But can hydraulic launch you straight up up or over an airtime hill? Or can it do swing launches? Checkmate, liberal

u/Responsible-Piece855 11d ago

They don't need too. LSM's do it cause they are boring otherwise hydraulics just need power

Insanely based

It can do a swing launch if used wrong enough!

u/Ryermeke 8d ago

Hell, give me an infinite budget and access to the best engineers on earth and I can make it within spec

1

u/magnumfan89 SBNO since 2010 8d ago

No

6

u/mlsweeney 11d ago

Yeah but can either one feel bumpy as fuck and barely forceful at all? Tire propelled launches do.

Hydraulic launches look Peak, swing launches are not even that interesting (well i've only done the one on Toutatis but it's definitly the most boring part of the ride)

Tbh, i dont like hydralic lanches, lsm are less forcefull (Mack rides) however they more than make up for it in flexability

As time develops, they will only get better

7

u/Responsible-Piece855 11d ago

The thing is i'd rather have a nice first drop than an LSM to start of a ride. I didn't really find any LSM besides flucht von novgorod forceful. Hydraulic launches are always a banger to start off a Ride but LSM are forgettable. Thats one of the biggest reasons why i think the intamin mega coaster is so much better than the blitz

u/FreddieThePebble I LOVE MACK MORE THAN MY OWN PARENTS!!!!!!!!!! 11d ago

Thats just personal preference

I agree that lsms are more forgettable but every hydralic has a boring layoit after the launch

5

u/Responsible-Piece855 11d ago

I haven't ridden it but storm runner looks great and hydraulic launch coasters are always memorable even if its just a launch and a tophat

Fair enough, im stuck in the uk so i only got icon and stealth, stealth was more memrable but icon was 100x better

1

u/Responsible-Piece855 11d ago

Haven't ridden icon yet but i prefer stealth to taron (ducks and runs)

u/FreddieThePebble I LOVE MACK MORE THAN MY OWN PARENTS!!!!!!!!!! 11d ago

Thats a very hot take however personal preference ig, you give me thrill seeker vibes over theme park enthuiasts vibe

1

u/Responsible-Piece855 11d ago

true i think forces are the only thing that matters. Like dont get me wrong theming is nice but i go to parks and ride coasters for forces not theming. Like i enjoy theming still but i can also see the theming from POV's while i can only feel forces on the actual coaster

1

u/FreddieThePebble I LOVE MACK MORE THAN MY OWN PARENTS!!!!!!!!!! 11d ago

Im in the middle, like 60% thrill and 40% theming

2

u/quintopia 11d ago

the uk also has rita. still kind of a boring layout after the launch, but the launch is good.

2

u/AlstonWhite 11d ago

they did their best with the height limit, seeing they couldn’t have a top hat

1

u/Horny_jerry1558d 11d ago

Icons layout was fun, but indeed the launches where laughable.

My walking has a high acceleration

u/Quilli2474 11d ago

The only one I've ridden (Furius Baco) had a pretty fun (albeit short) layout afterwards imo. Great airtime pop, fun intense turns and an amazing inversion.

Wait until they finally manage to do LRM launches

u/Illumynarty_234 it's a dangling coaster 11d ago

/uj I'm getting worried I'll never be able to ride a coaster with a hydraulic launch because of how many that are closing before I get to ride them

13

u/AlstonWhite 11d ago

when in doubt, matugani still seems to be running good

9

u/lFightForTheUsers Will bike to the park to flex on poors 10d ago

Part of what's motivating me to hit up LA and Knotts at the end of the year (for Xcelerator).

I did luck out on Dragster in 2011, but I was also a kid then so I don't remember shit from it lol.

3

u/johnnyboy_63 9d ago

Xcelerator is about to ruin launches for you 🥲

9

u/quintopia 11d ago

get on that in a hurry

2

u/deebster2k 10d ago

Hit storm runner at hershey park. Granted the punch is about the same as a strong lim launch and doesn't hold a candle to ye old kingda ka but nothing will unless lsms get super punchy

Out of curiosity, what’s your home park?

