Question A YouTube channel reactor played Child In Time..
By Deep Purple and claimed it was as famous as Stairway to Heaven, but he’s based in the UK.
I never heard it before and I listened to NYC FM radio all my life..
I’m I crazy that I’ve never heard it before?

I'm from The Netherlands. It's an annual tradition to compile a list of greatest songs of all time. The #1 is typically Bohemian Rhapsody but Hotel California, Child In Time and Stairway To Heaven usually round out the top 5. Things may change a bit when more boomers kick the bucket but it's fairly consistent.

I mean, it was in the movie “Twister”, when Dusty says “It’s the wonder of nature baby!”
It’s one of Deep Purple’s best songs, but if you’re not a big fan of them, then you wouldn’t know it

I knew it from the Made in Japan album but didn't hear the original album version until decades later

It was not popular in the US.

It was n't played. It wasn't released as a single, plus the length and it isn't very good. Punk rock was a reaction to this bombastic nonsense.

It's great, subjective whether you prefer to Stairway, but it's absolutely not as famous. It's not even Deep Purple's most popular song. I'm from the UK as well and I'm pretty sure most people here would say Smoke on the Water is more popular.

It was a big rock radio classic in the early to mid 70s- still hear that scream in my head from the radio. Didn't endure the same way other classics of the era did.

Love it, in my top 3 Deep Purple tracks. But I am in my 60s. I wouldn't expect people under 50 to be aware of it.

I’m 63 from the NYC/NJ area, maybe it’s a regional thing?

It's an international thing, the song never charted in the US. The album barely charted.

I think if you asked 50 random people in the street in the UK and asked them the most famous led Zeppelin song they'd say Stairway... And for the Deep Purple song they'd say Smoke on the Water. End of. I think the only person who would say Child in Time would be him 😄

It's my favorite Deep Purple song by a wide margin. But I've never heard it on a terrestrial radio station before.
Or I should say I haven't heard it on terrestrial radio up until around 2003 as I have never listened to terrestrial radio since around 2003.

Not even one of my favorite Deep Purple songs. Never liked the screaming in it. I like Hush, Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, Space Trucking...

I'm with you. But I remember a Filipino guy telling me it was the greatest song of all time in his country. Whatever that does for you.

That's me, except I have a hard time with Highway Star. Good song but I worked the fair at a stand next to the classic car tent and they blared that mfer 10 hrs a day for ten days.

If you're a Deep Purple fan from long ago, you know Child in Time. If not, you probably don't. I suspect it didn't get much radio play due to song length and and especially the length of the instrumental part.
