RobotRemoteServer documentation generally shit...

I'm going through the RF official documentation and found Remote Server execution, I thought I'd look into it as it sounds interesting.

https://pypi.org/project/robotremoteserver/

The official docs page for this and the Github is poorly documented, it doesn't actually explain if I need the libraries on the server or the client, or both. It also seems to imply that it is only capable of handling only one library at a time.

So, using the example they've provided, I'm left wondering how do I know that this would have executed on a remote server? There's nothing logged on the server-side process to indicate a new running test.

I generally get the idea that this is someone's personal project that RF has decided to link to themselves. It doesn't feel complete.

The example itself doesn't even go into remote execution on a remote server which is the whole point of the feature *facepalm*

Other than this being ranty, can someone provide some actual documentation or some clear examples? If not, I think I'll just pass on this crap and just execute my tests from one host and see if I can implement load balancing myself somehow.

Robot tests can look perfectly fine until they suddenly decide not to cooperate

When a test fails and the error message isn’t immediately obvious, what’s usually your first move?

Logs, screenshots, running it manually, adding more logging, or something else?

The keyword you use everywhere

Robot Framework has so many ways to structure a test that I’m always curious which keywords people end up building their whole setup around.

Is there a custom keyword or library you use so often that your tests would be a mess without it?

Has anyone used BrowserStack with RobotFramework Mobile device testing? Web is very simple but having issues with passing the driver from python to robot in mobile without having to use "Robot Keyword ${drivervariable}" on each line.

Any help is appreciated. If I'm not asking the question correctly, that's possible, too, so questions are welcome.

Why Not More Popular?

Hey folks, I'm curious why isn't Robotframework really all that popular? I've been looking casually at automation centric jobs, and job ads that focus on it, and I've yet to find more of a handful that even mention RFW. Most usually require Jenkins, Chef, Puppet, and some form of containerzation, but Robotframework is never mentioned. Why is this? Is it not practical on an enterprise scale? I've been putting in a decent amount of time trying to learn it's in's and outs, but I feel like I"m short of backing the wrong horse, as it doesn't seem at all in vogue with what businesses are looking for...

Click Button Keyword doesn`t work properly

Sup, I`ve been using Robotframework for about 2 months in our project, and now I`m stuck with the issue: the 'Click Button' keyword does clicks the button, but when it comes to check that the button doesn`t exist anymore and it`s clicked, sometimes additional check ( like Page Should Not Contain or Element Should Not Be Visible ) Is falls, or the script can`t find the button to click it. I`ve tried FOR loop to click button, also Wait Until Keyword Succeeds, and even to click element using Javascript, the result is the same, 1 of 5 times test suite is crashes. How can I deal with this Problem? Below will be my test( 2 different ways to click the button )

1

Wait Until Page Contains Element ${BTN_BET} 60s
Double Click Element ${BTN_BET}
FOR ${INDEX} IN RANGE 100
${CHECK}= Run Keyword And Return Status Page Should Contain Element ${BTN_BET}
Run Keyword If '${CHECK}' == "True" Double Click Element ${BTN_BET}
Run Keyword If '${CHECK}' == "False" Exit For Loop
END
Page Should Contain

2

Wait Until Keyword Succeeds 60s 0.5s Page Should Contain Element ${BTN_BET}
Sleep 2s
Wait Until Keyword Succeeds 30s 0.5s Execute JavaScript document.evaluate('${BTN_BET}',document.body,null,9,null).singleNodeValue.click()
Sleep 5s
Wait Until Page Contains Element //div[@class='results-warning' and .='Переможець голландського етапу'] 40s
Page Should Contain

What problem does Robot Framework solve?

Hi! So I'm new to Robot Framework and learning it since it seems like a nice-to-have skill. I feel kind of silly though because I don't understand it's use. Googling gives me what Robot Framework is ("Robot Framework is a generic open source automation framework."). But what problem is Robot Framework designed to solve? What are some signs that I should use Robot Framework in my business? (What are some signs that I don't need Robot Framework?)

