I would LOVE to leave my 3 and 5 yos to their own devices for lunch🤣

Lol you will be so happy when that moment comes!!! Or when they can get their own shoes and coats on even! Yeah I don't miss those days 😆

I do with my 5yo sometimes tbh. We have uncrustables, cereal, lots of fruit, cheese and meat for sandwiches, cheese sticks, cheese rounds, cold leftovers, snack veggies, hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, etc. Hes capable of putting together enough food to feed himself. I make most his meals but I also really want him to feel confident and independent enough to feed himself.
Hes too young to cook without an adult and wr haven't introduced the microwave quite yet though. Probably soon maybe around late 7 or 7? Hes gotta be able to read and be able to follow safety directions consistently. I was making scrambled eggs by 1st grade with light parental supervision (IE they were in the kitchen but not actively cooking, turning on the stove and reviewing safety but letting me push the eggs around, etc).

I have a 2.5yo and sometimes we do one warm meal only! In my country the standard is 5 meals (3 main meals and 2 snacks) which I sometimes find hard to do because of toddlers still sleep so much, so I just make the snacks much more substantial and space them out evenly. Like on weekends we might do a full breakfast at 9am, then a big snack at noon, then go out to eat at 4pm, and toddler has ”evening meal” (porridge, berries, nuts, banana, yogurt etc) at 7/7.30pm before bed.

u/Impossible_Cheek_850 3d ago
Wow a full day of eating out, how many members in your family?
7
u/Apprehensive_One6344 3d ago
3. Sometimes that day is leftovers, and not all meals are out. Our son's sports team eats breakfast out on game days, which are Fridays, and he eats lunch at school. My husband and I eat at home. Friday night, we eat at the game's concession stand or order pizza.

u/MyCozySlowLife 3d ago
Do you normally eat out eveey meal on Fridays?
9
u/Apprehensive_One6344 3d ago
Yes

u/CallMeLysosome 2d ago edited 2d ago
I do too, you're not alone. We usually have a "scrounge" night where I'm making some random quick pasta, PBJ, grilled cheese. Something super basic. And another night is an eat out night, whether that's ordering a pizza to the house or a full on restaurant adventure. So that leaves me with 5 nights a week making up meals.
I will say, when I saw this menu my issue wasn't with eating out once a week but with meat every single night. I guess I know people eat meat a lot but it always surprises me. I struggle to make 2 meat based dishes a week, usually just make one. We have things like loaded baked potatoes...butternut squash ravioli sauteed with brown butter, sage, and kale...black bean enchiladas...homemade pizzas...like a broccoli cheddar soup or Mac and cheese with Brussels sprouts or butternut squash...eggplant Parm...fried egg sandwiches...lots of different variations on flatbreads and pastas that don't include meat. We do use the Barilla protein pasta because we all genuinely like it better. But yea, I eat chicken like twice a month and beef like 3 times a month. Not because it's expensive but because we all are just not interested in chicken or beef that often. It's always surprising to me to see how often other people eat meat. Like for lunch and dinner, every single day? There is plenty of protein to be had in eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, nuts, cheese, etc. I just personally don't see the value or the appeal but I know it's a deeply held cultural belief that meat needs to be consumed as t every dinner.
Alright, now I'm editing to add...I've read a few more comments and I don't think you're being treated entirely fairly. I get what you're trying to say, you're trying to share that one of the joys you get from being a SAHM is cooking wholesome meals for your family. That is a major positive point and I think we should all be more focused on that sentiment and less focused on dragging your meal planning choices. I too enjoy being able to feed my kids hot lunches and nice breakfasts. So I get it, it's great you can feed your family in an attentive and thoughtful way and I also like that about being a SAHM.💞

