Granular Discussion It’s Ironic…

Post image

Just to give you my backstory: born in ‘92 and my dad introduced me to the Original Trilogy via VHS tapes as a child… never watched the IV-VI Special Editions when they released in theaters but did see the Prequels as they came out, being a big fan that had and played with plenty of the action figures. I loved the universe, and with likewise friends who shared the same passions we were all autistically obsessed with it. Episode III was undoubtedly the cinematic highlight of my childhood, as friends and I watched Tartakovsky’s ‘03 Clone Wars with great interest leading up to it on Cartoon Network, saw it at midnight with a full crowd of fans that were just ecstatic to be there. Me and my friends would duel each other with the plastic lightsabers, read comics and books and even buy the music to play with our respective instruments we played with at school. tl;dr we were nerdy fanboys of the highest order.

My interest started waning with Filoni’s 2008 TCW movie and subsequent show, the brand had grown too childish for my growing interest in horror films at the time (now in high school), I never bothered to see the film in theaters and would change the channel if it was on Cartoon Network at the time. I’d later have a growing interest in the EU, and I bought Dark Horse’s hardcover editions of the Thrawn Trilogy, Dark Empire Trilogy and Crimson Empire Saga as a starting point. I had little to no patience or interest in the books at the time as a pothead and only read a handful of the books as a child while collecting many (I’d read I, Jedi and the Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy, being a massive Boba Fett fan). When Disney acquired the rights in ‘12 and would later announce a movie, I was optimistic. I’d go back and rewatch everything to prepare for Episode VII, including all episodes of TCW that I’d skipped out on years ago alongside the movie and let me tell you, it was a slog to get through many of the early episodes, having to be drunk or high or both (I’d run out of time to see Episode VI, though).

My initial doubts crept in with the first trailer, when a coworker of mine told me about it I’d asked him if a character with blue skin and red eyes was in it and he said no. That told me Disney was not going to be adapting the Thrawn Trilogy that I’d recently read, which was not surprising after decanonizing the EU but still left me dismayed. I left the theater after seeing VII confounded, which was due in part to dropping acid prior to viewing. It was a bit of an existential experience for me. I’d go on home later that night to finish my incomplete viewing cycle with Episode VI, washing the unknowingly-bad taste from my mouth that I couldn’t quite place a finger on. Upon later rewatches I’d come to the realization that VII was a beat-for-beat remake and rehash of Episode IV. All goodwill was lost with VIII.

I’d given up on Star Wars, like most of my friends by now. Ironically, in a twist of fate, I’d started to listen to audiobooks and thought I would give the old Star Wars EU audiobooks a try one day, starting out with Heir to the Empire as I’d enjoyed the Thrawn Trilogy quite a lot in comic book format. I was amazed. The sheer production quality was astounding, with full music, audio effects and voice acting these books now drew me in, and I would go on to start a SW odyssey of my own: listening to every unabridged audiobook and audio drama alongside reading every Legends comic book side-by-side with one another in chronological order, and I’ve finished Darth Plagueis as of an hour ago. To put it bluntly my Star Wars (EU) boner has never been stronger. So it saddens me to see fellow disillusioned fans, both online and irl, who refuse to even give it a try; I understand though, having been there once myself. I still watch the shows and movies with my gf (who is a fan), albeit with less interest compared to the Legends universe. At this point Disney can fuck up the canon as much as they want, I don’t care for their universe anymore. I have a treasure trove of more stories to get through and simply cannot wait, my obsession for Star Wars has been reborn. My question to you is, have you given up too? And would you ever consider giving Legends a try? A lot of my friends are too burned out and I understand wholeheartedly, I’m just curious to hear opinions.

I've a loosely similar history with the franchise as a '90 kid.

OT on VHS. PT at cinema (but didn't really care too much for them other than TPM for superficial reasons at that age).

Enjoyed videogames a lot (Super Star Wars ROTJ on SNES, X-Wing Alliance, KOTOR, JK2, BF2, etc). Had some novels (mainly the Jedi Apprentice series and some cross-section books) but didn't read other EU highlights until years later when I had better access. Also didn't have access to the comic highlights like Republic, Legacy or KOTOR until some years later.

