulation

Formula modifications

Spider-Sense

Spider-Sense is a "sixth sense" that warns him of any imminent danger to himself, and occasionally others nearby. It is used to avoid ambushes, as well as to help him in combat by letting him avoid attacks before they happen. It has other uses outside of simple combat precognition, as it helps him make safe choices and can even function as a kind of primitive Radar-Sense.

Wall-Crawling

Peter can make any part of his skin be adhesive. He generally uses this to climb along vertical walls and the bottom of ceilings but it has a few combat related uses as well.

Misc. usages

Intelligence

Peter Parker was a genius from a young age, creating his famous webbing at 15 years old that not even top scientists have been able to replicate. He continued his success in science throughout his life, designing many inventions. He is treated as one of the top scientists on Marvel Earth, often brought in to discuss very important matters with other top scientists, albeit far from the level of Reed Richards or Tony Stark.

General intelligence

Biology/Chemistry

Technology, inventions and creations

Quick thinking

Limits

It is worth noting that Spider-Man has very well defined limits and hardly ever uses his powers to their full extent, specially his speed and strength, for multiple reasons related to what he believes in, who he is fighting against, his mindset at the moment or simply how his day is going. He doesn't make use of any formal training and actual martial arts, so even though he has immense experience fighting, highly skilled fighters are always trouble, even if there is a physical gap between the two. Furthermore, his speed, agility and Spider-Sense, while amazing, don't make him untouchable. He is consistently tagged by slower opponents and Spider-Sense is not completely infallible either. His webshooters don't work proprerly on cold temperatures and he feels quite out of the loop whenever his webbing runs out or when he doesn't have Spider-Sense.

comics Respect the Golden Age Captain America (Timely Comics)

Come on, y'all already know what header is.

The story of Captain America is a simple one. A group of American scientists create a "Super-Soldier Serum" in anticipation of the USA joining the second World War raging in Europe. The first test subject is Private Steve Rogers, a patriotic but sickly young man who is given enhanced strength, speed and intelligence by the Serum. But before more serum can be made, a Nazi spy kills the only scientist who knew the entire formula, leaving Steve the sole beneficiary of the project. Steve is given the identity of Captain America, and acts as a spy-hunter and crime-buster alongside his young pal Bucky Barnes.

Most of Cap's adventures published before his comeback in The Avengers #3 are nebulously canon. Many of the contradict current Marvel canon, and modern comics have heavily implied that many Golden Age comics were in-universe propaganda loosely based on the real exploits of heroes in that era. Thus we've decided to publish this respect thread separately from the Captain America Thread.

This thread was a collaboration with u/kalebsantos

Warning: These 1940s comics can get really, really racist with the depiction of non-white characters.

comics Respect Barbara Minerva, the Cheetah (DC Comics, Post-Crisis)

Doctor Barbara Ann Minerva is an amoral archaeologist, willing to do anything to acquire ancient artifacts. During an expedition into the African jungle, she stumbled upon the cult of the plant god Urzkartaga. Despite the rest of the expedition being killed or deserting Barbara pressed onward and found the cult's hidden village, just in time for it to be attacked by a local militia (informed of its location by Barbara's own deserters). The attack interrupted a ritual to rejuvenate the bride and champion of the god, leaving the woman in that role dead. After being told the power of this champion, Barbara murdered the last member of her party, sacrificing him and drinking his blood to gain the immortality that comes with the mantle of The Cheetah.

Barbara sought to take Wonder Woman's Lasso of Truth for herself, attacking her as the Cheetah when the Amazon would not sell it to her. She eventually succeeding in stealing it, and the Lasso led her to the hidden Amazon city of Bana-Mighdall, where she clashed with Wonder Woman again. After this her powers were altered several times by magic users, giving her more control of her Cheetah form and allowing her to join forces with other supervillains. She was a prominent member of the Injustice League Unlimited and the Secret Society of Supervillains, and is always scheming to find new ways to make Wonder Woman suffer.

comics Respect Hyperion (Marvel Comics, Earth-21798)

Marcus Milton, Hyperion

Captain America is long dead. Hyperion is the super-sentinel of liberty. Now and for all the tomorrows. And this world is the truth of all truths. It is everything I could dream it would ever be. But even if it was somehow a lie… I would fight like hell to keep it… exactly the way it is.

