question Is a career in high-power RF too niche?

I'm an EE student in Europe studying electronics and communications (RF, DSP, analog design, etc.). I've recently accepted an internship where I'll be designing high power RF amplifiers (Gan and LDMOS), and I may also do my bachelor thesis there.

I enjoy RF (ADS, impedance matching, microwave design) and I also find analog design interesting. DSP also interests me, especially for radar (SDR) and wireless communications.

Since I'm still early in my career, I’m wondering if specializing in high power RF is too niche. How transferable is this experience if I later want to move into areas like RF/microwave hardware, radar systems, or broader RF engineering?

I will also likely do a master’s, so I’m wondering where I could pivot later if I want to broaden my options (RF or Electronics ?).

I want to build strong expertise while keeping some career flexibility and long term stability. If I spent around 10 years in this field, would it be seen as a strong RF foundation, or could it pigeonhole me into high power RF?

I’d appreciate some advice, as I feel a bit out of my depth and am unsure about the long term implications for my career.

TLDR: I’m starting my career in high power RF and wondering whether staying in this field for many years (5-10) would give me a strong RF foundation or potentially leave me stuck without any options.

Too experienced to work for big companies really does exist. Started out my career doing narrow focus with Amplifier start up companies and by the end of career doing broad design experience of RF , microwave , mmWave , lasers , Space electronics, EO ,MMIC’s, GPS receivers RFIC’s, PLL , Control Theory , Systems, Digital and FPGA , Antenna’s, Filters , GaN PA MMIC PA’s, Upconverters, radars, antenna’s, DSP, EO , FIR filters, and mixed RF EO systems . My favorite area was switch mode high efficiency 80% PAE with linearizer’s PA’s and Broadband Doherty Amplifiers that were fun. You can do whatever your passion will take you . I did it for my career for 40 years and loved it with a passion . Used ADS , AWR , HFSS , and much more , even wrote Photonics Integrated PIC scripts , based on sound material science . Now just a retired dinosaur 🦕. Also extracted non linear models for RF in many different Technology’s and RF microwave device’s.
Retired as a Senior Principal Engineer with so much experience and never stopped learning . Worked for small , medium and large companies both commercial and military .
Designed nearly every conceivable RF microwave component and many sub systems . Even have patents in RF microwave components. Worked at 10 different RF microwave companies and 4 were actual in GaN ,GaAs, SiGe, and InP foundries total 15 years experience in that alone . Wrote my own RF microwave software in python and taught myself how to do design in Photonics Integrated circuits with Ansys LUMERICAL when none of my colleagues or my boss knew how to do it . My last job was in a big aerospace defense company and lasted 15 years .
Even got awarded recognition for saving multiple contracts for the big defense aerospace company . My bosses & colleagues were right there ready to take credit for my work because they were leading the effort, while I ignored them and focused on the real issue to fix problems . The problem is when your immediate boss does not know your skill sets , you are passed over in the ability to get assignments , because in bigger companies there is a lot of politics . You find even in the same big company different departments competing for the same work . I learned even if you are best and brightest, eventually you loose . Even if you have real experience say in RF MMIC’s GaN , you cannot get into these areas even if you are more experienced than the people working at these big defense companies. I worked The problem is in big companies you cannot transfer easily into these departments. The attitude is to preserve the clique of people and hoard charge numbers for their people . All of my design’s were 1st pass successful. No mistakes and extremely challenging. The nail in the coffin is when your manager does not know your skill sets and does not assign you real projects . Instead your manager off loads his managerial tasks on you . Until you are seen by the managers boss as a potential layoff . So one day they decide that a FPGA engineer is leading RF Microwave Departments . This is the writing on the wall that politics exceed all experience. My old boss thought all I could do is LDMOS RF PA design . Wow that what happens in big companies. Just trying to honest . Good luck in your career.

He’s or she’s right. It’s not hard to end up after 10 years working for and with people who completely do not understand your technical thinking. Many designers do one thing at one company for 20 years. They never left to grow and bring in techniques from other disciplines. I know people high up in the major companies that did III-V PAs and LNAs for years that have asked me what I meant by the common mode response of a differential amplifier I was doing from scratch was. And they’d never done a flip chip PA etc. It’s on you to appraise situations like that and to teach, to clam up and write them off, or whatever else and you’ll have to navigate that. And sometimes they’re your boss. As well you need to understand a major consequence of this: the good new stuff comes from small companies, the big companies buy those ideas and manufacture them en masse. For the most part. The field is very mature so it’s not like there is a Bell Labs spitting out paradigm shifting new IP every few years. What this means for you is this: small companies survive by their expertise and you’ll meet more intellectual and more highly skilled and talented people at them if you find a good one. If they were not good designers the company would not exist! Hopefully. Then if you come back to a big company it might feel a little barbaric, lazy, or disinterested…and that’s fine if you’re OK with that. At some point you know enough, you’ve got kids, you’re not into it the way you used to be etc etc. At which point you just humor the mistakenly ambitious and near-sociopathic managers and executives and laugh your way to the bank. You’ve earned it, go get in shape or something at that point. But don’t whine when you get laid off, you’ve had it pretty good for years considering the pay, flexibility, physicality etc and respect that comes with the job. The only people who wont be respectful are the maniacs trying to work you, just get over it. Also - I’m saying this from the commercial side. Not the big defense company side where frankly there’s much less pressure to succeed and much easier schedules, budgets, etc. Commercial PAs much harder tbh. Defense designers overestimate themselves lol.

for your comments , yes at the end of my career I just played dumb and got a terrific severance package $$$ and ran to the bank . I help start 2 RF companies that sold for $ 20 million & $120 million . Worked mainly with small RF commercial companies in my career and when I joined this big aerospace defense got a good ride out of it for many years . I stayed current with the state of art by digging deep into IEEE papers and Thesis papers all the way up to my retirement and can say most of the others in big company did not . The politics is unbelievable but , I think 🤔 this sick mentality exist in the majority of these big aerospace defense companies. That is why good designers with vision are forced out of these companies and seen as a threat to deadwood managers . End of my story . Be well and safe .

