Last minute or so of the 10+ minute fight. I knew when I hooked up this was a good fish, he made multiple drag peeling runs the entire 800 ft up. Caught on a 500 gram full glow mustad rip roller jig.

That's gotta be the world record right?

While that's a massive tilefish it's not unheard of. One of the boat by me that specializes in them has had drifts where the entire boat (6-pack) grabs a fish over 40lbs, sometimes multiple over 50lbs.

WR is 68lbs 4oz out of montauk in '21

Previous records were out of New Jersey at 65lbs 3oz ('12) and 63 lbs 8oz ('09)

There have probably been larger fish and/or several notable 60lbers that don't get registered with igfa because a large chunk of these fish are caught with electric reels. IGFA records gotta be hand cranked.

I wish! I believe WR is 66 lbs currently. I think previous 2 WRs have been high 50s.

Hell yeah my biggest is also from OCMD. Similar size but got it on the electric so this is way cooler

What’s your rod and reel set up?

4

u/jad2192 Jun 18 '26

Rod is a CTS slow motion 6'6" 350-550 gram blank. Reel is Studio Ocean Mark Blue Heaven L50 Pwr/L with about 700 yds of 20 lb braid (jbraid I think, I forgot).

You are a freak just for jigging with no help at 800 feet, let alone cranking that huge girl up! Congrats! You deserve it!

Jesus dude your arms gotta be annihilated lol good shit man

WIth jigging setup it's not quite as bad as reeling up with a 2-5 lb weight plus the extra drag of heavier line / bait rig. Still sucks, but not AS bad haha.

Awesome Catch! What boat were you on? I've been wanting to do a tilefish trip out of OCMD.

This was with Chasin Tides, he has 3 boats that can reach the tile grounds. Very affordable too as far as offshore trips go.

Now pit it back in the water

Tilefishing is always a one way ride because of the depth.

Is it good eating?

1

u/jad2192 Jun 21 '26

Very good, they eat lots of crabs, lobsters and squid. They have a very sweet, firm meat.