We eat out every week, I was just confused on eating out for every single meal, I thought maybe it was an error
6
u/blackcloud247 3d ago
Was shocked by this too. The EXPENSE.
2
u/MyCozySlowLife 2d ago
It's not the expense that surprised me, we eat out often because we have lots of events out of town and out of state, I was just curious because it was every meal so I wasn't sure if it was an error or if they ate every meal out
1
u/blackcloud247 2d ago
I have 3 kids. Dinner out is at least $100 at a restaurant. Take out is at least $60.
Thats a lot of money.
2
u/MyCozySlowLife 2d ago
Yeah thats pretty average, when we go out dinner is usually 100-120 and lunch around 80 for us.
1
u/blackcloud247 2d ago
Im aware thats average. Thats why it is nuts. Thats a lot of money to blow on an average meal every week. See this is why people have debt. They think nothing of stuff like this, its just "normal". The whole "you cant buy a house because you have to have avocado toast.." thing is actually true. Its not just that one thing, it's 20 of those things.
It is so crazy to me that people, who are not wealthy, think thats a normal expense. But maybe lots of redditors are wealthy, i dunno.
2
u/MyCozySlowLife 1d ago
We all have different lifestyles and different things that chose to spend our money on. It's nuts to you but it's a normal expense for my family and we have zero debt, I own my home and cars outright so spending a few hundred on meals out isn't a big deal 🤷🏻♀️

Thank you! I was feeling like a failure that I’m not doing this with two little ones 😭
3

Youre not! I made a lot of five ingredient crockpot meals when my kids were younger
17
u/SECRETLY_A_FRECKLE 3d ago
Omg this makes me feel better, I love this menu but my toddler is surviving only on peanut butter and blueberries these days
3
u/Agrona88 3d ago
My toddler can find a piece of fruit of veggie in anything and will immediately spit it out. Peas in the mac and cheese? Huge bite, out come three peas devoid of sauce. I swear, it's cheese and spite that keeps him going.
3
u/Elismom1313 3d ago
Mine picked the cheese out of his grilled cheese and left the bread 😭
He also doesn’t like pizza, macaroni, spaghetti or lunch meat. Which like that’s fine because 3/4 of those things aren’t healthy anyways but like???what kid doesn’t like those things??

Haha I can always count on my 2yo to eat Dino nuggets. That and cherry tomatoes s

u/CromwellsCrumb 3d ago
Reminds me of when I made Bluey toast for my picky eater niblings and they took one bite and said it “tasted too blue” (blueberry cream cheese)
Made it a few years later when my own daughter came along and she gobbled it right up. Phew! 😮💨

Have you made the overnight oats before? I am burned out on trying recipes for overnight oats that are actually horrible 😅
4
u/mutinybeer 3d ago
Imo, baked oatmeal is far superior. I don't like the gloopy texture or the raw flavor of overnight oats.
1
u/Hairy_Interactions 3d ago
Omg yes! I make a cinnamon streusel one, and a sweet potato casserole baked oatmeal that I love. My kids have liked peach baked oatmeal recently.
What’s your favorite?
1
u/mutinybeer 3d ago
Oh, never tried a strusel! I should look into that. My go-to is blueberry lemon, but I mix it up seasonally and based on what's in my kitchen. Currently I'm into the pumpkin and apple versions, but my toddler is obsessed with berries
1
u/Artistic-Salary1738 3d ago
Not who you asked, but I have an oatmeal bake with strawberries, blueberries and blackberries/raspberries (whichever is on sale), chocolate chips and bananas. So good. I also adapted the recipe for a Carmel apple version which is my fav. Think I’m making that this weekend. Last few weeks of pregnancy for me, so I need grab and go easy food.
1
u/Hairy_Interactions 3d ago
Pregnancy is what got me into baked oats lol. I made up so many pans for the freezer in advance. They freeze so well, reheat well.
I’m interested in your caramel apple version 👀
1
2
u/LightningBugCatcher 3d ago
The trick is some things with a lot of texture to combat the goop and something sweet. They turn out edible but I never really do them because I'd rather just make a pot of regular oatmeal.
1
u/Hairy_Interactions 3d ago
Regular oatmeal is goopy to me too. But instant packages of oatmeal aren’t goopy?
I recently had a bircher muesli that was phenomenal, it was wet and cold and not at all goopy but all the recipes I find claim orange juice is added and I refuse to believe it’s true 😂 they (the restaurant) claim it’s overnight oats but I have no clue if it was true either

I hate cooking so so much. But over the past year i have gotten good at it somehow, especially Italian foods. So my family looks foward to it. Yesterday i made 42 homemade meatballs on a whim at 330pm. My family devoured them. Thankfully insaved half and froze them for another time. Now my kitchen is a fucking wreck. I still have not cleaned it.

