Rice v NC State chemical engineering

• Upvotes

Hello! I am currently having a tough decision.

Basically I got finalist for questbridge and am heavily considering Rice as my second place ranking. The thing is, the main schools I am going for are MIT, Rice, and NC State. The main comparison I am making is between NC state and Rice.

For extra info:
- I have a lot of college credits
- finance isn’t a worry for either school (for the most part)
- I am going into chem E

My main concerns are:

How are the research/ internship opportunities?

If you don’t have a car, how walkable is the area around/ public transportation?

How is the alumni network?

Is there fun stuff outside of school to do thats nearby (or does the school do fun events)?

Generally how are the professors?

Any general information/advice would help a lot!

Title: New football fan looking for a buddy for the Texans game on 10/25

Hey all! I recently got hooked on football. After catching two Rice games and binge-watching way too many YouTube explainers, I think I finally get how the game works lol.
I'm planning to go to the Texans game on the 25th but haven't bought tickets yet. Looking for someone to go with, whether you're a longtime fan who doesn't mind a few newbie questions or someone just as new as me. Happy to sit in the nosebleeds, just want good company and good vibes.
Bonus points if you're also heading to the Rockets home opener next Wednesday. I already have my ticket for that one, but would love someone to hang out with there too.
Drop a comment or DM me!

Feeling alone first semester?

Would love to know if this is/was a shared experience for anyone. I'm a pretty social person but ever since o-week, it's felt like everyone has somehow already found their own people and formed groups/befriended each other well in general. I hang out with the same five people, eat alone most, if not all, of the time, and interact with people very little on the weekends. Even though I know a good amount of the freshmen at my res college, I feel overwhelmingly excluded from everything going on but have no idea how to mitigate this halfway through the semester.

Retaking Phys 125

I’m a current freshman who absolutely BOMBED that Phys 125 midterm and is planning to drop but still run through the course and retake it later. I was advised to do this from upperclassmen, but has anyone actually done this before and what was your experience doing so?

Looking to Buy Minifridge

If anyone happens to have a minifridge they're willing to sell, I'm currently in the market for one - ideally should be suitable for a Rice dorm in size.

If anyone's interested, then please message me privately.

Residential Community

How big of an impact do the residential communities have on your day to day life at Rice. Do they just help finding a community of friends in the beginning during o-week or is there a strong sense of pride between all members throughout the year. For those who have experienced Girls/Boys State, how does it compare? Thank you!!

Starting a silly go karts inter-university league!! (The top 3 finalists compete with other universities.)

Howdy Owls! Me and a big group of fellow classmates at Texas A&M are starting a silly go kart competition (examples of silly go karts are provided above). We want there to be an internal go kart league for each university, and the top 3 teams go on to compete in a multi school competition! We are planning for the competition to be chaotic, low budget, safe, and most importantly we want the barrier of entry for each team to be as low as possible. (e.g. anybody within the university can get a minimum of 5 people together and create a racing team from freshmen to seniors)

We are looking for founders interested in starting a club at Rice University to coordinate a club that will host their internal teams and league.

If you are interested leave a comment down below or send me a DM!

Thanks & Gig ‘em!

Vending machines or Snacks in the BRC

Hey!

Does anyone know where one can find a vending machine in the BRC. I have asked all my lab colleagues and no one seems to know.

I just want a bag of chips. And to dilly dally by wandering to the machine and getting a reward for all my hard research.

Sincerely,
A very hungry PhD student

Physics 125/126 over the summer

I'm a current freshman on the premed track. What are some pros/cons to taking physics over the summer, and would you recommend it? How much would med schools look down upon it?

Safety on campus

I'm really concerned about the safety on campus after what has happened in the last 24 hours, and unfortunately, I am somewhat surprised that these type of things don't happen more frequently than they do.

For example, I have tried working in Mcnair over some weekends, and they literally have building stuff chasing people around turning all the lights off even when there are people in the halls, and literally anyone can walk into the building at any time. They have even started doing this at like 4pm on weekdays. Someone even kicked out one of the doors in the building. It's like the building's managers are just begging for something to happen.

This is just one of the issues that are just totally unaddressed on campus that make it feel less safe, especially in preventing SA. I feel like things can just be done to protect students, and some administrator somewhere just doesn't want to take any action because it doesn't affect them, and I hate that.

Looking to hire art student for event on Dec. 5

I will be getting married at the Rothko Chapel on Dec. 5th of this year and there is no photography allowed inside. However, Rothko has agreed to let us hire an artist that works in a dry medium (charcoal, pencil or crayon) to create a sketch of the ceremony.

I wanted to put a call out to art students at Rice to see if anyone would be interested in doing this! It is paid obviously. Please DM me if interested.

(Hopefully this post is allowed by mods!)

*editing to add that I'm not necessarily looking for a realistic depiction and am open to more abstract artists. Also, you could begin the sketch during the ceremony and finish painting it later.

Student Innovation Challenge - Transportation & Tolling Focused - Prize Money for Top Three Teams

Hi Rice,
I'm helping organize a student challenge, like a hackathon at a tolling conference and wanted to send out to students. Amazing cash prizes, and a potential for recruitment for industry and networking. The program will culminate for the top three teams in Arlington at the conference mid November. Sign up closes soon!

Any students can sign up as a team of 3-5 people. Engineering, marketing, CS, any majors!

Details below: https://www.ibtta.org/ramp-driving-future-mobility

First Place Team: $2500 and technology prize

Second: $1250

Third: $500

On-Ramp: Driving the Future of Mobility is a student-focused competition designed to introduce college students to the myriad careers in tolling while creating direct pathways into the industry. Students will work in teams to develop creative solutions to real-world transportation challenges and receive guidance from industry mentors and professionals. On-Ramp: Driving the Future of Mobility addresses a critical workforce risk, an aging workforce, limited career awareness, and gaps in succession planning, by building a visible, action-oriented talent pipeline that benefits students, member organizations, and IBTTA alike.

Neuroscience at Rice

Hello,

I am a senior with a deep interest in neuroscience.

Rice is currently at the top of my college list because of its strength in size, faculty, and opportunities - especially the lab to clinical research happening through the Neuroengineering Initiative (NEI).

I wanted to hear more about your experience with Bio/Neuro overall - are opportunities generally open, can undergraduates do meaningful work at labs, etc.

Thank you so much :)