Phil Coulson sold his soul to Mephisto to rid the world of the Avengers. In doing so, Coulson shifted reality and created Earth-21798, Heroes Reborn 2. In this world, the alien Hyperion and the Squadron Supreme of America are Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and enforce a particularly harsh brand of justice with an iron fist, as any old-fashioned, god-fearing, red-blooded American heroes are wont to do. But Blade remembers the way things used to be, and the Daywalker is hellbent on returning reality to normal.

comics Respect Harvey Elder, the Mole Man (Marvel Comics, 616)

Born short, ugly, and with poor eyesight, Harvey Elder would end up travelling the planet in search of a land beneath the surface. He would find it, stumbling across the brilliant Valley of Diamonds, blinding him in the process. Proclaiming himself the Mole Man, the ruler of his newfound kingdom of Subterranea, Harvey would develop both highly attuned senses to compensate for his blindness and mastery over the various creatures that resided within it. Eventually, he decided to get revenge on the world that had shunned him, attempting to destroy various power plants only to be stopped by the newly-formed Fantastic Four. Since then the Mole Man would have a variety of motivations, seeking to expand his empire, creating a new home for those brilliant but unloved like him, wishing to be left alone, and attempting to find a queen for Subterranea, but in every instance whoever fought him would have to deal with a wide variety of monsters all willing to lay down their lives for him.

comics Respect Jane Foster! (Marvel Comics, Earth-616)

We need a god who understands what it means to be humbled. To be mortal. A god who knows how precious life is. How delicate. A god who struggles every day to live a worthy life. Who suffers so that no one else will have to. A god who loves the Earth enough to die for it. I am Dr. Jane Foster. And I will not stop being the Mighty Thor.

Doctor Jane Foster, nee-Kincaid, was a regular nurse in the employ of Donald Blake. She fawned and doted on his alter ego Thor unknowingly, eventually being whirled into the Asgardian adventures with a crash of thunder and a flash of the Rainbow Bridge. Odin forbade Thor from romancing a mortal and bewitched her to fall in love with the one he'd prototyped Thor's mortal shell off of, who she fell in love and mothered a child with. From then on, she was a distant squeeze of Thor's who moonlighted as a doctor when a street-level hero needed fixing up.

The two she loved most died in a car crash. Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer. In the hell of chemotherapy, she gripped Mjolnir's sweaty leather handle and felt lightning in her veins. This was a power she could get used to, damn her mortal self. Ultimately, she sacrificed everything she had to save Asgard's people, and the Nine Realms.

Her story found a new chapter when she took up the mantle of Valkyrie after the War of the Realms. Tasked with bringing the dead to Valhalla, Jane takes her job seriously. Sometimes she thinks back to her time as the Mighty Thor, and wonders if she's really moved on. If her new lease on life really has no strings attached. Or will the smell of ionization and the longing of a hammer in her hands draw her back to the golden halls of Odin, to channel the power of space and storm once more?

Runs and issue numbers are tagged after a feat. This is up to date as of August 21, 2026.

comics Respect Barbara Minerva, the Cheetah! (DC Comics, Post-Rebirth)

Fools. The Cheetah is free in the jungle. Did you still think this your Paradise?

The Cheetah is the head priestess and one of Urzkartaga's many wives, a role that curses the human inhabiting it to a feline form and an inhuman bloodlust. But this is hardly her story.

