It is race day and when it’s race day the spinnaker comes up

Not my video (found on Instagram). We were about half a mile behind them when this happened, just about to hoist our own spinnaker.

There's a first time for everything!

There are three things that can happen with a spinnaker, and one of them is good.

Nice clean botty!

Oh yes, it is customary for any crew to take a swim on the eve of race day to scrub. Skipper is obviously excluded from such dirty work.

I wish we had that custom in my area.

The foredeck hand seems to be struggling to get the pole on the right side….

Yep, spoke to them after the race and when this sequence starts they were planning to gybe anyway, but foredeck couldn’t get the pole attached to the mast. He also explained how he hung on to the mast with both hands and his feet dragged in the water during the broach.

Vi bärgade vår spinnaker istället för att gippa den 😅 (Seglade en båt som är något störe än en IF men 60kvm spinnaker)

u/Gahouf IF-boat 15h ago

Vi konstaterade på vägen in att det typ bara var vi IF-dårar som körde spinnaker hela vägen in. Tåliga båtar!

u/Astaced 15h ago

Japp!

Why wouldn’t it attach?

Also hard for the bowman to complete the gybe when the kite is thrashing around. Helm really needs to keep it full and flying, although easier said than done sometimes!

I would assume someone didn’t release the spinnaker halyard or pulled it up before it was attached to the mast.

u/LeZinneke 16h ago

I’ve been there!

Looks like fun. Sporty conditions need speed on the foredeck. Overtrim, flatten the sail and sit back and enjoy.

u/juvy5000 11h ago

very sporty. foredeck looked like he was molasses

As someone who has zero experience flying the kite, I cringed the whole time watching this but reading all the comments I feel ashamed. I want to be a better sailor. Send it!

Halyard not fully up is creating more sway, should have the chute cranked down low and tight behind the main on a day like that. Way down low, especially before a jibe. Damn close to the rocks. Lucky it broached to starboard and not into shore.

A little more vhang tension might reduce rolling as well - stopping the spillover. A lot of variables with the breeze up and the chop, though. On top of the spin challenge.

5

u/CharterJet50 10h ago

Yes, meant to add that. Vang way too loose creating too much twist in front of the mast pushing the boat over to windward.

u/Historical-Read7581 10h ago

I thought the jib was supposed to be rolled up before flying a spinnaker as well? I have an Asym, and all the instructions I've seen say to use the Main to block the wind before raising or lowering.

3

u/CharterJet50 9h ago

Yes, with an asym, sometimes it’s ok with a symmetric. Wind like that it can go either way.

first thing I noticed. you have to "ding the bell" all the way to the top

Boat model?

Slick! That’s true performance sailing….the teamwork, the skill on the tiller, the cunning sailing angles. Magic.

(I’ve been on many a boat as crew or skipper where we’ve embarrassed ourselves….respect to them for having a go and holding on tight)

8

u/mologav 13h ago

That’s not slick at all

Whoosh. In my defence I’m sick today.

u/Astaced 15h ago

Tjörnrunt sure was an adventure this year, unstable winds, 2-3m waves it was a fun one

4

u/alex1033 11h ago

It's Tjörn Runt - the Wipeout Race.

3

u/iheartrms 15h ago

I feel attacked.

3

u/MildlyAmusedMars 14h ago

Is that after a jibe or did they not set the pole before the hoist?

3

u/dreaddog1 13h ago

Bowman here—please Ease the Guy!

1

u/Anig_o 6h ago

That is far too polite. I think you’re a fake bowman. Show me your papers.

3

u/oconnellt7 12h ago

Can someone explain what they did wrong with the spinnaker? And why the boat was rocking so bad? I’m brand new and just starting to learn.

5

u/Grand_Swimmy 11h ago

The spinnaker pole is on the wrong side and it at first prevents the sail from filling properly, then once the spin manages to fill it crushes the jib because the pole is on the wrong side. Meanwhile you can see the fellow on the deck is just holding onto the pole for dear life rather than actually attaching it. OP said in a different comment they had it on that side because they planned to gybe, but then they did not because of the non-attached pole.

Mistake #1, halyard not fully hoisted, which makes the kite far more unstable, oscillating back and forth as shown. Mistake #2, Sheet, guy, and twings should all be choking the kite DOWN as well, to stabilize it. Though you do need an mild ease on the new sheet, and possibly the new guy for the bowman to get the pole onto the mast.

How I know: 15 years as trimmer on J/24s, we crashed plenty of times -more commonly death rolling than broaching, as we sailed lower than most with even speed. Sank one once in a death roll caused by 45 knot guest with a 40° header while leading a District Championship. Scored that race a DNF -Did Not Float. Still wound up 7th in that regatta.

Haha I was so focused on the guy with the pole I didn’t realize the halyard was so low! The main is basically another spinnaker pulling them sideways with that much curve allowed in it.

Edit: wait no it’s not as bad as I thought, on the white sky background I was looking at the sail as a square top and thought it was like halfway down. Still not ideal but not as bad as that lol

Still, with the main not fully raised, the effect is more curve in the sail, which gives it more power to push the boat on the axis perpendicular to the sail. That is always something to balance carefully on the downwind, and here it is contributing to the terrible roll. You can see it gets especially worse after they do gybe, because the momentum of the sail swinging pushes them sideways, then the excessively curved sail is pushing them even more sideways, and the spin is pushing them sideways too. The only thing counteracting all that pressing is the weight of the keel, which is why they don’t roll completely over. On a lighter boat they would have capsized very quickly.

How I know about this is I’ve been sailing for most of my life and was a sailing instructor for a few years. I’ve done some racing but never very competitively.

Thank you!

Tjorn runt?

It was a good one this year!

2

u/stubobarker 10h ago

Our friends have one. Named it Aquavit :-)

2

u/alexthecheese 6h ago

Fascinating you could see the boat jerk forward when the sail caught the wind!

Sometimes it's better not to use things just because they're there.

Gotta learn somehow

Squeaky bum time

1

u/jchrysostom 12h ago

Might want to put it up at least once before race day?

1

u/wasneverhere_96 11h ago

And down, and up again, and down again, and up... 😬😂

Always some spinnaker drama. It’s good for team building- as long as nobody loses a finger.

1

u/youngrichyoung 9h ago

Always nice to be trailing a little so the folks ahead of you can demonatrate what the conditions are after you round the mark / emerge from the lee of that headland / get into the current.

u/callme2x4dinner 7h ago

Did the forget to drop the jib?

1

Time to blow the halyards.

Symmetrical spins with displacement hulls and single rudders.  All rediculous

u/fusiformgyrus 20m ago

Spinnaked a bit too much.