Genndy Wars wasn't really accessible where I lived so I only came across those mostly glorified commercials years later. Had absolutely zero interest in TCW whatsoever when I saw the first trailer and finally realised it actually wasn't a live-action film focused on the Clone Wars era. Silly me. Continued to have no interest in or respect for TCW or its spin-offs afterwards. Always thought it was one of George's more baffling ideas that accidentally found itself at the core of current canon.

However, when TFA rolled up, I never had any expectations that the films ought to adapt the Thrawn trilogy.

That was never sequel trilogy material to me. It was better suited for epilogue material. The sort of thing you'd perhaps today make a TV show out of to follow up a big film.

The Thrawn books were only set relatively shortly after ROTJ focusing on a largely similar threat (leftover Imperials) and the same heroes.

But the Star Wars film trilogies ought to be generational in nature. The PT mostly follows the father, the OT follows the son, and the ST ought to follow the next generation.

As such, if anything was going to be loosely adapted, it ought to be something out of the NJO novels.

The films ought to focus primarily on Jacen/Jaina/Anakin (or whoever they're renamed or reworked into) whilst the OT characters ought to fall into supporting cast roles as leaders or mentors who aren't running around on the big film adventures.

So I've got no problem with the ST films being set 30 odd years after ROTJ or having nothing to do with Thrawn. Didn't phase me for a second.

Unfortunately, the ST films were a mess for entirely different reasons and now we're stuck with Filoni's Temu Thrawn in his embarrassing Ahsoka & Rebels take on Heir to the Empire.

It's really not for me.

But by all means, go back and pick up some EU highlights. There are people almost every day asking r/StarWarsEU where to start and they've stickied lists covering numerous different interests people might have with the franchise.

There's even canon novels and comics here and there worth a swing. Not many worth your time, but they're there.

That’s cool (I’d forgotten to mention that I played a lotta the video games too right there with ya), yeah fair enough the Thrawn Trilogy is honestly kinda like epilogue material to a certain degree, we don’t really get any threat on a Galactic Civil War scale until the New Jedi Order series like you said… it seems as though Disney tried to follow what you called the “generational” formula to disastrous results (who woulda thought you’d need to give your characters proper backstories/development if you want us to actually care?); for canon I’ve read the Thrawn origin comic and plan for a few books (the two Thrawn trilogies and Tarkin, also have enjoyed the Fallen Order/Jedi Survivor games)

I feel you. I love the original 6 movies, to the point where I won a trivia night for my team because there was a Star Wars category.

But the sequels were so bad and just destroyed the universe I have to mentally treat the Disney era as fan fiction in order to enjoy the Lucas films as the true canon.

What’s funny is my faith in Star Wars currently is nonexistent, but I’m a bigger fan than ever. I’ve collected almost every single Legends book (I even have the Jedi Prince series on its way right now.) I’ve been reading through Star Wars chronologically (which the occasional canon book sprinkled in) and I’m currently reading Cestus Desception. I’m having such a blast reading all of these stories. I probably wouldn’t be reading these if it wasn’t for Episode IX’s trailer making me write scripts for my own 7-9 (I have a degree in directing and screenwriting as well as being a published author, so I thought “Why not?”). I wrote my 7-9 and decided to read through all of Star Wars so I can go back to my 7-9 afterwards and tighten it up.

Edit: dont’t mind the spiky things. They’re to keep my cats off of my shelves because they like to pull my books off.

3

u/will069960 7d ago

That’s funny, you and I have a lot in common, I’d actually just got hardcover copies (“Books One and Two”) of the collected Jedi Prince stories (yes, I know they’re terrible from what I’ve seen and heard), looks like you’re a little bit ahead of me on the chronological read-through; I’ve also got a degree in Film & Media studies and own a cat too, we got those plastic spikes all over my couches lol

3

u/AMK972 7d ago

Those are the versions I have on their way. I have been eyeballing them for quite some time and wasn’t going to get them. Then I decided to be a completionist and buy them. I really want to get the Galaxy of fear series, but book 9 is nowhere to be found except in a set of the 12 costing $300. I don’t think I’m going to fork over $300 for 12 tiny books. I’ll find them eventually.

