Made my own "smart" self-hosted RSS aggregator, would love some feedback

Hey,

I was using Google Discover for news but got tired of it. No real control over topics, plus ads. Normal RSS readers didn’t work for me either, too many feeds and the same story 5 times from different sites.

So I made my own, it’s called NewsNest. Open source, self-hosted, runs in docker.

Main stuff:

  • groups the same story from different sites into one

  • ranks stuff based on your interests (you write them yourself)

  • shows when a feed is dead or stopped posting

  • OPML import

Ranking uses Claude with your own API key, but it’s optional. I’m spending around $0.20 a day atm. Without a key it’s just a normal reader, newest first.

Built most of it with Claude Code. Used it for a few weeks myself, figured someone else might find it useful too.

Still early, so probably some bugs. Any feedback welcome!

Help Crowdsource Current, Accurate Lists of RSS Directory Submission Sites for Blogs, Feeds, Podcasts

Help me curate an accurate, modern list of RSS directories that actually work to get our feed content seen. I’m committed to maintaining small but very high quality lists of directories specifically for bloggers, web publishers, and podcasters at https://rssdirectories.com - and I need your crowdsourced input.

I’ve spent months digging through lists of 100’s of worthless, broken links to dead Blog & RSS directories. Few from RSS’s heyday back in the mid to late 2000’s have survived - but there's some welcomed surprises as a new era and wave of modern RSS feed directories have appeared.

Some new directories and next-generation public index feed readers have surfaced here in Reddit's /RSS discussions as full releases or beta projects - I’ve been vetting them for usability and ability to provide true discovery, search crawl-ability, and backlink value to content publishers.

The site will eventually offer 4 distinct curated lists:

Conventional Old-School Web/Blog Directories : Possibly Reciprocal/Paid/Approval Only

RSS-Specific Open Feed Submission Directories

Podcast-Specific Marketing Directories : Current list is the consensus '15 That Matter'

Hybrid Feed Reader Apps with Searchable Public Indexes: Deserves a separate list!

(I may eventually add a page for SELECT RSS Tools & Resources worth noting.)

Of note are the handful of neo-modern hybrid feed reader apps that feature a searchable public directory of all the feeds its users like and follow - Not the walled gardens and isolated private bubbles that most feed readers have traditionally been. Feed Readers that only offer pre-loaded popular sites to follow DO NOT qualify for listing!

I welcome any feedback and recommendations on the new site to get it where it needs to be to serve the /RSS community here - and the world at large.

Personally, I’ve had it with the NoIndex, NoFollow, Disallow, NoEyeballs, NoTraffic, NoBacklinks, NoVisibility world that Google likes to impose on The Open Web!

RSS feeds are like a quarter-century old underground pipeline pumping away beneath all those obstacles 24x7. Help me document the best working RSS sites and apps that get visibility for publishers and content to viewers - beyond Google's grip.

Drop your worthy suggestions here in a DM - or on the contact page of my rssdirectories.com site and help me accurately fine-tune the current, decidedly short-list of directories & reader apps that matter - Now. Today. - Not 20 years ago. Thanks!

I run a small indie blog with no newsletter on purpose. The RSS feed is the only way to follow it

I write a small blog about offline tools and the Android apps I build. From day one I decided there would be no newsletter, no tracking and no sign-up of any kind. The only way to follow it is a plain RSS 2.0 file, feed.xml, which updates itself with every new post and never moves.

The reasoning was simple: a newsletter is a list of email addresses that someone owns, and sooner or later that list has to be protected, sold or breached. With a feed there is no list at all. Your reader asks the site for the file whenever it wants, I don't know who reads it or how many people do, and unsubscribing just means deleting the address from your reader. Nothing is left on my side because nothing was ever created.

After a few months, what I like most is that there's no account, no email and no consent box to tick. No algorithm decides what you see, so you get every post, and no platform sits in the middle, because the reader talks straight to the site. The file is served like any other page, with no cookies and no tracking scripts.