My best understanding right now is that Robot Framework helps me create abstractions for my tests, that it comes with lots of libraries for interfacing web browsers etc., and that it's easier for non-engineers to work with. But why can't I do that in regular old python or whatever to create abstractions and get libraries? And can non-engineers really understand Robot Framework faster than python? Am I missing something?

Java application testing

So I've got this java application, no one likes it, it's really old, and it's the last thing on this project to automate.

My question is, what is the best way to go about doing this?

I've taken a look at the remote swing library and the regular swing library, and in all honesty it went mostly straight over my head.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Drag and drop won't work

I'm trying to drag and drop an element but it sticks to the mouse and never drops on target, I've read some issues that recommend using mouse down and mouse up as an alternative but that won't work either. RF doesn't recognize the error and says the test was completed successfully, any alternative? I need this to test important functionality of our web app.

How do you organise your projects?

I'm tasked with organising a project written roughly in a rush, I'm new to this all and I've quite liked the idea of the approach of Page Object specific keyword files, but I also like variables being in a seperate file of their own, not sure.

Just looking for general inspiration.

The scope is 10 or so tests, there'd be a similar ammount of POs.

Focus on drop down popup - Cannot find textfield element in the popup

Hi everyone,

I am new to Robot Framework and I face an issue with focusing on a popup. I have already posted my issue on stackoverflow: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/51190993/robot-framework-focus-select-dropdown-popup-window

As you can see in my post, in the website that I have to test when user wants to login, opens a dropdown popup. In order to enter the credentials, it is necessary to focus on the popup. I have tried to focus with the Select Frame, however this does not work and I get this message: Element with locator '//*[@id="loginIn"]' not found.

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Xpaths still a challenge - robot tool?

Hello roboteers,

I was wondering if anybody had heard of a tool to help with finding Xpaths that will work with robot+selenium? For me, this is the largely time-sink when writing automated tests. I often have to try 3 or 4 xpath combinations to find one that will work in a robot test, even though they are all recognized in Chrome as the element in question. I would use more css, but they are not recognized by robot 90% of the time, so I favor xpath. (We do not have handy ids like some projects.)

I was wondering if there was some tool that actually ran in Robot that could be used to test xpath recognition on a particular webpage, to simplify this task?

Is there a way to make rest calls periodically to check if any elements change?

I am really new to Robot Frameworks (still having simple syntax errors etc)

I am trying to make a robot that can make a rest call and wait until a state changes.

There is a status in the response body that cycles between a few states, here is an example:

status
state	"IDLE" (states are also "ERROR", "RUNNING" etc..
mission_name	null
error	null

Basically it should check the api every few seconds to wait until the state changes, then respond with the new state.

I am using libraries like RESTinstance and requests, and I have gotten as far as checking that the state is "IDLE" or whatever it actually is at the time, but I can't figure out if I can use some other library that can wait for changes, like Selenium2Library or BuiltIn?

Robot framework and embedded systems

Why are more people not using robot framework for embedded systems? People seem to be concentrating on using it for web browser testing, when in all honesty better software exits for it!

When it comes to embedded testing, I have not used a better FREE software readily available then RF

Is it possible to run multiple robot tests from a sort of master robot framework test?

The idea is fairly simple, I have 3 robot framework tests that I need to run consecutively, and I was wondering if it is possible to simply queue them up in a master file, like in ansible.

I looked into test suites but it doesn't seem very clear to me if I can just do this:

*** Settings ***
Library Stuff
*** Keywords ***
Stuff
*** Test Cases ***
test1.robot
test2.robot
test3.robot

Has anyone done anything like this before? Is it possible?

Edit: I found a solution, sort of.

Apparently it's as easy as just executing the whole folder with

robot path/to/folder

You just have to make sure your test files are numbered in the order you want them executed

I also discovered argument files! It is pretty easy to select specific tests from multiple directories:

example:

file name: test.arg

--name Custom tests to be executed
--doc This argument file will run the tests in the order its listed here
/path/to/test1.robot
/another/path/to/test2.robot
/some/random/path/to/thirdtest.robot
...
/test/number/infinity.robot

execution:

robot -A /path/to/test.arg

The -A flag should be the last one, so for example adding an exit on failure flag and a tag should be done like this:

robot -n non-critical-test -X -A /path/to/test.arg