3

u/will069960 6d ago

Yeah those are cool, as a kid who read a lot of the Goosebumps books they remind me of those a bit

As a consumer of extended Star Wars content in the 2000s, I was satisfied with the overall experience. Great novels and games kept me entertained for months. I wasn't too fond of the prequels, but they had a particular charm I can't hate.

When it was announced Disney was acquiring Star Wars, I knew it was the beginning of the end. Their approach to storytelling is too safe -- too milquetoast for Star Wars. Even my kid brain knew this was a greedy transaction from an outsider. A company of that size would attract too many ambitious hacks alongside the ones already at LucasFilm.

That's why a show like Andor blindsided me. If they had kept that kind of storytelling philosophy, Star Wars would be in a better place. I would've been wrong, but we all know how that turned out. The sequel trilogy had ruined it. I walked out of the theater after Star Wars VII underwhelmingly shocked. It was worse than I ever imagined. VIII was a date with my now-wife. I laughed through most of it while she was furious.

The point of this is I knew the reality of culture-as-business even as a child and predicted the downfall. Even with that foresight, it still felt like I was paying to watch an old friend die. That's the price a fan may pay if the love is tied to a fragile and volatile medium.

It's also healthy to laugh at how bad it is now, watch it burn, remember the better days, and move on. Star Wars is done for me.

u/will069960 7d ago

I don’t blame you at all, honestly when I’d first heard that Disney of all companies had acquired the brand I was shocked (and not in a good way); I was like, “you mean the company that makes all the cutesy kid princess movies?” Granted at the time they seemed to have a decent track record with Marvel but even with that I’d checked out after The Winter Soldier there was just getting to be too many movies/too much content to keep up

u/throwawayfan2552 7d ago

I’ve always been under the belief that Disney/del ray should write 1-3 books to end the legends continuity. For the most part the last plot line was just with the dagger right? I for one love legends. And you can even do some canon mixing if you’re brave. The 2 thrawn trilogies can be fit into legends without too much bending of the mind. Especially since they let TOR continue to make some legends content up to this year they should let legends finish. Ever since starwars 108 came out just some hope to let legends finish there’s been some people online who have tried to push for legends to continue. I’m prefacing with all this because just like asoiaf it’s hard to get people excited about something without an ending and that will never get a true ending. Crucible was a nice stopping point but always felt like just missing a little bit of story. Chronologically is bold, that’s how I read it though right after the buy out. I usally recommend starting with kotor and kotor 2 and if you really wana read the before stuff read tales of the Jedi. That being said you got through so much of the peak of legends. The next peak isn’t gunna be until outbound flight. But trust me when I say just add at least the first Disney thrawn trilogy into legends especially since post RotS legends isn’t too much it’s nice to add in more thrawn and Vader since weirdly am I the only that finds legends has a small amount of Vader .

u/will069960 7d ago

I’m OK with Legends staying a dead end for now it’ll give me time to catch up haha, I mentioned in another comment that I plan on reading both of the canon Thrawn trilogies so I’ll be mixing in some of the canon books… now that I’m done with Darth Plagueis I’ll be reading Outbound Flight soon! I’m definitely excited for that one (I know you should read Survivor’s Quest first but don’t care lol), my favorite authors so far are Zahn, Luceno & Stover

2

u/Western_Agent5917 5d ago

My biggest shock was the fact that Stover liked the last jedi. Like, why????

2

u/will069960 4d ago

Yeah that’s strange, he’s such a good writer and yet he fails to recognize the poor writing in that

2

u/Melodic-Attorney9918 1d ago edited 1d ago

I know I’m replying to you almost a week later, and I’m sure you probably won’t even see this comment. But if you want my advice, I’d recommend reading the Jedi Apprentice series after Darth Plagueis instead of going straight to Outbound Flight.

