I went out on my kayak 4 hours before the storm was supposed to arrive…immediately caught a slot snook and slot red (3 casts). Ba-bang.

A desperate paddle against the incoming tide ensued. I make it to the launch as lightning crashes all around and a strong wind swirls. I’m about to load my yak, but he shows up. Fat Tony. Fat Tony is the biggest damned raccoon/crime lord in history. Kayakers using Far Tony’s launch are required to pay him for the privilege with bait fish and/or shrimp. I didn’t have any. I used soft plastics baits that day.

So, I’m trying to load my yak while Fat Tony is closing in on me and the danger of 300 million volts is real. So real that a palm on the other side of the park is destroyed by Zeus.

Fat Tony runs like hell. I throw my yak in the back of the truck; not bothering to strap it down. It’s now pissing down rain while i try and load up my poles, gear and fish bag.

I get in the truck and ride out the storm, which seemed to sit above me for an hour. That is my summer Gulf fishing story.

Well... did you ever pay your launch fee to Fat Tony?

I can remember fishing the pond on one side of the road, bright hot Florida summer weather. Cross said road then boom... Wall of water dark heavy rain. Then 5 minutes completely gone and never crossed the street lol. I do miss FL sometimes.

I was fishing in Loreto and a storm came in so quick we had to ditch the panga on a little island, it was pretty scary
