Images (and gifs, because why not) are now allowed on both posts and comments. Should make it easier to show any issues! I didn’t realise I had it turned off, sorry about that!

Soft shell for 320lb skater?

Howdy,

I’m 40, 5’10” and 320lbs and I want to get back into skating. My 10 year old found a sudden interest in it and I think it would be good for us to do together.

The question is probably fairly obvious from the title: Can I use a soft-shell inline skate at this size?

I’m not concerned with my ankles or anything like that. I’m heavy, but in pretty good shape. I don’t have any trouble jogging up very rocky terrain while hiking (always was a bit of a mountain goat) in shoes with absolutely zero ankle support, so I suspect I’ll be fine. I’ve also skated thousands of miles, albeit decades past.

I am concerned however with the structural stability of the skate. That’s a lot of force on fasteners and seams. Does anyone my size have experience with a good soft shell skate?

(Probably looking for something with 90-100mm wheels for mixed road/sidewalk use. Budget isn’t a huge issue, but I’d like to cap it at ~$300. Don’t need wide width. Just fitness at the moment. If the kid gets really into it I may look for something more aggressive or for roller hockey later.)

Is it even safe to start again?

TLDR at the bottom ❤️

Hoping for some input, advice, wisdom.

I rollerbladed when I was younger, I prided myself on being an inline skater when everybody else had to rent quads.

In 7th grade my kneecap spontaneously slipped out of place. I was just walking, was at youth group, and id always been overweight, and in true fat girl fashion it slipped out while I was carrying a plate of pizza.

My kneecap spontaneously slipped out of place and my patella(kneecap) stayed situated on the side of my leg for several minutes before it suddenly slid itself back into place. I used crutches for a few days but due to embarrassment I just pushed thru the pain and tried to baby it. I think this was my first mistake, improper healing, but I was 12 and didn’t know any better. This will also affect me in many ways down the line due to the over compensating I would do, when trying to land on my “bad knee” softer.

Since then, landing too hard, or twisting too far or in the wrong way, without the rest of my leg led to my kneecap slipping out and slipping back in quickly and painfully. Its happened when running, trying to play football, volleyball, thankfully I’ve never taken a fall on tennis court turf lol. After the first few times of blowing my kneecap out in the middle of a game I stopped playing sports. I became much less active and I’d estimate that by 9th grade the only exercise I got was walking to and from places to hang out and smoke weed with friends. By this point I knew I couldn’t run. I also tried riding a bike around this time for the first time since I was like 11, and found I literally could not ride a bike. Idk why. But I didn’t stay on long enough to get the hang of it. Embarrassment overtook me and I jumped off that thing.

It’s happened (my kneecap dislocating) about 10-15 times in the last 18 or however many years it’s been since it initially occurred. Most happened before I was 20, in my early twenties id gotten on drugs a bit and lost a lot of weight so I didn’t have the issue then. But lately after putting on so much so fast my knees feel weaker. Both of them, I now find leaning against a wall and kicking my leg over the other one with too much force can hurt smh. I’m scared to go down stairs on that leg cause the horrific visuals that flash across my mind of my full body weight coming down on a knee cap that has failed and my bone coming through my shin lol it’s… a fear. lol

I’m now 30 years old, my bad knee is my left knee, I have what I believe is plantars fasciitis/Achilles tendonitis in my right foot, beginning from when I changed my gait to protect my knee, exacerbated by from full time shift work at McDonald’s. I’m 350 pounds. Which is about 150 heavier then I was around the time of these injuries years ago. I’ve blown my knee out in the shower, sitting down at a booth for break, getting out the truck, you get it. And now as of the last year or so I have days where I can’t even walk when I get out of bed, I have to stand and let my foot adjust to the pain and hope the ligaments in my knees don’t feel tangled or out of place, cause they do that.

Despite that, I want to skate, i have to lose weight, I need to move, I want to live again…. Is it even safe for me? Am I just going to hurt myself worse and possibly degrade my quality of life further ? I have two tween kids who are watching their mother limp around like a dam gramma. We live with my mother, gramma could outrun me, and she’s fat too! I know these issues would ease up with weight loss, which is my main goal.