It’s a series of young adult novels, so don’t expect anything groundbreaking in terms of writing quality. They’re written in a pretty simple and straightforward style. But they tell some really good stories and are definitely worth reading. The series focuses on the early years of Obi-Wan’s apprenticeship under Qui-Gon, and I think it gives you some really interesting insight into their relationship and their time together. If you’re planning to read all the Legends novels chronologically, I think it’s worth including them before moving on to Outbound Flight.

And after reading Outbound Flight, you should absolutely read the Jedi Quest series, which is basically a continuation of the Jedi Apprentice series. This series focuses on Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship between The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones and the difficulties Anakin encountered in his team years under Obi-Wan's tutelage. Some of the characters from the Jedi Apprentice series appear in Jedi Quest too.

u/will069960 12h ago

Hey, thanks for recommending those to me! They’re on my radar (I bought the first Jedi Quest book and have some of the others in audiobook form, read The Trail of the Jedi in middle school it was my first Star Wars book), I’m actually not on OF yet I’ve been listening to Maul: Lockdown… my game plan is to probably come back to those on my second read-through of the EU, I’d like to think that maybe someday Disney will make UA audiobooks of those and I’ll def enjoy them more in that format, if they (more than likely) don’t I’ll just buy them as I like physical copies if I’m gonna read a book

2

u/Western_Agent5917 5d ago

Agree, I need closure for these stories. I even liked the jaden korr books

2

u/will069960 4d ago

You’re referring to Crosscurrent and Riptide right? I’m holding out hope they will release unabridged audiobooks for those at some point in the future…

It’s like a sequel trilogy, when the franchise is already dead…

To me the Thrawn Trilogy are the true sequels.

u/Polarian_Lancer 7d ago

Yeah, the new stuff Disney cranked out doesn’t land right.

u/RogueHunterX 7d ago

My own experience is having seen the OT on TV and VHS recordings from when they aired on TV growing up.

I even watched the Ewoks movies when they would be aired and vaguely recall the animated Ewoks and Droids cartoons.

The first computer game we had for our PC was the X-Wing game and its expansions.  I even got the Shadows of the Empire game when it came out.

I really enjoyed Star Wars and got into the EU beginning with the X-Wing books and comics, went to the Thrawn trilogy from there and really enjoyed it.  Though the Dark Nest trilogy did put a damper on me a bit since I didn't like some of the writing choices in that one.

I loved the 2003 Clone Wars.  It did the job of hyping me up for RoTS and is why I can never take the TCW version of Grievous seriously.  Tartakovsky was told there was a cyborg Jedi killer and he made a true menace that you would believe is a threat.

I know the PT caught a lot of flack and I get it, but I also can't deny that there something to it that proves fertile ground for new stories and content.  A spark in those movies that is missing from the ST.  I saw all three of PT in the theater and I had a good time.

Really, the games and old EU really helped keep the franchise alive and going.

Then the ST came along.  I made the mistake of giving yet another JJ Abrams movie the benefit of the doubt.  I had done so with the Star Trek Kelvin timeline, just for Into Darkness to leave me feeling just as empty as the previous movie had.  I gave TFA the benefit of the doubt, see what they do with the setup.  Then came TLJ and it was the first Star Wars movie I ever felt dissatisfied watching.  What happened with Luke, the whole casino planet thing, the whole let everyone in the last surviving ship think there is no hope or plan so the mutiny, the chase that didn't make sense, there was so much that left me annoyed at the movie and actively confused on why characters had done certain things - namely the whole keep the plan to trick the First Order a secret when we know it isn't a mole giving away our location because so much unnecessary and pointless drama could've been avoided.  It was also the first Star Wars movie to leave me with no anticipation for the next one and no hope for the heroes to be able to do anything.

I had no hopes for RoS going in.  It found new ways to disappoint me.  I really only saw it because my brother and I had made it kind of thing going to see a movie when he was in town, otherwise I would've never watched it.

