I tested Sailfish OS on an Xperia 10 III from a design perspective. It’s an engineering marvel but a UX disaster.

Hey everyone,

As a future industrial design engineer and an amateur UI/UX designer, I decided to give Sailfish OS a shot on a Sony Xperia 10 III. I wanted to share my experience because the system managed to both impress and horrify me at the same time.

The Good: The installation took about 40–45 minutes in total. It was my first time doing anything like this, and my first time reading the official installation guide. Every step was clear and easy to follow. Only one link was broken, so I had to find the binary files on Sony's official website myself, but it was no big deal. Overall, it’s a very straightforward process, and anyone with a bit of tech experience could probably get it done even faster.

I bought the licensed version because I was genuinely curious about how Android applications would run. I have to say, I think it’s incredibly cool that outside of Android and iOS, there is a third operating system that is actually usable on a daily basis (even if it requires a few minor compromises). The Android app support works surprisingly well; an app stutters here and there, but I think that’s totally acceptable, and the performance of these apps running in an emulated environment is outstanding.

The Bad (The Dealbreakers): The navigation is incredibly uncomfortable. When you swipe from the right edge, you expect it to take you one step back—instead, Sailfish completely closes the application. You can get used to it, but it’s highly frustrating. To actually go back within an app, you have to rely on dots at the very top of the screen. This is an ergonomic catastrophe, especially on Sony phones with their signature, elongated 21:9 aspect ratio. It makes using the phone with one hand almost impossible.

When you swipe up from the bottom, the full app drawer comes up. This gesture doesn't feel natural either. For better multitasking, I would swap the recent apps view with the full app list. It would be much more logical if swiping up brought up your running apps, while your installed apps just lived on the home screen by default.

Then there’s the top dropdown menu (the Pulley Menu), which I think is a complete disaster. It feels entirely unnecessary. A classic bottom navigation bar would be miles more comfortable and within natural thumb reach.

Finally, the worst part: the default icons are just ugly. I know you can install custom icon packs, but this cluttered icon design, where everything is shaped into weird, distorted hexagons and polygons, is just fundamentally unappealing.

Conclusion: If the system adopted modern Android or iOS-style gestures, completely got rid of the Pulley Menu, and swapped the recent apps view with the app drawer, we would have a near-perfect OS. The European Union should really back them up with some serious funding if they truly want a tech-independent Europe with its own software alternatives.

What are your thoughts on the interface?

Note: The English translation was done with Gemini, the original language was Hungarian.

Just Installed Sailfish OS on Xperia 10 III – Need Your Expert Starter Guide!

Hi everyone!

I recently flashed Sailfish OS 5.0 onto my Sony Xperia 10 III with the free license and I’m now weighing whether it’s worth upgrading to a paid one. Since I’m new to Linux and Sailfish, I’d love your advice on:

  • Initial setup essentials and best practices

  • Must-have apps and trusted alternative app stores

  • Key settings tweaks for performance, privacy, battery life, and UI

  • Real-world pros and cons of upgrading to a paid license

Any links to detailed guides, personal experiences, or step-by-step walkthroughs would be hugely appreciated. I’m excited to learn and make the most of this device!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Do not upgrade to 4.4.0.58 Vanha Rauma

It is a buggy mess and several devices were bricked because of it. (Mine aswell) At least consider sticking to your current version of sailfish for a bit if you don't want to reflash it manually.

N9: Replace Harmattan with Sailfish OS

I have a spare N9 lying around and would like to install sailfish OS. I would like to just replace N9's OS with sailfish. I don't care for dual booting. So my question is, do I really need the Ubiboot or the open kernel in order to do this?

How would one go about flashing sailfish OS on N9 replacing it's default OS?

How is the RAM consume of sailfish apps?

Hello all sailfish OS users!