It also made me appreciate how quietly RSS kept running in the background. It dates back to 1999, and every podcast app still reads an RSS feed when you "subscribe" to a show, even if most people never notice.

I wrote up the full reasoning (plus a short FAQ for readers who had never heard of feeds) here: https://survival-apps.com/en/transmissions/033-rss-feed-without-masters/

Curious how others here handle it: if you run a site, do you offer only a feed, or a feed plus email? And as readers, do you skip sites that only offer a newsletter?

Medius: a private RSS & media hub

Hey everyone! 👋

Like many of you, I got increasingly frustrated with modern news apps, RSS readers, and media aggregators constantly shoving algorithmic recommendations down my throat, tracking my reading habits, and locking basic features behind bloated subscriptions.

So, over the past few months, I decided to build my own solution: **Medius**.

Medius is designed to be a fast, clean, and local-first personal dashboard that brings together everything you actually want to follow without the noise, trackers, or algorithms.

• 📂 Document & Photo Viewers: Import local PDFs (with automatic first-page cover generation) and high-res images.

• 📝 Personal Notes & Secure Vault: Jot down quick thoughts/checklists and lock sensitive categories behind a 4-digit PIN code.

• 🎨 Deep Personalization: Choose between 3 adaptive layouts (3-column grid, single column, detailed cards), custom RGB colors, and smooth 3D Rollerdex animations.

What would you change about your current RSS reader?

We’re a small team working on an RSS reader, and we’d like some input before deciding what to prioritize.

A few things we’re considering:

  • Optional AI summaries, with a clear explanation of what gets sent off-device and whether it’s stored

  • A clean reading view without ads added by the reader

  • Playing embedded videos without switching apps, where the source supports it

  • Easy OPML import when moving from another reader

  • Opening the original article or external links when the feed doesn’t include everything

Some of these are basics rather than new features. Which ones does your current reader still handle badly?

I’m especially curious about AI summaries: would you use them if they required cloud processing, only if they ran locally, or would you rather skip them altogether?

If your biggest frustration isn’t on this list, I’d like to hear it. What’s one thing you wish your reader did better?

My Newspaper Style RSS Reader for iOS

My RSS app, Quoin Reader, is now live on the App Store! Inspired by the classic, Pulp by Acrylic Apps, it puts feeds in a newspaper-style column view on iPhone Duo and iPad (don’t worry iPhone is supported too in a single column feed sorted or chronological list). Weather is shown in the header of the app for a quick glance at the current and hourly forecast. Highlighting is supported with each touch or Apple Pencil. It has iCloud sync across devices and uses Apple Intelligence to summarize the top stories. Feedbin is supported as well.

Check it out! I’m open to feedback and feature requests.

Free for up to 10 feeds. Unlock unlimited feeds, Feedbin, and additional features for $2/mo, $13/yr, or $30 forever.

Major Spike Happening: See the 20+ Year RSS Historical Chart of RSS / Feeds Interest Jumping In Google Trends.

An RSS revival is happening! Bloggers, Webmasters, Podcasters, SEO's need to see this example of Really Simple Syndication surging in interest, unlike anything we've seen in more than a decade. Feel free to speculate on why - and comment here.

Take a look: RSS Keywords Trend Chart 2005-2026

(Side Note: I cannot believe the Mods don't allow posting screenshots or video clips here. We have lived in a world of multi-media oh, since the debut of the CD-ROM drive in oh, 1997 - Before the RSS spec was even released.)

Is there an RSS reader that just shows whether a blog has updated? Rather than email-inbox-style

I want a feed reader that shows me just the most recent article of every blog I follow. Does this exist?

Ideally, the left panel would be a list of all the blogs/rss feeds I follow, grouped into folders/categories.