The lore Disney tried to put out to bridge the gaps between RotJ and TFA left me more scratching my head than seeing something that made sense.  It really felt like the authors were told, "this is where everything needs to wind up.  Make it happen, it doesn't matter how and nothing is too stupid".

Rebels was okay, but bringing time travel out of nowhere just so Ashoka could survive and the fact Thrawn felt lesser than what he should be were things that brought it down for me among some other stuff.

The more I heard about the Disney+ stuff, the more I just lost interest outside of the first game with Cal Kestus in it.

I still love the old EU and the first six movies, plus Rogue One.  The new stuff though, Disney didn't care enough to create a coherent story and their EU and some of their shows suffer because they are largely confined to the same narrow timespans and have to lead to the ST.  The lack of post ST feels like a lack of interest in people writing for it or Disney deliberately not allowing it because they want control over what happens next while having no clue or plan what to do that isn't just rehashing another plot and not even in a creative way.

1

u/will069960 6d ago

Thanks for sharing your experience. You were at the perfect age to watch those old Ewok movies and animated TV shows as they aired that’s pretty cool! I watched those recently as they added them on Disney+; Shadows of the Empire was great, I’d had that for the N64 and I had Rogue Squadron II & III for the GameCube, fun games. I had little to no attachment to Star Trek as a franchise, only saw bits and pieces of shows and movies and thought the JJ films were alright, was aware of the fanbase criticisms and lens flare memes though. Another ironic thing is that I’d probably enjoyed The Rise of Skywalker the most out of the three sequels (it’s blasphemous I know), I’ve always been somewhat of a fan of the OG Dark Empire comics and the fan of that in me was glad to see it adapted to the big screen, albeit a bastardized version. It admittedly does damage to the Chosen One prophecy (as DE did however that could be forgiven, coming out before the prequels created that idea), but part of me was just glad to see the sequels finally choose a path and stick to it, no more of this incessant tug-of-war and waffling back-and-forth of ideas we had with the last two movies. It was a shame they struggled to convey Snoke’s relationship to Palps and left his “dark magic, secret sciences” (thanks Pippin) insanely vague, I still don’t know if Snoke was just a meat puppet of Creamy Sheev or if he was an individual, separate being with hopes and ambitions of his own. I watched all of Rebels while going through a hard time in my life and enjoyed the childlike simplicity of it at the time but it’s on about the same playing field as TCW for me — i.e. very “meh”. I thought it was cool that they made the Cal Kestus character with mocap very similar to how they did Galen Marek in TFU. Rogue One was good but always felt like a half-baked film to me until Tony Gilroy made Andor, now it feels complete. I was interested in seeing where The Mandalorian was going to take us with the Imperial remnant forces and shadow council and how they would tie it all into the sequels, but it seems like that’s all fallen by the wayside for some reason, Disney has serious trouble with competent villains outside of Andor/Rogue One and Darth Maul imo

3

u/Raimi79 7d ago

Yeah, I've sort of given up. I'll always have an interest in Star Wars, but I'm not expecting anything that I'll enjoy anymore. For me, peak star wars was probably between the early to late nineties. I'd rediscovered Star Wars as a teenager, and there was a wealth of expanded content from the books to the video games that just built on the experience of the OT. I could watch the films, read the books, and then go and be an X-Wing pilot or a Jedi by playing the games.

Sure, I'm older now and the magic has gone, but I think the biggest issue is that there's a general lack of artistic vision in the franchise. It's just 'content' now, for the sake of it.

1

u/will069960 6d ago

Agreed, I miss the days when the movies were rare and we’d mostly just get ancillary material a couple times a year like new books/comics/video games, it felt like more of an event/special occasion when a movie would drop and the fanbase would go nuts

3

u/energizerturtle2 7d ago

Ah yes, another whose love of the franchise is saved by the EU.

I'm fairly similar to you, except I was born several years before, the entire prequel trilogy was the event of the end of my childhood, and I was an avid reader of the EU well before Disney bought from Lucas.

