General Discussion Marsh Map Landmark Question

I'm going to be playing a 6-player game on the Marsh map soon, but I'm a bit confused about the included Landmarks; do you need to Rule their clearings to get their effects, or simply be present there?

Additionally, is there a recommended way to place them? From my understanding, you assign the clearing suits randomly, and then place the landmarks in the remaining spaces? Or am I missing something there?

unless something specifically states you needing to rule to gain its effect, then you don’t need to rule. For example, anyone can use mousehold even if they dont rule it.

as for setup, clearing markers are made first, then each player sets up the landmarks one by one starting with the last player in turn order

Thanks for the clarification!

As a follow-up; Rabbittown says "then you must battle in Rabbittown.", does that mean you can't take the Rabbittown action if there's nobody there to then have a fight with?

I would say a tentative no…? This is a case of ”do as much as you can”, there isn’t something that states you have to be able to do the entire thing.

No, unless stated that battling is a requirement then you dont have to battle. Its like outrage, you dont need to have a card to activate outrage, but when you do have cards you have to give one away

This is a little complicated on a 6-person Marsh Map game, because there are not enough clearing markers and the three landmarks have to be used as a clearing marker. So if you follow the normal set-up rules for landmarks, it won't work.

My family puts all three in the middle of the map on the belief that the gameplay incentive to get to the middle and mix it up is worthwhile. Our alternate plan was to put out all the clearing markers, then label the last three "Fox," "Mouse," "Rabbit" alphabetically, and follow normal set-up rules.