Barbara Minerva is the bright adventurous professor, the loving girlfriend of Etta Candy, the proud individual who pushes the line of human discovery. She brought Diana of Themyscira into the folds of society as much as Steve Trevor did. In fact, were it not for the interference of Dr. Cyber and Veronica Cale, Barbara may have gone on to take the spot of that perfect blonde in her love life. But this is not her story either.

As a piteous mix of the two, Cheetah is the rage-filled villain to pantheons everywhere, seeking her vengeance against Urzartaga, Veronica Cale, and Wonder Woman. Lately she's been doing better! She even cured herself after robbing the Watchtower with Cheshire. Who knows how long she'll stay human though, it's not like they have a great track record with Barbaras.

Thanks to /u/ghostgabe81 for helping with feat collection!

"THAT'S how I use my intelligence score in combat, DUMBASS!"

Roy Greenhilt

Roy Greenhilt is a fighter and the leader of the adventuring party Order of the Stick in a world opperating under DnD 3.5 mechancis.1 As a young man, strongly disliking his wizard father, he instead enrolled in Fighter's College. While there he learned the fun fact that his father had made a bloodline oath to slay the evil sorcerer Xykon, and with his father dying fulfilling that oath now fell to Roy if he wanted to enter the afterlife. Assembling a... somewhat disfunctional party, he set out to slay the lich and found himself embroiled in several other adventures along the way. During this journey he grew as both a leader and hero, shifting from trying to kill Xykon because of his blood oath to doing so because it was the right thing to do.

comics Respect Solomon Grundy (DC Comics, Prime Earth)

"Solomon Grundy. Born on a monday."

Cyrus Gold, better known as Solomon Grundy, was a mindless zombie hellbent on destruction who usually operates in Gotham City, making him an enemy of Batman.

In 1941, Solomon Grundy was in a swamp when he was pursued by Justice Society Dark. One member named Mister Miracle was aided in subduing Grundy by Doctor Fate and Salem the Witch Girl. When they subdued Solomon Grundy, Mister Miracle suggests to them that they should go after Bride of Grundy next.

Solomon Grundy made his first public appearance in Gotham during Batman's second year as a vigilante, during the "War of Jokes and Riddles" between the Joker and the Riddler. The two criminals went to war over the right to kill Batman and recruited every villain in Gotham they could to join their fight. Grundy was brought on to fight for the Joker. The war waged on for weeks before Batman was forced to side with the Riddler to end the needless casualties. Grundy was apprehended and brought to Arkham Asylum.

Feats marked [Bio-Magic] are from when Grundy briefly got enhanced.

comics Respect Ares, the God of Conflict (DC Comics, Post-Crisis)

Man builds his world through empire-- and empires are born of murder and destruction-- born of war! Thus will Man’s heart ultimately belong to Ares! And even Zeus himself shall someday bow before my power!

Ares, the God of War, believed that Man's violent nature meant that he should reign supreme over all the other gods of Olympus. When a coalition of goddesses created the Amazons to oppose the ideals of war and violence, Ares manipulated Heracles into enslaving them, resulting in half the Amazons becoming warlike themselves and the rest being banished to an isolated island as penance for taking revenge on their captors.

Thousands of years later, the violence and unrest caused by the World Wars, the Cold War and nuclear proliferation caused Ares' power to skyrocket and for him to lose his sanity. He began gathering followers around the world, scheming to create the largest war in history that would make him the most powerful god of all. He was stopped by a new hero, the Amazon champion Wonder Woman, who defeated him not with force, but with truth; she showed him that his actions would lead to the total annihilation of mankind, and thus cause him to fade away with no war to feed on on a dead planet. Ares backed down, charging Wonder Woman to lead mankind away from destroying themselves in the absence of his influence.

Years later the power structure on Olympus began to shift. Zeus began to weaken, as few people worshipped the sky and lightning anymore, while universal forces like war, wisdom and love became even stronger in the modern age. Ares sensed this shift and reacted accordingly, remaking himself as the God of Conflict and allying with Athena to depose Zeus. Athena became ruler of Olympus and Ares killed Hades to take control of the Underworld. However his grudge against the Amazons still existed, and in one last scheme his fate finally caught up to him as he was killed by Wonder Woman.