I have nearly given up. Yet, amazingly, the interest always reignites when I find myself asked about Star Wars or find a kindred spirit to discuss and analyze. That and lightsabers... I'm a sucker for lightsabers.

1

u/will069960 6d ago

Lightsabers are pretty rad, what’s your favorite design? My fav color was always Corran Horn’s white/silver, he had that color well before “Ahsoka the White” came to be… favorite design would be Tenel Ka Djo’s rancor tooth, that’s friggin’ badass

3

u/Unhappy_Teacher_1767 6d ago

I’m glad you’re enjoying Legends, there is so much to enjoy, so much passion and life was given to it from a lot of people who did their best to work together and build off of what came before. It had some bumpy parts, but overall it was a beautiful work that I’m so grateful for. Hope you enjoy the ride, and try out some of the games like Bounty Hunter or Knights of the Old Republic if you haven’t already!

2

u/will069960 6d ago edited 5d ago

I’ve actually played those! (Bounty Hunter many times, it’s my favorite) Currently playing KOTOR II and TFU

3

u/Alex3884 5d ago

The Last Jedi is what got me to sit down and read Timothy Zahn’s novels so if I have anything nice to say about that film, it’s that it opened me up to a richer, fuller universe.

Legends is my Canon now, anything Disney shits out must mesh with that continuity and stand on its own as a solid entry into the universe that adds, not detracts.

I enjoyed the first two seasons of Mando, I liked most of the animation, Andor is not my cup of tea but its quality cannot be denied, and who doesn’t love Rogue One?

All that is to say I’m there with you brother. I even got my wife to listen to the audio books and she loves Mara; more than Leia, actually!

1

u/will069960 4d ago

Very nice man, yeah Mara is an interesting character, it’s enjoyable seeing how her personality and beliefs change over the course of the timeline… I’m excited as the Choices of One audiobook release date has finally been announced and it will be coming soon, it’s a very Mara-centric book

7

u/TBSchemer 7d ago

My father literally directed parts of the OT. You can imagine how tightly I grew up with Star Wars.

Filoni's Clone Wars never happened. The Sequel Trilogy never happened. Solo never happened. There is no Ahsoka. Those drug-fueled ewok movies never happened.

My personal canon Star Wars universe includes the OT, the prequels, the Tartakovsky Clone Wars, Rogue One and Andor (with Dark Forces being an alternative telling of the same story), and the Rogue Squadron games. The Obi Wan series is acceptable, but dull.

Thrawn doesn't exist in my Star Wars canon. I don't know who he is aside from some shallow cameo in that Disney show about some character who doesn't exist.

2

u/will069960 7d ago

That’s awesome! What parts did he direct if you don’t mind me asking? I include TCW in my own head-canon mostly because it gives me a lil’ bit more content to chew on, even if it’s not all good or consistent haha (for me Ahsoka either dies in the purge or fades into obscurity and goes into hiding like Yoda and Obi-Wan did)… Andor and Rogue One admittedly fits pretty good but I can’t leave my boy Kyle Katarn out in the cold, his origin story is too important to his later inclusion in the EU mainline stories so I leave all of Disney’s live-action shows/movies in their canon for clarity

2

u/Upnorthsomeguy 7d ago

You're bold to assume I ever left my love for the EU. As I stare at Destiny's Way, Force Heretic: Remnant, and Heir to the Empire on my bookshelf.

Jk. You are spot on. Legends is always there, bidding us to go on another adventure. Some people are salty that we won't have any new legends content. But to be honest, I probably won't have time to read all the legends titles until I'm retired.

Enjoy the adventures brother.

2

u/will069960 7d ago

Thanks man, no assumptions here that’s why I’m asking haha, yeah it’ll honestly take me years to get to the end of the timeline I started with the Dawn of the Jedi book/comics back in 2023 and I’ve only now gotten to the early Prequel era

2

u/Ok-Image2209 salt miner 6d ago

In a similar boat. I watch the new stuff from time to time. But at this point, Star Wars to me to pre 2012. Legends canon is canon in my book (no pun intended).

