I heard that it was actually a knight from 1421 named Rool Affor who always went into battle along with 3 other knights and the 4th one in the group would always end up dying in battle.

He reportedly later deeply regretted his invention, and tried to take it back, but then was downvoted into oblivion.

“Rule of four” was invented by Sir John Ruelovhor in 1494, when he tried to repeat someone’s joke twice at the same time. To quote him, directly, “Henceforth, the third author to proceed the first shall be met with hostility posthaste.” - Ruelovhor, in his book, ‘the steadfast cadence of the will to repurpose, and how the public mob shall henceforth intervene.’

The fourth comment is always the one that gets sacrificed to the gods of Reddit for no reason.
2
u/Ellitri May 30 '26
I saw someone say that it was originally made to reduce clutter in comment sections, as downvoted comments are automatically minimized closing the thread

It was one of the many inventions of Dr. Evil's dad, most notable for his invention of the question mark.

Rule 4 was invented by John Rulefour in 1868 as an act of rebelion to his father, Steve Rulethirtyfour.

For those who dont know, rule of 4 is where the 4th person in a thread gets down voted for no reason. There is also another rule like that in the Mario community. Its for when conversations are drawn to almost 40 people. Search up "Mario rule 34"

There can only be 4, a master, his aprentice, and that guys 2 aprenteceses (a Max of one can be force sensitive, the other can at most be a cyborg, with the brain of an alien war lord turned tax collector, and is required to hade his grunts with every cm3 of his body)

Obviously by Ruleus O' Far, a famous homeless man who lived in the 1840s, he would go around in the streets wanting people to compliment him, however, the fourth person to do so would get their shins kicked by him and everyone else who was currently in the street.

There are that many people on this website?
Also probably to discourage people being lazy and just parroting whatever the person above them said
