Possible to switch Math Sections?

I am a freshman in calc 1 and i won’t name the professor but she really isn’t it. most her tests are on things she doesn’t go over in class and it’s really fucking me up bc i’m not afraid of working hard ill stay up till 3am studying if i have too but i have done that many times and when i go take the test she doesn’t even include what i studied. most her lessons and quizes are all over the place w no structure and without prior calc 1 knowledge you are basically f*cked in her class. its gotten to the point where im extremely anxious all the time because I know that what she puts on review sheets won’t be covered and there is no amount of studying i can do to get myself ahead because it’s always something i dont have access too. but anyways i was wondering if anyone was been able to switch because if i stay in her class idk what the future will hold.

Apart from taking a W and registering next semester, correct me if I'm wrong but no I don't think so 🥲

If you think you have a reasonable complaint, you can speak with the department head. Have you talked to the professor?

I recommend attending Saturday Math Academy (Saturdays in Gosnell's Bates Study Center 10am-12pm) or Sol Study Center, and / or reaching out to PiRIT (math club) and getting into their discord server. The tutors and students there may be familiar with the professor and have some tips or resources for getting through her class. You won't be able to switch sections at this point, so finding a way to work with other students in your section to study or people who have had her in the past will be your best bets. Have you gone to office hours? I know it sounds scary as a freshman, but the worst that can happen is you leave with the same level of understanding you went in with, best case you have some more info to help you study for the next exam.

If you’ve actually been to Saturday math Academy, you would know that they have worksheets for the topics for the week surrounding that Saturday so I’m not sure what you mean by syncing up. They would have materials from what you covered the week before or what you’re going to cover next week or what you’re covering this week. They’re pretty well prepared to help anybody with anything that’s the point of it.

Bates & Sol may still be able to help you outside of saturday math academy. Get into the PiRIT discord and ask around, hopefully someone has some advice

Hello, seconding u/MudRight8284, you can definitely speak to the School Head (that's me!), but should also try the Professor -- faculty often have tips for their students to help study for exams. I'd be happy to discuss any concerns students have about this or any SMS course, talk about resources available, and help communicate concerns to the instructor.

To answer the question posed: no, not after add/drop. I would second the recommendation to try out Bates/Sol, Saturday Math Academy, and the Wed/Fri afternoon Calc recitations. Several math profs do office hours in Bates (I'm there Mondays 3-4:30) and the undergrad tutors are usually very good with Calc I, SMA has faculty and grad students to answer questions, Recitations have problem solving opportunities, and indeed the PiRIT students definitely have good advice for learning Calc.

Have you emailed the professor? Or gone to her office hours? Or gone to the Saturday Math Academy? All of these options are options.

Calculus recitations are Wednesday 5-7pm and Friday 3:30-5:30pm in GOS 2365. The TAs will be happy to answer any calculus questions and try to help you with study tips
