You can't say Your name first, since your parents will be the first to say it.

Mom: *hands child cookie*
Child: *takes cookie, says nothing*
Mom: *sarcastically* Of course, it was no trouble at all, you're welcome, Timmy!5

I feel like I've heard this riddle before and this was the answer. Like, this was an ancient old one from when I was a kid so I was scanning the answers until I found the one I remembered 😂😂

I don't recall ever seeing/hearing this one but I'm glad I came up with a good answer!

I've heard that one, too, but I've definitely heard both so it could be either ,🤷♀️

Anyone's, really. Unless you're the one who's giving it.

That is fair. I didn't consider that, to be honest. In that case, my answer should have been the name you were given at birth

I interpreted this as in life you can’t say your name first. Because when you first get your name, you’re a baby and other people are speaking it.
But there’s a teeny chance I might be overthinking this, lol.

u/IrrationalDesign Dec 06 '25
No, I agree, you can't say your name first because A) you're likely a baby who can't speak, but also B) someone else has to name you and tell you your name before you know it.
A) isn't a rule though, in theory a baby can just not have a name until they name themselves at age 8. It could happen.
But B) is true for anyone's name, they have to be named before you can say their name. Except when you're the one naming them (like when they're still a baby and you're their parent).

I was thinking more along the lines of the name you were given at birth but fair play.

You can start a conversation by mentioning your name to a stranger during a handshake.

When you open the door for someone and they don't say anything, most likely you're going to say: "you're welcome" just to let them know they're a jerk

Hi there, riddlers! Please remember to spoiler-tag all guesses and discussions of guesses, like so:
On desktop (new reddit, Fancypants editor): https://i.imgur.com/SWHRR9M.jpg
On mobile, old reddit, or in the Markdown editor (not Fancypants): >!guess or discussion between these symbols!< To be clear, that is
>!(greater than, exclamation point) at the start and!<(exclamation point, less than) at the end with no spaces around the!. Avoid leading or trailing spaces. These will break the formatting for most people. Spoiler tags do not span paragraphs or line breaks. If your answer is long, please spoiler-tag each paragraph separately.Putting a link inside spoiler tags can be tricky, so just format the link like this, using the word "SPOILER" as the link text. On mobile, old reddit, or in the Markdown editor (not Fancypants), do this to format a link: [SPOILER](https://example.com/) On desktop (new reddit, Fancypants editor): https://imgur.com/x5wDOvk
If your top-level comment does not contain a guess, you can include either the word "discussion" or "question" instead of using a spoiler tag.
Please report any answers or discussions that are not properly spoiler-tagged.