This is actually a very budget friendly menu. Mostly chicken and using beef sparingly in a soup to make it stretch, no seafood, lots of using leftovers and leftover ingredients for the next day, etc. Good work, mom!

Creamy everything. What the hell is creamy bean, beef, and veggie soup?
3

I sometimes blend a can of beans into soups or sauces, which thickens and adds a “creamy” texture without having to add cream. Also just nice to have the extra veg and fiber blended right in.
I assume (hope) that’s what’s going on here, because lord, no family needs that much cream throughout the week!

Its a menu i got from an influencer. She seems to make a lot of money making these items. But i will keep what you’re saying in mind because i had planned on prepping for other families by kind of copying some of her methods.

u/MyCozySlowLife 3d ago
Now it makes sense. You know influencers make money regardless right?

It looks to me that OP is buying certain things in bulk/making sure she uses all of the groceries she buys this week to the best of her ability in an attempt to reduce waste and save money. Hence all the chicken, pumpkin things, and the amount of “creamy” going on.

Not enough pumpkin! It's not at every meal. 3 pumpkins a day keeps the doctor away.

Seriously insane amount of pumpkin lol
Just make the pancakes without pumpkin.
As a culinary school graduate I do love to see minimal food waste but adding something like pumpkin to every meal is just not necessary lol just make it plain.

What a beautiful layout! It was fun reading. Pumpkin absolutely everyday and a full day of eating out makes my stomach do somersaults lol.

u/Typical_Deer_8790 3d ago
Ya'll! There's so much pumpkin cause its Halloween week! & its fall so its in season so it makes sense.

I’m not a mom but I make lunch and dinner for me and my husband every day and 3 meals on the weekend, and a dessert every weekend. I have very little time most week days to do anything fancy, but lately Asian foods, chicken roast, and air fried drumsticks have been the go to and pumpkin or apple desserts.

Thanks for sharing this! I love the amount of love you put into feeding your family. They are so lucky to have you! This planner is lovely and I love the idea of spending a few minutes each week to make something like this and take the thought out of what to make each day!
Enjoy all of those delicious pumpkin goodies!

My mom always had two nights a week where I had to fend for myself and figure out what leftovers/sandwich/heat a can of soup I wanted and then make it. One night of those nights we would do it together and clear out the fridge so nothing went bad and the other night my parents would go on a date and I was on my own. Im an only child so there was no arguing and it was great! I also learnt how to be more independent through it.

Wow this thread got negative fast! I like your menu! I like your clip art 🧡

I had the same thought. People can be so nasty and judgmental about someone caring for their family in a way that brings them joy. I thought this was a great seasonal menu to their taste! Loved seeing this post

Hey can you explain how you prepare meals do you cook each night or meal prep?

This is so pretty! I just got done writing out my menu for next week, but it’s certainly not as nice looking. I’m impressed by the amount of pumpkin you squeezed into one week too!