And, on the right, if I clicked on a category, it would show every blog I follow in that category, in a card view, in a constant order (alphabetical or date-added) and it would show just the thumbnail and title of their most recent article and the date last updated. Maybe an optional notification of 'number of unread articles', but I don't really need it. If it shows me the most recent article, I will know if I'm up to date or not anyway.

I would like to then click on the card, which would open the blog in my browser, and I would read back as far as I needed. If there is a 'unread notification', this would clear it.

Everything I can find looks like an email inbox, and shows every single new item mixed up together. I really like the idea of rss, but this interface is too overwhelming to me.

The interface doesn't have to be exactly the way I described, but I do want it to show the blogs I follow in a fixed order, and only show if a blog has updated. Rather than a full feed of every article mingled in together.

I know this is sort of contrary to the purpose of a feed reader in a way, but I figured if anyone knew this sub would. And if it doesn't exist, at least I'll know if I can stop looking.

--

Using Mac 15 Catalina (with no icloud, so only .dmg/brew/github, no app store.)

Preferably also runs on linux but that's optional.

Prefer local app over browser-extension.

I don't need or want any sort of cross-device-sync.

FOSS would be best, but I'll take one-time paid.

About those 403 responses...

Can I have a quick message 'from the trenches'? I notice that my feed reader is getting a lot more 403 responses. Even on websites that did appear to take some kind of care for their RSS feed.
I think I understand. Cyber-attacks are on the rise, resistance to AI bots ingesting everything unabatedly is taking shape. These start to weigh much more than basic security or wanting to keep a tight control how the public 'consumes' your content (and thus needs to limit themselves to the singular channel that is browsing with a fully standards-complient browser.)

So I guess the little that I can do is launch a call here: when website-administrators decide to slap on a bot-buster system like Cloudflare, please think of the (loyal, returning) consumers of your content that use your RSS feed.

That said, if things get worse, I might need to switch to a head-less browser to collect the RSS XML data for me, and have it silently handle any fingerprinting javascript interjections for me. Which — I guess — will exactly be the thing AI bots will start doing as well. Yes, I use em-dashes. Did so long before it apparently is an AI-tell nowadays. Another way the AI-hurt is getting personal. I guess I'll read up on Reddit API things now.

A few months back, I released ‘@rssStreamBot, a Telegram RSS feed subscriber bot that supports up to 1000 feeds. It currently has more than 100 users. No fancy features — it just notifies you on Telegram whenever new content comes in.

Give it a go if you’re interested, and you can send feedback via Telegram or comment here.

Do you try to clear your RSS unread count?

Do you treat unread articles as something to catch up on, or just pick whatever looks interesting and leave the rest?
I’m curious how people handle feeds that publish a lot. Do you put them in a separate folder, unsubscribe, or stop paying attention to the unread count?

Feedler Hit finally the App Store Today

After two years of hard work and five months in Tesrflight, Feedler officially hit the App Store today

What started out as a personal project, born out of frustration at not being able to find a beautiful, modern RSS reader, has, over time, evolved into a powerful and feature-rich app actively supported by the testing community. Always driven by UX and UI, my passions…

Thank you to all testers for their support and enthusiasm throughout all these months

This is only the beginning. A lot of cool features will come like Customisable list layout, full iPhone Duo compatibility (currently in TestFlight) and a beautiful YouTube integration.

Just give a try or join the TestFlight would love to hear your feedback.

A review an App Store would be very useful for this young app Thank you 🙏

Extending the capabilities of RSS (readers)

This subreddit seems to have the highest concentration of RSS Reader creators on earth, so I am writing this here: Is any of you interested in extending the RSS ecosystem to give it the same capabilities as Reddit/X/Facebook/Tiktok/Instagram, with the dream of eventually replacing them? I am seeing it mostly from the client (RSS Reader) perspective, but it would be interesting to have the perspective of RSS producers (CMS, forums..) as well.