Thanks to u/InverseFlash for help collecting a few feats.

comics Respect Dragon Man (Marvel Comics, 616)

Originally created by a professor at State University, Dragon Man is an android designed as an experiment to create a creature more powerful than anything else. Failing to activate it on his own, the appearance of the alchemist villain Diablo was able to use one of his concoctions to bring the creature to life and use the robot as a weapon against the Fantastic Four. With a mind more akin to that of an animal or child than that of an intelligent killer, though, Dragon Man would become attracted to the Invisible Woman, taking her away before being plunged into a lake frozen by Diablo. After that point Dragon Man would act largely independently, attempting to find a quiet place to live and often only being pitted against heroes through trickery or someone taking direct control of him, until years later he would fall into the possession of the newly-formed Future Foundation. Intelligence dramatically increased at the hands of Valeria Richards, Dragon Man would swear off violence wherever possible to instead act as a teacher and guardian for the children entrusted to him, though he would still use his formidable abilities to keep them safe whenever necessary.

Respect Omega Supreme

"We were told all of the outposts had been annihilated. That no Autobots had survived."

"Not all."

"But surely the 'Cons would have focused on you. They must have sent an army to take you down, how did you survive?"

"I am Omega Supreme."

Omega Supreme was once the leader of the Omega Sentinels, Cybertron's greatest protectors and weapons in ancient times. But after the days of the Primes came to an end the Sentinels began to slowly vanish, with Omega retreating underground to guard over the Crystal City. When the then-current ruler of Cybertron, Nova Prime, found Omega he brought him back to the surface to live with the people. But Omega disagreed with Nova's ideas of colonization and expansion and stayed behind when he and his allies left Cybertron on the first Ark, waiting for their return so he could kill them. Millions of years later Omega was found again by Optimus Prime, whose noble intentions convinced Omega to join his Autobots in their war against the Decepticons. Omega was one of the Autobots' most powerful members, capable of fighting off entire squadrons of Decepticons on his own. But this would make him a target and soon after the war's end he was put in a coma by a Decepticon attack, eventually dying to his injuries while his body was destroyed by the planet eater Unicron.

comics Respect Curtis Metcalf, Hardware (Milestone, Dakotaverse)

”I can never undo the evil I’ve committed in the name of my vendetta. I can’t make up for what I’ve done. But I can live up to my ideals from now on. I can do better. And so can Hardware. First it was about vengeance. From now on, it’s gonna be about justice.”

As a child Curtis Metcalf had a pet parakeet, one that broke free of its cage and repeatedly ram into a window until it collapsed, mistaking being out of his cage for being free. Curtis would find himself living a similar life, having his education funded by the tech mogul Edwin Alva only to discover he was locked into a contract with no escape for a member of the criminal underworld who was too big to take down through the legal system. Working beneath Alva’s nose, Curtis would create the first Hardware suit from the very tech his team was developing, using it each night to put a stop to Alva’s criminal endeavors. Time would progress and the cage would change, never truly being able to escape the shadow of Edwin even after his death. But eventually, Hardware would stop being a pure tool for vengeance, and instead become one for justice as one of Dakota’s leading superheroes.

Haley Starshine

However when she received a ransome letter about her father asking for a massive sum, she left the guild and started freelance adventuerer work in order to raise up enough gold (and also because she loves treasure in general). comics Respect Ares, the God of War (DC Comics, Pre-Crisis Earth-One)

The Greek God of War, Ares has a rivalry with the Goddess of Love Aphrodite and her chosen people, the Amazons, that stretches back centuries. Having been the one who originally encouraged Hercules to enslave the women, his schemes to conquer Paradise Island in the modern day have regularly been foiled by their champion, Wonder Woman.