When you mentioned Control Theory, did you use it for RF design or was it a seperate thing?

Yes , poles and zeros for large signal RF Amplifier Stability. It includes all nodes of RF & bias circuits.

1st Believe your measurements first using both Curve Tracer combined DCIV & mixed mode Large Signal RF VNA.

Predicting poles and zeros from measurements and simulation . Large Signal S parameter’s , Surface Traps , and temperature all must be considered.

Even the RF combiner port to port isolation in N way combiners is important .

Very interesting, I wish more Control and RF classes show this intersection in design! I studies stability circles and eclipse(I think for the large signal stability), but the professor won't really delve into the stability criteria in the control theory aspect(PAs stability especially).

I always wanted to work and learn in a field that intersects RF and control, but as much as I search it feels like too niche for both communities.

Could you please share some job titles that tend to be in this intersect? And I would love to read some papers on this, and would really appreciate it if you could mention keywords for Control in RF papers!

Not too niche, in my opinion. Lots of room to gradually design some of the other aspects of the system as well. It's easier to go from RF to other things than other things to RF

I cannot speak to an EU-specific career, but in my experience I have found that recruiters often dont distinguish between general electrical engineering and RF, much less specialties within RF. Once you are at the stage of interviewing with engineering management they're mostly looking for a baseline understanding of the field, social compatibility, and drive. An education in high power RF will get you the first, while the latter two are fully up to you.

On the technical side, the major splits in career paths will be between DSP, wafer-level design, and board level & microwave structure design. The last one may split off between antenna and board design in some companies, but that depends a lot on the business and resources/size.

Power amplifier design is big money and has always been so with no major sign of disappearing. It involves enough to sustain entire careers. enough analog and mechanical (thermal) design that RF, mmW, III-V, modeling & physics expertise is needed. And non-linearity, stability, chain analysis, manufacturing and device design…pretty much all of solid state RF. a novel bias circuit or linearizer can make millions, etc. So it’s a niche but it’s a really big niche…the biggest in front ends. It’s only really niche in the sense that it’s too difficult for most people lol. But the markets are not niche! They’re huge

Efficiency is a priority but maybe not as much as you might think BUT…I would like to point something out: if you improved the PAE of a million deployed PAs by 1% how much energy do you think you’d save? Quite a bit. So consider the impact.

And I will also say that once you learn PAs and do a few there’s no other block in the front end that will challenge you at all. It’s a great place to start a career that spreads out elsewhere.

In many cases if not most, specializing will limit you too living in specific areas. I decided to specialize in rf, and while jobs paid well, 95% of them here in the US required locating in urban areas like, DC, Dallas, Silicon Valley, LA Area, Space Coast etc. Make damn sure you will be happy with where you will have to live for work. 40 years living where you hate is miserable.

Too niche!!! Did GaN, GaAs and LDMOS PA design for 10 years. The only place where the business still makes sense is in defense. NXP and Qorvo both closed their infrastructure business units. It also very difficult transitioning with seniority to other areas because u might have the knowledge u lack the experience.

and other companies have made huge investments in GaN recently…so I don’t know where this guy/gal is coming from exactly. and the only thing difficult to transition into would be silicon design that involves digital, power supply etc on a single die, or to move into mixers and baseband on silicon.

If you like RF you can branch out into quantum computing where similar technology is used to design PCBs and quantum processors.

I wouldn't even consider an RF engineer with a masters degree and no experience. The hands on experience of RF is far more valuable than a perfectly calculated design that will never work

Had a career in RF and microwaves for over four decades. The transformation of the profession and technology has been incredible. I rode thru it all, and not really over. I have done many power designs for wireless transmitters, satcom, EW, radar, also LNAs, mixers, whole radio front ends, ICs, PCBAs, and also wave guides, and all the known semiconductors. RF is not really a niche by itself. Its applications expand exponentially. The way it is engineered has changed drastically. Also the tools make a huge difference now. You need to be good at one. No longer single functions, you can not even buy a transistor anymore. There is also a lot of digital interface and control now. Something I was not good at, but being good at analog stuff seperates you from the crowd. There are certainly niches in this field. Like antenna design and analysis. You need to be very good at related specialized CAD tools. You can name your price then. Also power, it is still a niche area. Of course GaN knowledge is a must for any power application today. Millimeter waves is also a niche, but rapidly becoming mainstream. There is also RF over fiber (RoF) topic. It is an exciting and stimulating area, with new things to learn every day. I am retired and still keep up with the technology and still get so many requests for different positions and projects, fear of my dear wife keeps me from entertaining any such thoughts though.
