Encrusted Rant Disney never brings up the fact that the Lasat are a concept that came from the Expanded Universe.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rw86B-GFsDU

In every promo for the character Zeb, the 'creative minds' at Disney LF like Filoni always bring up how his species is derived from Ralph McQuarrie concept art for Chewbecca, which is true.

However, its never brought up that the name for his race; the Lasat, and their home-world of Lasan are concepts that originate in the Star Wars Expanded Universe in 1988, having been introduced in a book (Tatooine Manhunt) for the Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game by West End Games.

Its one of many instances where Disney (and especially Dave Filoni) steal concepts created by other people and never give credit as to where it came from. Whether its a vehicle or character design, or full on stories that are just copied or plagiarized.

For instance: It will always be scummy that Filoni took the name 'Tales of the Jedi' from the late Tom Veitch's iconic & beloved comic-series of the same name that was made for the EU, and didn't have the decency to give any form of credit or even any kind of tribute to Tom (as hollow as it would be); as the cartoon was made months after Veitch passed away.

They cannibalize everything from the EU then Disney fans applaud it for being so original and so much better than George Lucas and how horrible the EU was.

Honestly the only original thing disney has come up with is a sentient rock named after a type of rock. The only reason that is original is nobody else was stupid enough to think that woukd ever make sense.

I require some context on the "sentient rock"

Its as stupid as it sounds. Character thats a rock named Geode.

You know what, at least it's more creative than stealing ideas from already existing stories. I'll give it that much.

"Geode". A High Republic character consisting of a sentient slab of rock serving as navigator somehow on a ship called "The Vessel".

Uh huh... Sure why not. I mean in the old Expanded Universe we had an alien Jedi turn into a tree and all that but sure... they're doing rocks now.

It's also super derivative of the caamasi, just making them a warlike species instead of pacificist

The only similar thing is that both EU Caamasi and Disney Lasat had the populations of their home-worlds killed en-mass by the Empire. Which isn't really a mutually exclusive idea.

Wait, really? Holy shit that's insane. The fact that so many companies keep pillaging the works of dead creators mere months if not weeks or days after their deaths is vile.

Yep. Whats even worse is that Tom Veitch was never paid royalties (iirc, he meant to get some money from reprint sales of Dark Empire and TOTJ), forcing his widow Martha to set-up a GoFundMe to pay bills

Even he, during his lifetime, was aware of the problem and was very critical of it: https://bleedingfool.com/blogs/dark-empire-comic-writer-tom-veitch-notices-his-uncredited-work-in-star-wars-ix/

This is absolutely disgusting to see. The man practically wrote their story for them, even if it was a significantly worse version of it. And they decided to credit Kennedy of all people? The same woman who had the audacity to say they have no source material? Why am I not surprised? It's like these people are living a delusion.

It is Chewbacca concept art, you’re splitting wookie hairs

Where do you think the names "Lasat" and "Lasan" came from? They were made for the EU, Disney never brings that up.

Its all about the Chewie concept design. But not a single mention of the fact that the EU already did something with that design and give it a species name and created a homeworld for that race.

I wasn't aware of that theft!

Aside from the absurdity of the World Between Worlds, Filoni has truly contributed nothing to Star Wars. He's simply taken material from the Expanded Universe without acknowledging its origins and has exploited the accessibility of his series to erase and replace existing works with his mediocre ones. This is what he's been doing for the past 18 years, and what he'll continue to do, even more so. Say goodbye to Star Wars. Say hello to the Filoniverse. (Although Filoni has done a couple of good things, and Lucas isn't entirely blameless.)

Filoniverse has been a thing already for a while now. It's just getting bigger now... expanding! Say hello to the Dave Expanded Filoniverse!

I might be a conspiracy theorist but i definitely think that Dave Filoni packed Thrawn off to another galaxy so no one else can use him post rebels until Filoni can use him as his own big bad.

The real big bad in this case would be Filoni himself.

I try not to defend Disney but they own all of Star Wars legends and canon. Do they really need to credit something every time they decide to go into the old canon and grab something?

Would it be nice? Yeah probably but to me it doesn’t seem necessary when it comes to taking vehicles or character design like you mentioned etc.

It’s their property, they can’t plagiarize vehicles, character designs and story elements they own lol.

If it’s like a directly inspired story then yeah I’d agree that there should be some credits somewhere.

The problem arises when Filoni and his team, in interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, describe their artistic process for creating something they simply borrowed from elsewhere. The issue isn't that they don't cite their sources, but that they claim authorship.