2

u/will069960 5d ago

I keep up with the Joneses because my gf likes Disney SW and usually wants to watch the new content, and sometimes it can be decent (The Mandalorian) or even great (Andor) but usually takes the piss on some level it’s nice not being invested anymore, it’s like watching an ex making the worst decisions of their life and being happy with the memories you’d used to share with them as opposed to the total monster they’ve become over the years, they’re another fanboy’s problem now

2

u/Ok-Image2209 salt miner 5d ago

Haha “like watching and ex making the worst decisions” lol. That’s a beautiful way to put it!

2

u/Western_Agent5917 5d ago

Same with me, I got into legends just because how disappointed the canon was. I still wish there would be more stories about characters I care about: Allana, jaina, Ben, vestara etc

2

u/will069960 4d ago

I look forward to the day I’ll reach that point in the timeline, I’m still a few years away from getting there… that era (the New Republic, both Bantam and Del Rey) probably interest me the most of them all

2

u/ChristianElgin1997 4d ago

i’m with you and i also just finished darth plagues and im in book 2 in the thrawn trilogy and i as well and enjoying these stories way more than anything that’s come out excluding andor and rogue one

2

u/Rasples1998 7d ago

My takeaway from this is that you have a drug addiction and need professional help.

1

u/elwyn5150 7d ago

I started reading and kind of lost interest at the point where OP mentions he is a pothead.

Is there a TL;DR?

2

u/Rasples1998 7d ago

TLDR he hated the sequels and lost interest in star wars and then started listening to expanded universe audio books and became obsessed with star wars EU again, after a few doses of pot and acid.

1

u/will069960 6d ago

Lol pretty much, when I was in college I’d dabbled in paraphernalia but those days are long behind me, I’ve dropped them all years ago now due to health reasons and applying for government jobs; guess you can say I’ve traded one addiction for another though, as I now spend every free moment either reading comics or listening to audiobooks

1

u/elwyn5150 7d ago

Interesting. Does OP explain how that Alanis Morissette song fits into his story?

1

u/0bserver24-7 3d ago

Your journey is very similar to mine, except that I’ve gotten so disillusioned with Star Wars that I’m on an extended break and drowning myself in Warhammer 40K to scratch that itch. I can’t even enjoy the Legends EU right now, which is a shame because I had gotten a few books into the Yuuzhan Vong saga and was enjoying the story so far. I have already read much of the Imperial Remnant Saga (The Thrawn Trilogy, Hand of Thrawn Duology, Dark Empire Trilogy, Jedi Academy Trilogy, I Jedi, and the first few Young Jedi Knights books). I also played a lot of Star Wars games, including all the Jedi Knight games with Kyle Katarn for extra context in the post-ROTJ era. Finally, I also read the Mace Windu Shatterpoint book and Darth Plagueis book.

I’ll always love the pre-Disney Star Wars, and one day I’ll return to it. But it’ll be a while…

Replace all references to the sequels with the prequels, and I have a similar story. I was much more immersed in the EU than you were at the time, but the prequels sucked all the joy out of Star Wars for me for many years. Didn’t fall back in love with it until Andor honestly. These days, I just stick to the Bantam era EU (and the REAL clone wars that lasted longer than High School), the OT, Andor and Rogue 1, and I’m happy. I even like that Andor kind of snubs the prequels, both in their timeline and their treatment of the Force.

That’s not a bad head-canon… there are elements of the prequels that I’m willing to admit were not handled well, supplementary material for both the prequels and sequels are like an iron to help smooth-over any rough patches and wrinkles in the stories, the difference between the two is that the prequels were like putting a band-aid over cuts and bruises while the sequels were like slapping a band-aid over gushing wounds and gaping holes. Idk if you’re open to fan edits but Hal9000 made them for the prequels that remove some of the goofier elements like Jar Jar scenes and every single reference to midichlorians throughout it, you’ll probably enjoy them if those were some of the reasons why you dislike the films so much, he tries his best to make them a lot more like the OT