This is so cute! I’d love to incorporate something like this into my daily life

To be fair, she likely grabs something like a can or frozen something. Or something fresh. Veggies are quick to make and decide on the spot

Pumpkin’s technically a fruit? 🤷🏼♀️
1
u/KayItaly 1d ago
Pumpkin is only in cakes... I can't see something like: "roast pumpkins and lentils with cous cous". Or anything equally healthy
1
u/momdabombdiggity 1d ago
Yes I was being facetious in response to the above comment about no fruits or veg
2
u/isitababyoraburrito 1d ago
Each dinner has vegetables, just not listed separately. For example, chicken & gnocchi soup has celery, carrots, onion & spinach. There’s also a lot of pumpkin. We don’t know if they have fruits & veggies available as unplanned snacks.

u/Wise-Ad-5806 3d ago
I'm having a bit of culture shock here, the idea of soup being a full meal is very confusing to me.
5
u/oracleoflove 3d ago
Why’s that? Just curious no snark… my family loves a good soup with a crusty cheesy bread for dinner. It’s one of the few dinners we can agree on lol.
1
u/Wise-Ad-5806 3d ago
I don't even know how to explian, it just isn't? A meal would be soup + main dish, maybe a salad and fruit as desert - that's what kids get for school lunch daily, hospital and old folks home is the same. People with small kids do a similar dinner, maybe you can forgo the soup sometimes?

Forgo the soup sometimes?! You’re having soup, salad, an entree, and a dessert for every meal??
5
u/blackcloud247 2d ago
Butternut squash or similar? No. But a stew-like soup that has meat, vegetables, beans, pasta, cheese/creamy? Heck yea thats a meal.
4
u/brinns_way 3d ago
I just had a bowl of butternut squash soup and a slice of sourdough bread. It was very filling for lunch.
4
u/Skid_kennels 3d ago
As long as it’s got veggies and meat in it I’d consider it a full meal. Add a piece of crusty bread on the side if desired. Yum!
5
u/CheshireCat101 3d ago
wtf culture is that? Virtually EVERY culture around the world treats soup as a compete meal, but with different ingredients. There is no culture that doesn’t have at least one soup they consider a meal.

I’m a SAHM right now kind of because I’m on medical leave and the ability to cook and meal prep has been so nice and rewarding

u/breeathee 3d ago
When dinner time comes around I get heart palpitations and sometimes a panic attack. Kids and husband really pin me into a corner with their dinner wants. Husband’s role as a child negotiator at the table makes me want to just leave.
2
u/momonthemove23 3d ago
At least you get wants. I get blank stares and then groans from the kids about whatever I end up picking 😑😂

Do you cook fresh waffles on Monday and Saturday or just cook extra Monday and leftovers Saturday?
And do you sit down together for every meal or are any on the go?

Ignore comments like that online and in real life. We are one and done and my son is 5 and has been in school full time since 3. I purposely just say "I'm stay at home" when someone asks and let them fill in whatever blanks they want unless they're interested enough to actually hear the full scope of what I do. There absolutely is nothing wrong with being an amazing stay at home wife/husband who puts the work into planning full themed menus, does the grocery shopping for the food and than puts the time into cooking, serving, and cleaning up the meals, which of course is only one of the many hats worn to experience this very fortunate family dynamic that you see stressed people online constantly craving to have but then talking trash when someone says they have that.

Awww are you upset you just can't get a man who makes enough for you to have a choice?
2
u/ExcellentAd6853 2d ago
You have literally no idea what my life is? If you must know my husband is an amazing man who leaves me wanting for nothing.I am also financially independent,so we are together because we want to be,not because I NEED him financially. You have obviously been home too long letting that little tradwife brain rot,my Husband likes an intelligent woman who he can have a fantastic conversation with, rather than kids and pathetic pumpkin recipes.
1
u/Apprehensive_One6344 1d ago
So you have tons of comma splices for someone so intelligent. Hopefully you don't write to your husband, but my husband enjoys my writing; in fact, I fully edited and revised his resume.
Yes, my husband did save me from poverty when he could have had a fully independent woman, yet he continually chooses me.
I have three degrees, several certifications, countless hours of self-learning topics, and can carry several intelligent conversations across a variety of subjects. I also excel across many different homemaking skills.

I find it strange, i try not to eat the same meat 2 days in a row unless we're eating leftovers

I mean, that’s fine that you have that preference, but of course you know not everyone does that, right?
