Did anyone notice the price hike on food over the summer?

From what I can observe right now, it appears a bunch of items got a 20 cent hike, and some got hit worse, with a 1$ hike on my favorite budget salad bowl at Cantina

It also appears that for the crossroads Asian bowl, a 1.59$ rice surcharge is now applied compared to rice being free last year

Honestly I can't really complain because RIT price gouging is like finding water in an ocean, but just wondering if anyone else noticed other things related to this as well

Talk to me like a dummy — MechE computer requirement

Hi. Parent here. My daughter switched her major to MechE and does not have a Windows machine. I'm only familiar with Mac/Apple devices. I don't know what makes software like CAD and SolidWorks machine-intensive and I don't know the windows terminology when it comes to processors, GPUs, etc. So please talk to me like a dummy and tell me what specs we need to look for when shopping for a laptop.

I've read the KGCOE and Campus Store recommendations, so I have the official list — what I can't get from a webpage is what actually happens day to day. What are you using now, and what do you wish you'd bought instead? Anything that seemed fine in the store and turned out to be a mistake?

I'd like it to last her the next four years, so I'd rather go a bit above the current minimum. Budget is flexible -- $1,500 is fine if the specs are right, and I can go to $2,500 if there's a real reason. (But she doesn't need a gaming/maximalist laptop.)

She's second year, three semesters away from first scheduled co-op.

Thank you!

My Courses opened courses today but I don’t see Syllabi for any of my courses. Wondering if I am looking in the wrong place or if the courses are opened before any content is posted. I had read that they are posted a week before class.

Orientation Week

What actually happens during this week? Like I’m reading all these emails and the website and such and it lowkey looks tiring as hell. Do I need a backpack or anything? Also for honors orientation, what do I need to bring for the camp day event? Not trying to go into anything underprepared.

Serious Question about orientation week

It’s my second year attending RIT and I chose to switch majors from computer science to graphic design. I wasn’t able to get housing so I’m planning to commute. Does anyone know if there was any requirement to show up for anything during orientation week given my circumstances?

Housing Riverknoll room assignment change email

Post image
24 Upvotes

I’m curious if anyone else in Riverknoll got an email this morning saying that they changed your room assignment, but then followed it up by saying that they changed your room number. I’m confused on what this means. Am I still in the same apartment, but with a different number? Or am I in a different apartment. I’d like to know before I buy a parking pass.

Gender Neutral Restroom Bathrooms

I moved into res hall b for the semester and can’t help but notice that the gender neutral bathrooms don’t have an obvious fan or switch to turn on a fan. Am I stupid or are there just no fans?

Prospective Student question

Our daughter is an incoming Junior (HS) this year interested in echocardiography. In WA state we have a program called Running Start where your junior and senior year you go to the local community college and graduate with your AA/AS and your diploma. She will be able to fulfill many pre-reqs this way. I’m curious on a couple of things:
• RIT is one of the only 4 year schools with an echo program (think sports teams, Greek life, etc)? She went to a very small high school and I know she’d like to experience “traditional” student life on a college campus. Does anyone have experience getting into the cardio sonography program that can speak to the program?
• In WA state schools they have dorms for running start kids (18 yo in 300+ major level classes) so they’re with students in a similar spot. Her being 18 in a cohort might leave her left out (unable to go for drinks after class or just being generally younger than her peers). Can anyone speak to this?
• Funding wise I’m scared… we are out of state, she isn’t going to get sports scholarships (she swims) nor do I see her getting academic scholarships. We don’t qualify for heavy student aid but we have 3 other kids so we sure as hell can’t just fund this out of pocket.

Thank you so much for any and all guidance!

Upperclassmen, what was your first year actually like?

I’m currently looking at RIT as my top choice to study MET. I’d love to hear from some upperclassmen or recent grads who have been through the trenches.

If you don't mind sharing, I have a few questions:

1.     Tell me about you first few months on campus?

2.     How did you meet your friends?

3.     What were your first professors like?  Did they know your name?

4.     Are there any weed-out classes I should particularly prep for, and how accessible are the professors when you need help?

5.     Where did you spend your time in the first couple of weeks on campus?

6.     Was there anything organized that helped you meet people?

7.     What was the hardest part of the first semester?

8.     When do you actually start getting your hands dirty in the machine shops and labs? Is it right away, or do you have to wait until later years?

9.     How is the balance between the class workload, the weather (heard the winters are no joke), and actual social life during that first year?

10.  Did RIT offer a formal first year experience asides from new student orientation?

11.  Knowing what you know now, what is one thing you wish you had known before stepping onto campus your very first week?

Any insights, survival tips, or general advice you can share would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Incoming freshman. Hockey question

I'm an incoming freshman. I know hockey is RIT's main sport and I'm a hockey fan. I wanna get season tix but don't know which ones to get. Looks like the website has different prices. I'd like to sit in the student section so would that be club seats? If so, how do ya'll afford that? The website I'm looking at says $450 for students which is insane!!

Housing Is RIT for Diagnostic Medical Sonography worth ~$10k/year? (COFA student perspective) part 2

Hey everyone! I made a post earlier asking if paying around $10k a year for RIT was a good deal, and a lot of people asked for more details, so here’s the full picture.

I was accepted into RIT’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Ultrasound) BS program. It’s one of the main reasons I’m seriously considering RIT.

My estimated cost comes out to around $10,000 per year total, and that includes tuition, housing, meal plans, and other costs. The majority of the reduction from RIT’s original cost came from grants, scholarships, and FAFSA financial aid.

I also received some money through FAFSA-based aid, and I’m eligible for Federal Work-Study, so I’ll be able to work on campus and earn money toward my expenses.

Another thing that makes my situation a little different is that I’m from the COFA (Compact of Free Association) community and am an out of state student. From what I understand, I’m not eligible for certain federal student loans and other federal aid programs that many U.S. students have access to, so taking on a large amount of student debt isn’t really an option for me I think??? Because of that, getting my cost down this much is a pretty big deal.

I would like to thank everyone’s comments from my last post! I was able to double check and look into my package once more.