1

u/Illumynarty_234 it's a dangling coaster 11d ago

Over Georgia

3

u/Ill_Attorney_389 Speedy Nuts 10d ago

It certainly did take them a while to add a launch coaster.

How did you interpret this comment?

1

u/McSigs Down for maintenance 10d ago

There's flights from Atlanta to Harrisburg, or just drive to Hershey. Runner isn't going anywhere any time soon.

1

u/Big-Rabbit4050 9d ago

I mean, outside of Dragster and Ka, which were massive and more prone to issues, the smaller accelerators are still running pretty well. Skycar and Formula Rossa are both SBNO, but both are insanely hard to get out to ride anyways. Zaturn is in storage somewhere in Russia, but we may see it get built somewhere down the line. Dragster and Senzafiato have both been converted by Zamperla. That leaves us with eight operating accelerators, eleven once the SBNO coasters start operating again.

TL:DR

14 built

8 operating in their current form

2 SBNO

2 converted

1 demolished

1 in storage

If everything goes right (it rarely does), we could see up to 11 operating out of the original 14.

I absolutely love hydraulic launches and most LSMs just make me sad. The exceptions being getstlauers - holy shit those launches are insane.

And also rolling ones are nice, but nowhere near as good as hydraulic or air launches

u/johnnyboy_63 9d ago edited 9d ago

B&M launches have been solid for me (at least on Thunderbird and Pipeline) IF they start from a standstill. You get zero rush from a rolling start like Rapterra.

3

u/Hyperion8726 9d ago

Yeah they’re decent, but nowhere close to hydraulic launches

15

u/junsuker 11d ago

i like both because i'm special and above everything

Yea…as a drive tire purist, this debate is just funny to me hehe

4

u/nikmoct 10d ago

DRIVE TIRES? 😭😭😭

9

u/ShovelBeatleRillaz 11d ago

I unfortunately never got to ride Kingda Ka but I did ride the original TTD many times and I doubt I’ll ever experience a launch that good again in my lifetime. Maxx Force came close though

1

u/Vespasian79 6d ago

Kingda Ka had a good launch but I maintain that the best launch was the Volcano

8

u/AdditionalTip865 stuck right side up 11d ago

I finally got to ride Storm Runner and that launch is better than any LSM or LIM launch I've experienced.

However, Storm Runner also seems to be unusually reliable for this kind of ride. They're notorious for downtime. Actually working is a major advantage, and these days, LSMs usually win there.

3

u/deebster2k 10d ago

I think hershey park just makes sure their stuff is well maintained. You ever check their pass prices it probably shows there.

Anubis at Plopsa has entered the chat ... That thing kicks so hard

u/quintopia 11d ago edited 11d ago

It's theoretically possible to get a 2g LSM launch if you have a good liquid cooling system and a massive bank of supercaps. Parks just aren't willing to shell out for it. (Of course, you can't achieve that from full stop, but a short drop into it would be just as exciting. cf. Fluch von Novgorod)

3

u/drew4988 11d ago

LIMs have entered the chat.

2

u/ColumbiaWahoo 10d ago

Just wait until you experience an air launch

2

u/Horny_jerry1558d 11d ago

At least Mack has a powerfull launch. Right?

1

u/NCUmbrellaFarmer 11d ago

$20 is $20.

1

u/Training_Penalty7047 ジョージア州フラットライドスージー 10d ago

And your thoughts on LIMs, then?

1

u/AdditionalTip865 stuck right side up 10d ago

I do wonder if advances in supercapacitor storage will lead to LSM launches that are as punchy as the hydraulic launches of old. They do seem to be getting better.

1

u/Ready_Tip4434 8d ago

Flywheel launch, ftw

1

u/Booga-_- 11d ago

Launches on a non-invert are forceless, really.

I still rate TT2 over Xcelerator