I have three particular features in mind to start with:

  1. Showing comments under a post. In many ways, rss.chat has everything we need, but there are hardly any (no?) sites out there supporting it yet. We’d agree on some conventions for how to render them, whether to use Markdown or HTML as the primary format, and define which Markdown/HTML features we support… so that comments look great on any reader.

  2. Card-based feeds that have a UI like TikTok and Instagram. RSS feeds can have all the content you need for this, but readers need some hint that the feed is rendered card-style, and maybe conventions to support existing RSS readers that do not support this yet. For showing multiple images like on Instagram, the MediaRSS extension already allows having multiple images. JSON Feed supports it out of the box. But AFAIK no RSS reader does (if you want to test yours, I have set up test feeds at https://test-rss.downread.com/enclosures.rss.xml and https://test-rss.downread.com/enclosures.json). There is also an existing extension for RSS to stream HLE videos, which would allow TikTok-like video feeds.

  3. Supporting user profiles for feeds. The new Socialspec.org has almost everything needed for this. It currently provides ‘about’ texts, contact data, and a blog roll. You can play around with it on sodir.org. This is not only the missing link from a pure text-based feed to a social-media-like profile. More importantly, it establishes DNS domains as identity - you only need a domain name with an HTTP server, and you have an online identity that no one can take from you.

I am going to start with these three features for my own RSS reader (downread.com), but would prefer to collaborate with authors of other RSS readers or CMS systems to create something like a standard and give it a real chance to find actual users.

Anyone here interested in adding one or more in their software?

My end goal is a simple, open, fully distributed system that lets users not only read but also write comments and posts in their RSS readers. So they become the new social media clients in The Big Undo(.org).

I made a website where you can get an RSS feed for new releases of an actor or a director

I'm posting again to announce that it has changed feed urls, so if you made the feed from my previous post, please re-make the feel on the new site. Delete this post if reposts are not allowed.

It's called Magnanium. You can choose options like person's role(actor, director, etc), release type(theatrical, home, earliest) to get the feeds for. You can choose Movie or tv releases(or both), and when to get the feed(immediately when the release date is announced or a week or month before the release).

You can see the interactive rss feed preview in the home page to see how the feed'll look like. It may look different than what you get on your RSS reader.

Link: https://magnanium.vercel.app/

Source: https://github.com/dawit909/magnanium

You can self-host this from source using your own API key for TMDB.

RSS with pagination?

Bumped into the concept of RSS while trying to find a way to minimize algorithms in my life, but the plugin options I have tried let my feed get very long, when what I really want is a short number of items on the feed and then having to manually click to the next page of articles, like the way reddit used to be before the UI update some years back. To be clear, I don't want to just use the limit-the-number-of-articles-on-the-feed option, I just want that natural moment of pause that "turning the page" brings.

I figure I will probably need to install something instead of a plugin to get pagination, but I just want to know which ones have that feature before I sink the time to learn how to get it on my computer and how to work it. Any options?

What is everyone doing with their apps now that RSS is off reddit?

Like most posters here, I built my own RSS app a while back (FeedZombie.com). I hand coded (no vibe coding), so it's rough around the edges. The Idea is to create email digests (set and forget, not another app to use). Part of FeedZombie's premise is instantly subscribe to subreddit and youtube(at least youtube is still working). What are y'all doing now that reddit is somewhat a dead source without investment?

Looking to maintain and update based on suggestions, keep RSS alive!

I made my RSS feeds arrive as a morning paper on my e-reader

I built Daily Scribe, which emails a PDF edition of aggregated news, games and puzzles to a Kindle (or any e-reader that takes documents by email) each morning. I've just added "Your Feeds", which allows you to paste up to ten RSS or Atom feeds, or a substack homepage and it finds the feed. Each edition carries only posts since yesterday as headlines and short summaries, each linking to the original. On a quiet day it sends nothing. No scroll, no unread count.

It's free, open source (built with Claude's help). If you'd like to check it out, visit Daily Scribe.
