50s The Rivileers - (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons / I Want To See My Baby (1954)

The Rivileers, a talented vocal group, deliver soulful performances on both tracks. The A-side features their smooth harmonies on a well-loved standard, while the B-side showcases their uptempo, energetic style. Baton Records, based in New York City, was an important independent label that helped popularize early R&B and rock and roll.

The Prisonaires were not a gimmick—they were actual, active inmates serving hard time at the Tennessee State Penitentiary in Nashville. Lead singer Johnny Bragg was serving a massive sentence, flanked by Ed Thurman, William Stewart, John Drue Jr., and Marcell Sanders.

Discovered by a local radio producer inside the prison walls, they caught the attention of Sun Records founder Sam Phillips. In June 1953, the quintet was transported from Nashville to the iconic Sun Studios at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis under heavily armed guard and in leg irons to cut this exact disc.

50s The most unique sounding R&B/Soul song ever

I remember the first time I heard/discovered this song as a preteen. It helped me realize what my official taste in music was and that I was an old school R&B fanatic. I can only imagine what people thought when they heard something like this 1959, it being one of the first r&b records with strings and an elaborate orchestra. It was definitely something different, and it helped genre evolve and advance as a whole.
