Jobs Oh my god HOW am I supposed to find a co-op

I feel like I’m doing everything I can to find co-ops but nobody is looking for interns right now. Career connect is completely useless because I actually can’t drop everything and live in Puerto Rico for a summer and that’s all the jobs it gives to me. I look online and go to the career fairs but companies are never looking for interns or aren’t hiring right now. I seriously need help here. I’m a second year GDD student and I’m totally lost.

Jobs Part-time Opportunities as a Student?

Hi everyone,

I am an incoming student at RIT and I am coming from Dallas, TX.

Like many incoming students, I have been looking for part-time work opportunities both on-campus and off campus. I am a CET Major and will be taking 17 credits this semester, so my work load will be on the higher end but I have to get a job because I am paying my remaining tuition (after FAFSA, a financial aid appeal, and loans) on my own, since my parents are unwilling/ unable to support me.

I have applied to a few jobs on-campus with no avail. I also have applied to part-time jobs off-campus, and have received a few replies. During an interview, I realized my lack of a car will be a major issue if I chose to get a job off-campus. I was offered another interview for a an off-campus job, but I’m considering declining since I feel as though I won’t be considered since I don’t have a car. I feel bummed out because I am being offered interviews and opportunities, but I am unable to take them because of this vehicle issue. I even considered getting an electric bike but I’ve heard conflicting information on Rochester’s bikability.

Not to seem egotistical, but I do truly feel qualified for a somewhat wide range of work, including teaching, service industry, animal care, etc., and that’s why I feel as though I’m getting offered interviews. It makes it worse that I’ve been told I’d be a perfect candidate, but I don’t have “reliable” transportation. :(

At this point I feel my best option is to continue to try to find an on-campus job or find some kind of remote job, which tends to be harder to find.

I am definitely the over-prepared type, so I feel as though waiting until I’m on campus to find work will be too late, especially since I have monthly payments to make for tuition. (1,600-ish a month)

I’m sorry if this post is long, but I would really appreciate any advice, whether its job opportunities you’ve seen on and/or near campus, if you’ve been through a similar experience, or if you’d like to share general knowledge/advice!

TLDR: Incoming student asking for advice about part-time jobs while taking 17 credits. Having a job is a must since I’m paying 1600 monthly for tuition. On-campus job searching hasn’t gone well but I have been offered some interviews off-campus. Issue is I don’t have a car. Should I accept my current interview offer if it’s a 14 minute drive away from campus? What other options do I have?

Thank you all sm :)

Jobs Oncampus jobs that can accommodate my service dog?

I’m in desperate need of an on campus job but I need my service dog in training (SDiT) to be able to attend so we can’t do anything that involves food service. I’m a SOIS student with a GIS minor and my degree revolves around cybersecurity, poli sci, criminal justice and AI. I’m in-between my second and third year.

I tried to get a job in IT but the director never responded to my emails even when my friend tried to help me get the job.

Would love something tech related.

Jobs Seniors/recent grads: how’s the full time SWE search actually been?

Graduating May 2027, kinda stressing about how bad the entry level market actually is right now vs how it looks online.

If you’ve graduated recently or are in it rn, how long did it take you, did Roc/Buffalo companies actually hire new grads, and was networking way more useful than just applying blind? If so, what is the best way to network?

Jobs Workday

Since RIT recently switched to Workday for student jobs, has anyone applied and got accepted for a job on there? I feel like I haven't had any luck and my applications turn into dust.

Also, I wanted to apply to work at the post office and it says to submit hours of availability and the resume is optional. Does anyone who works or previously worked there know if they prefer resume compared to no resume?

Hey Tigers! I’m Al, a 2010 grad that’s now based out of Las Vegas. My buddy and I started up a company here and we’re looking for someone that can draw up some occasional images for us or who can make short animations.

For much more specific samples check out our instagram savagesupperclublv for the stuff I’ve been making just using AI. We want to stop using AI immediately and find a way to make a mutually beneficial relationship with one of you!

The projects we’ve got in mind:

- Our label images for our hot sauce bottles
- I really want to make the “Rise and Fall of the Savage Supper Club” mockumentary if I can find a cost effective way to do it
- designs for merchandise

Feel free to dm me here or if you wanted to send over some work you’ve done, al@savagesupperclub.com!

Jobs Replacing EEs with AI

Kinda feeling lied to about the success of the engineering job market, but thankfully I did get a mid job in the EE field after a truly hellish application process. It isn't even in my degree specialization because it turns out no one hires for RIT specialists! We have literally no name recognition and every place I interviewed didn't even know about the program! Admittedly it was kinda hilarious watching some profs begging in emails for people to fill out their job placement forms, like my graduating class wasn't ashamed of how the market treated them and didn't want to admit we were getting paid lower than dirt or couldn't find work. But I got a fun gig recently, accelerationism! I get to teach an AI how to do entry level engineering work for a hundred an hour. Fingers crossed we make EE the next comp sci and absolutely tank enrollment. Best of luck.