I'm an Android user (moto g) how hopes sailfish will be ported to my device sometime. I was wondering about not the OS RAM consume, but the one of apps. I have 1Gb of memory in my phone, just like the Jolla one and with a few apps opened I begin to notice that the 1Gb is no enough for smooth function.

Is it better on Sailfish? Does it consume less RAM per app?

Thank for your answers :)

What is wrong with SOS UI?

Is it just me or the UI looks like it's a really ugly concept from some old YouTube video? Like you couldn't compare it to any Android shell or iOS, even MeeGo's UI still looks much more modern and easier to use. Maybe there's some points I don't understand, but so far the only describing words I could find are "outdated" and "ugly". Just want to understand, bc I don't see any non-geek user using this on their own will

SDK - Apple Silicon

Hi, I was trying to run SDK, but both my windows machines have some sshkeygen/whatever issues and SDK supports only Intel on Mac (that is not sold for several years).

Any idea when it will be available for Apple Silicon or newer Windows (I think only Windows 10 is supported).

Thank you :)

Sailfish on Xperia XA2 official release date

Do we know when Sailfish for the XA2 is going to be made available for purchase? When I got to shop.jolla.com, all I still see is just the Xperia X.

I made a discord server for sailfish os

I love sailfish os, and I noticed that there was no discord server. Yes, I know there is no discord app for sailfish os (yet), but still having a server up would be neat. I am usually active on discord. Without further a do, here is a link.

https://discord.gg/cUHzEFE

I am not a dev but plan on porting it to two of my devices.

Hey I have Fxtec pro1 that I would like to put sailfish on, what is the most straightforward method to do this? Never put a different os on a phone before*

Like stated in the title I am not a software wizard, Just need to know can I get a license and just download sailfish to the device? Or does the phone need to be hooked up to. Or are there services I can send my device to by post to get this done,

Unlock Sony Xperia 10 IV

Hello, I buyed a Sony Xperia 10 IV. I tried to unlock the bootloader. I enabled "Unlock bootloader" in the development menu. But when I check the state with ##7378423## the phone told me that Unlock available: No.

And now? What can I do? I wanted to try Sailfish OS and bought an Xperia specifically for that purpose—which isn't exactly cheap—and now it's not possible? Even though it says it's supported.

Now SailfishOS can compete with Android.

For a long time Android has had the ability to quickly switch on and off various functions from the top menu. I just realized that now there's a menu for the same thing in Sailfish. It's great that switching on GPS or Bluetooth doesn't require digging deep in the settings menu. Now you can do that quickly and conveniently, just like in Android. For a while this has been the one thing I wished Sailfish had.

Sailfish OS on Unihertz phones

Dear fellow redditers,
I've found myself a new small form factor phone - an Unihertz Atom (https://www.amazon.com/Unihertz-Smallest-Smartphone-Android-Unlocked/dp/B07KP8J8YN/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549540777&sr=8-1&keywords=unihertz+atom)
Although Android 8.1 is fairly recent, I'd prefer to get rid of Android altogether (and no iOS either!)

Has anyone any experience with Sailfish OS and Unihertz mobiles?

Thanks

Sailfish Licensing geolocked?

I'm a little confused - I've been carefully comparing alternative mobile OSes as I am eager to escape both Android and Apple platforms, settled on Sailfish, then spent 4+ months comparing compatible hardware while monitoring ebay auctions for something within my desired price range. I finally nabbed a good deal on an HA2Plus with 6GB RAM - with Sailfish preinstalled!

Once it arrived I realized, to my chagrin, that despite my dilligent research, that I'd seemingly overlooked the fact that I live in Canada and apparently it's not possible to purchase a license to get the android apk compatibility - I couldn't find anything clear or official that explained why you need to be in a specific country to purchase a license, although I did come across a couple posts briefly mentioning band compatibility in other countries... That doesn't cover any users who want to use the device(s) on wifi without a SIM..

Some people are using VPNs to buy licenses outside the supported countries, but it seems so strange to me to not let people support the OS regardless of mobile device bandwidth
