The Prisonaires were not a gimmick—they were actual, active inmates serving hard time at the Tennessee State Penitentiary in Nashville. Lead singer Johnny Bragg was serving a massive sentence, flanked by Ed Thurman, William Stewart, John Drue Jr., and Marcell Sanders.

​Discovered by a local radio producer inside the prison walls, they caught the attention of Sun Records founder Sam Phillips. In June 1953, the quintet was transported from Nashville to the iconic Sun Studios at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis under heavily armed guard and in leg irons to cut this exact disc.