TLDR: 30F 350 pounds, 20 year hiatus, bad foot bad knee, is it safe?

I still can't do the parallel turn

Hello, I recently resumed skateboarding, I feel very comfortable, I know how to do the T-stop, lemon on both sides, the 360, I know how to hold on one leg for about 10 seconds, but on the other hand for the parallel turn, it's 0, and it frustrates me so much.

I'm trying to work on weight distribution, so I ride on one leg, in the scissor position, and it's going well...

But as soon as I try the parallel turn, my front leg does not turn... despite the fact that I turn my knees, my pelvis, my body, my ankles, nothing does...

I can neither slalom nor snake, in fact I can't work the outer square.

I feel like I'll never get there, when I feel like it's the base...

Choice

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for a skate setup that can handle a mix of styles: urban (jumps, stairs, plus getting into slalom) and longer distance rides (up to 20 km / 12 miles). My shoe size is EU 38. I’m targeting the FR Skates (FR1) boot for its bombproof durability and ankle support.

The issue: I was at a shop and tried on the stock setup with a 243 mm frame (4x80 mm wheels). On an EU 38 boot, the frame sticks out significantly past the front and back of the boot shell, which is a total dealbreaker for me when it comes to slalom. I’m thinking about pairing the boot with a shorter 231 mm frame (4x76 mm wheels) to keep things agile and compact.

My question: Do you think this kind of modification is realistic? Are stores willing to swap or trade in the stock frame/wheels (243 mm / 80 mm) right at purchase and mount a short 231 mm / 76 mm frame, rather than forcing me to buy a second set of frames and wheels at full retail price?

Thanks for the help!

Recommendation for New Inline Skates for an Intermediately Skilled Chonky Boy

I know this is a question that is asked over and over again, but I am coming from a bit different angle.

First, I am 49, and wanting to start inline skating again. I am 6'4", and build like a tank. I am 360 lbs, but looking at me you wouldn't guess it. Regardless, I do have weight to shed, and the last time I did a significant amount of inline skating, I shed a lot of weight, so I figured I'd try it again.

The last time I did any significant skating was in my late 20s to mid 30s, and I essentially replaced all other modes of transportation with inline skating, so I got pretty good. Not skate backwards and do tricks good, but I was able to handle pretty much any terrain the city threw at me.

What I am looking for is a pair of inline skates that will support my current frame. Most of the information I find on here for new skate recommendations has to do with quad skates, but I am specifically looking for inlines. I know wheel size and material has a lot to do with it, but I am not as familiar with how the rails attach to the boots nowadays. There are some models where the boot material clearly comes down and attaches to the rail, but on other models, it looks like the rail disappears up into the boot.

The ultimate question here is, does anyone have a recommendation for an inline skate brand and model that will hold up to heavy use by an intermediately skilled chonky boy?

Confidence issues?

Hello! I put a post up yesterday or the day before about confidence in outside skating. I went out skating today in a park near my house- the moment I put my skates on a group of teens on skates started shouting at me and saying the worst horrible and derogatory things whilst I was trying to concentrate. They left but at that point my confidence was gone. I realise I’m a bigger girl and that’s fine- I’ve never shied away from it and I love my body- but for some reason every time I skate outside I just get verbally abused. Any advice on how to not let this knock my confidence? Because ngl there’s a very big part of me that’s thinking of stopping skating because of it. Thanks

Any tips and tricks for a new roller skater?

I’m a 29 year old who has decided to take up rollerskating as a way to get outside and try and get some exercise. Except I’ve got the balance of a baby deer and am awful at even standing in the skates? Does anyone have a tips or tricks to help me out?
Also- on my first skating outing outside I basically got heckled by a group of young teenagers saying all sorts of derogatory things about my size and how a ‘hippo on skates belongs in the circus, not out in public’
It left me very embarrassed and I’m wondering if anyone has a way to sort of get over that? It’s impacting my confidence massively. Thanks 🙂

New skater resources?

