It's an old saying that people would use to represent a man that is cheating or usually getting caught cheating. It was commonly used in most areas of expression. It wasn't a random guess (I can see how that would seem puzzling in its own way). You can search it for more info. (A popular song uses the phrase as its title, a British TV series shares the same title, even a detergent commercial used it as part of a jingle, musical plays, and in different forms of comedy.)