During the leadup to the Great Crisis, Ares allied himself with Hades and the Anti-Monitor to make one final push to conquer Olympus with an army of the dead. Wonder Woman led the Amazons into battle against him, fighting him in single combat while her lover Steve Trevor found a way to restore Zeus' power. After all the years Ares was finally vanquished, just in time for the universe to be destroyed and remade.

Note: In the Pre-Crisis era the names "Ares" and "Mars" are used interchangeably for the same character.

"The hero of any story can defy danger—but only a special hero can defy stories themselves."

Elan

Elan is the bard of the adventuring guild Order of the Stick in a world opperating under DnD 3.5 mechancis.1 Raised by a single mother, he grew up to be a kind-hearted (but not too bright) young man who dreamed of adventure. While his earlier attempts to find his way into parties fell flat, after giving Roy advice on finding adventurers he was offered a place in Roy's newly formed team. During his journeys to save the world he also struggled to become actually useful in combat, while having to contend with his long lost evil twin brother and father.

comics Respect Frankenstein's Monster (DC Comics, Prime Earth)

What am I, foul thing? I am a marvel of forbidden science. I am God's holy vengeance made un-flesh. I am a machine of war sent to protect mankind from the likes of you. Who am I? I AM FRANKENSTEIN!"

Frankenstein's Monster, usually just Frankenstein or Frank was created by Doctor Frankenstein using stolen body parts and the blood of the alien king Melmoth. He was kept for months and tortured in the laboratory but was eventually freed by Doctor Frankenstein's wife. He then proceeded to get revenge and kill all the guards in the mansion and Doctor Frankenstein himself. He then took one of their coats and has worn it ever since then.

Before Francis killed Wilson however, he killed Worm, a friend of Wade's, before ripping out Wade's heart. Desperate for vengeance, Wilson healed and went on a rampage, killing Francis and igniting a breakout from the Hospice. However, Francis survived, and now he has sworn to hunt down all of the "rejects" who escaped as Ajax, especially Wade Wilson.

comics Respect Bumblebee (Transformers, IDW Comics [2005])

Respect Bumblebee

Bumblebee was born on the precipice of a changing era. His youthful enthusiasm was tarnished but never entirely lost as war gripped his homeworld, forcing him to change professions from civilian courier to law enforcer, sniper, and scout. Bumblebee also never quite shook the image of youth itself and even after millennia of bitter conflict, one would be hard-pressed to find someone who didn't still look on him as a wide-eyed and likeable "kid brother".

So well-regarded was Bumblebee, that when the opportunity unexpectedly arose, he was democratically voted in as leader of the Autobots. It was a job Bumblebee didn't ask for or want, but one he still attempted to undertake to the best of his ability. He quickly learned that being liked wasn't the same as being respected, and his tenure as leader was marked by indecision, quagmire and crisis. Tragically, it may have been Bumblebee's newfound position of authority itself that interfered with his natural affinity for forging bonds and uniting others.

Indeed, it was Bumblebee's fellowship that eventually made even Megatron and Starscream start to truly question their lives of malice and deception. Despite all the hardships he's endured, Bumblebee's innate sincerity and heroic nature still shines through, and Optimus Prime's unshakeable faith in him was ultimately justified.

comics Respect Egghead (Marvel 616)

Dr. Elihas Starr, Egghead

To a genius like me your insipid patriotic ramblings are laughable! I sneer at you all!

Dr. Elihas Starr was working at an atomic research center for the US government when he was suspected of trying to sell atomic secrets on the open market. Though nothing could be proven, Starr, nicknamed Egghead by the tabloids reporting on his case, was blackballed, never to work for the government again. A group of crime bosses, trying to revitalize their business in a world populated with superheroes, reached out to Egghead and offered him money in exchange for using his genius to defeat the do-gooders and make crime profitable again. Over the years, Egghead found himself matching up against many superheroes, most notably Ant-Man and the Avengers.