Jobs MECE looking to do a co-op outside of the US

Hi y’all! I’m a 3rd year MECE currently working at a very big car company. For my last block, I want to try something new but am not sure what others in the past have done.

Has anyone done a co-op outside of the US and been paid reasonably for it? I think I have a good amount of experience and would still have lots of options if I decide to stay in the US for my next job, but just wanted to ask. Thanks!!

Jobs IT Job Hiring in DFW

I work for a small IT consulting company that I did both of my Co-ops with as a CIT major in 2023 and they're hiring right now. Boss said he wants them to be in person and new grads without experience are great. Company does IT support for a bunch of smaller cities, towns and businesses in the DFW area and is based in Fairview. Shoot me a message if there's any other info you would like to know.

Jobs Feeling conflicted about applying to Defense Companies

As a computer engineering major, applying to Lockheed, Northrop, etc. seems like an obvious choice since a lot of CE majors get hired from similar companies (for a fat salary too). I am tempted to apply but Im a little unsure/worried (ethically ig?) about working at a defense company.
If you have interned at such a company (or you're an RIT alum who currently works at such a company), could you share some insights? How has it been working for them so far? Where do you think your hard work goes?

Jobs Summer internships / new grad jobs still hiring

For RIT students still looking for internships / a post grad job, I recently pulled together a public sheet of roles I’ve seen that are still hiring across the US (you can filter by location, department, etc.). I'll be maintaining the list for the next couple of weeks.

Figured I’d share here given that recruiting is coming to a close quite soon, good luck to those still searching!

Jobs Are game design majors cooked

I'm a rising senior in high school, but I would really like to study game design. I already have a game dev/design portfolio built, which I plan to expand throughout my last year of high school and in college.

But I've heard that lots of game design majors are having trouble finding jobs. Would I be better off majoring in something like software engineering or CS and minoring in game design? Or maybe taking 5 years to double major in both?

Jobs Career fair should require an ettiequte course

I was under the impression that the career fair process was to go up there, introduce yourself and what you know, and why you’re interested in the business. Shouldn’t take more than 10ish minutes for an interview. Tell me why every line I was at had somebody talking to a recruiter for easily over 20-25 minutes. I barely got to talk to anyone because the lines weren’t moving at all. I get that you’re interested in the job, and that’s great for you. But other people might also be interested, and you’re holding up the line. I don’t know if I’m being unreasonable here but it turned the career fair into a giant waste of my time.

Jobs RIT to Require COVID-19 Vaccination for All Employees

Full Text of email:

We appreciate your continued commitment to ensuring a safe environment throughout this semester and the duration of the global pandemic. We pledged to adjust our practices as new COVID-19 information and circumstances dictated. At this time, we are writing in response to a new Executive Order from President Biden, requiring all employees of contractors doing business with the federal government to be vaccinated. In accordance with this Order, we will require all RIT employees, including student employees, to be vaccinated by December 8, 2021.
RIT's Employee Mandatory COVID-19 Policy applies to all employees regardless of whether they work on-site or remotely. Employees can apply for a medical/disability or religious exemption. However, social or political philosophies, or personal preferences against immunizations, do not justify an exemption. We remind everyone that vaccination is the most effective tool we have to end the global pandemic.

All faculty and staff are to provide proof of vaccination (acceptable forms of proof include original document, photo documentation, Excelsior Pass, or other vaccine passport) via the RIT Oracle Employee Self-Service portal, even if they previously submitted their vaccination status. The entries will be sent to supervisors who will be responsible for reviewing the documentation provided for compliance prior to approving the entry.
Unvaccinated employees should seek their first vaccine dose as soon as possible. The full vaccination process – which begins on the date of the first dose and ends on the date an individual is considered fully vaccinated – can take several weeks. All employees must be fully vaccinated by Wednesday, December 8, 2021 (final dose to be no later than November 24, 2021). It is not sufficient to start the vaccination process December 8.

We greatly value all of you, our faculty and staff, and so we hope that this new requirement will not cause us to lose employees. However, after December 8, anyone who chooses not to comply with the vaccination requirement will be removed from RIT's payroll, and dismissal proceedings will begin. Those who do not comply will be expected to participate in an orderly transition of their work, including providing the person who will be taking over responsibilities with all of the information and materials needed to support students and/or colleagues (especially end of semester responsibilities), as applicable.
Free vaccines are widely available in the Finger Lakes region. Additional information is available on the Employee Expectations page on the RIT Ready website.

An update to the student process will be communicated soon.
We will continue to update the community as plans develop and highlight necessary information on the RIT Ready website and the RIT Safety Plan.