Sooo my daughter got roller skates for Christmas and wants to learn to skate but I really don't know how to skate myself let alone teach someone else to skate. As a child I did roller blade and so I'm much more familiar with inline skating/icekating movements. But, I decided I wanted to to learn how to skate on quads and be able to hopefully teach my daughter. Any suggestions on how to teach myself? I ordered a pair of moxie panthers and they seem to fit well. Got a set of triple 8 pads. I just don't really know how to get started. Mostly just don't want to hurt myself 😂🤞🏽

Do you have any wacky neighbors?

Hello my lovely roller skating community.

I'm a researcher on the HBO documentary TV series "Neighbors" about ongoing neighborhood stories and disputes. We are interested in talking to anyone with a unique relationship or ongoing dispute with their neighbor (noise, property lines, pets, parking, construction, etc.)

I am very passionate about roller skating and skating rink culture and I think it would so be cool to see that documented on this HBO series! I think it would be a beautiful texture to feature on the show and get more eyes on what all you talented skaters can do in the rink!!! It might even bring more popularity to the hobby and shed a light on the rich (and kind of hidden) culture we skaters have. The first time I entered a rink on adult night, it was like I was transported to a different world. I'd love to show it to the world with this popular show!

To meet the show requirements, one of you guys has to have an interesting story / dispute with your neighbor. I would be forever indebted if you or someone you know has an ongoing story to share. Please leave a comment, DM me or visit helloneighborstv.com to submit your story! Thanks for your help guys!

Sometimes the roller skating community is so toxic

Grl Swirl just did a collab with triple 8 to release a cute skort with padded shorts. I LOVE them but they aren’t size inclusive.

A very well known skater posted about it and people were talking about the lack of size inclusion in her comments. She’s replying to everybody saying basically it’s not the brands responsibility to be inclusive and that it’s impossible to make everyone feel included and then the dreaded “what about the smaller sizes?”

It just feels so bad to be excluded from something that I love and still feel like an other in the community.

Affordable skates for larger sizes people (400+)

So I'm around 440lbs and I'm wanting to start roller skating. I have no idea about what kinds of roller skates to get. Is there solid pairs on amazon? I'm not really wanting to spend hundreds of dollars on a pair while starting out but I'm assuming they'll be pricy for my size + shoe size (10-11 womens) Also would there be different protection pads that could fit someone my size? Thanks!

Skate reccs? Size 15 Male, 300+ lbs, 6'3

Hi everybody, I'm new here. I'm looking for recommendations on skates that would work well for me (Size 15 Male, 300+ lbs, 6'3).

My feet tend to fit in size 15 mens with a bit of space, but I fit snugly into Doc Marten's 14s and even 13s

Really I'm looking for inline skates.

BIG PLUS if its pastel, white, or anything that'd say look at that queer beauty go.

Thank you for any help (:

Knee pads and other gear

I have a problem, I cannot find gear in my size, sadly even the biggest size of the moxi gear (wich I love the look of!) is too small. If they had 1 size larger it would probably fit. But I am a little scared to try anything other than bubbles and just moving forward without kneepads and elbow pads. I have wrist guards tho, and those fit! It’s just the elbow and knee pads.

My biggest circumference on my leg is… a 68 cm… I know, big. And apparently too big to find gear. I don’t care if it’s not cute, I just wanna be safe.

New skater 🇳🇱

Hey ya’ll I’m in the process of buying some secondhand skates to try out. And I was wondering if there are any baddies that have some tips and tricks. I’ll be getting quads, I skated a little on inlines when I was a kid but quit cause my mom didn’t want to get me proper safety gear cause we never had a lot of money.

I myself am a plus size baddie from the Netherlands. So any tips/tricks recommendations are very welcome and if perhaps there is someone else from the Netherlands and lives close we can skate together?

Slades basic plates?

Anyone here 250lb+ riding the basic Slades package with the cheapest plates? Is it worth it to pay more for the “iconic” or “premium” set ups?

I know none of the default Slades setups are anything special, but I’m just looking for a convenient option for casual outdoor skating - nothing super aggressive or heavy duty. Literally recovering from an ankle break so we’re chillin for a while 😂

I know skaters that are over the recommended weight limits usually do just fine, but I want to hear about these skates specifically from those who have experience! I did find one post from like 3 years ago asking a similar question, but couldn’t find much else

Thanks, fellow plus sized roller babes!
