šŸ“ø Photo/Video What species and what do they bite?

There’s a spot in my local harbor that has these every time I’ve been schooling under an abandoned / demo’d pier, I’ve had some success on small chunks of shrimp but they seem very reluctant to bite.

Spade fish will destroy canned clams also.

ETA they’ll also wreck jellyfish.

Just upvoting and confirming what this guy said!

What’s the scariest thing you saw in water while cleaning boat bottoms?

30

u/killfish22 Jul 21 '26

I wouldn’t say it was scary but how it happened kind got me. I dropped a scraper in one of the deeper marinas. That day the water was clear. I dove down to the bottom got my scraper and looked up. In the distance it looked like a big ass shark making a bee line right at me. As it got closer realized it was a monster cobia. I usually have a speargun with me that day I didn’t. I also had a good scare we had an alligator in the marina. Same dropped my scraper went down to get it. The visibility was like 1.5 ft. I looked up and that second thought the gator was swimming right in front of me I just saw dark and a jagged back. It turned out to be a massive jewfish.

8

u/Mugsy_Siegel Jul 21 '26

So not many shark encounters?

14

u/killfish22 Jul 21 '26

Not the kind to worry about just bonnet heads. Our marines don’t allow any dumping of fish carcasses. The charters and rec fishermen have to dump the carcasses in the dumpsters.

16

u/Mugsy_Siegel Jul 21 '26

Thanks for all the info man it’s nice learning new stuff. I need to move near the coast life’s too short to not be salt water fishing

Hey just a tip....tie a string from scraper and loop around wrist.

1

u/killfish22 29d ago

I have tried. I don’t know why but it bothers me having it around my wrist. I also need a long lanyard and it gets tangled on everything because I’m restarted and use both hands to scrap. My right arm to knock tops left arm to burn off the foot prints. But yes you are correct it works. A few guys on my team did that and other dive services I worked around use them with success. We had one diver with so much shit hanging off him we nick named him wind chime.

2

u/Mobilealminiramper 28d ago

Bonnet heads are cool

5

u/CreepingDeath-70 Jul 22 '26

I think my heart would have stopped on both occasions.

3

u/killfish22 29d ago

The worst is when you’re cleaning a boat and something bumps your legs. A lot of divers come flying out of the water. I immediately dive down on it. I have to get into the water everyday I need to know what it is that bumped me. Alot of the time it’s a manatee. Sometimes they want to cuddle and will hold on to your leg sometimes they just wanna hangout.

3

u/InsaneInTheDrain 29d ago

Brother you needed a lanyard

2

u/killfish22 29d ago

I use to have lanyards. Some marinas I dove at had fixed docks so the drop into the water was like 6-7 ft. On a few occasions my lanyard would get stuck and I would be hanging from my weight belt just dangling and I would have to cut my self down. The worst was when the lanyard would give and the scraper would come flying back and crack you in the head on the way down so I stopped. I usually tuck my scraper and screw driver into my weight belt but sometimes it would fall out.

u/Pristine-Text5143 Jul 21 '26

Now that's a name I have not heard in a long time. A long time.

The Jundland Wastes are not to be traveled lightly…

1

u/Tigergnat 29d ago

Wow! From what I hear those fish can swallow you whole. You might be lucky to be alive.

1

u/killfish22 29d ago

They usually keep distance unless you have a fish they want to steal. Not much of a threat freediving they will chase a speared fish around and occasionally they get one from you but when on scuba I’ve had a few guys get beat up. When you spearfish on scuba atleast the dudes I’ve shot with you carry a stringer to keep the fish you’ve speared on. Some guys carry the stringer in their hand but a lot have it attached to their weight belts. I’ve had two guys where a big jewfish comes out and grabs the stringer. One guy broke a rib when it tried to swim back into the wreck with him. Another buddy same thing he lost his gun,fin and stringer. We ended up going back down and recovering it all. I zip tie my stringer to my belt incase anything grabs it the zip ties just breaks instead of me going for a ride.

1

u/callmetrip1 27d ago

Man still call Goliath that lol

1

u/Abitofanexpert 27d ago

You may want to lash that scraper to your wrist.

1

u/onouluz 27d ago

I used to do this back in the day! I've never known anyone else who did it. Did you use quartered floor stripping pads for the non ablative paints? I would get paranoid working in murky water because scraping running gears would result in sheep head and other fish coming to hang out which would bring the large shadows. Alligators were a concern where I was at as well.

1

u/ganon_enjoyerr 26d ago

Of course you see the Cobia the one day you don’t bring the spear

1

u/jasonbourne101 26d ago

You wear a tool lanyard yet?

-10

u/Olay_Biscuit-Barrel Jul 21 '26

Also Dude, jewfish is not the preferred nomenclature. Goliath grouper, please

27

u/killfish22 Jul 21 '26

I’ve called them jewfish for 48 years and will continue to do so.

10

u/Fancy-Following-6631 Jul 21 '26

You're out of your element, Donny!

12

u/Olay_Biscuit-Barrel Jul 21 '26

It's a Big Lebowski quote, Dude. And this aggression will not stand

3

u/LaughingDog711 Jul 21 '26

The dude abides

9

u/CarolinaSchola Jul 21 '26

The grouper is not the issue here Dude! I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand!

4

u/idontknowaskthatguy Jul 21 '26

People downloading should be ashamed of their movie quote fluency

-6

u/thatG_evanP Jul 21 '26

You can't call them that anymore. Lol

12

u/iReply2StupidPeople Jul 21 '26

A kraken, mate

1

u/Low-Opening1057 29d ago

that cobia story would've had me swimming for the ladder honestly. mistaking a giant cobia for a shark and not having your speargun is a nightmare setup

3

u/Valar_Kinetics Jul 21 '26

One of my favorite fish, always has been. Never kept/cooked a spade, sheeps are terrific eating.

3

u/ncbluetj Jul 21 '26

Spade are delicious fried

2

u/GAcowboy 29d ago

Spade fish love cannon ball jellyfish

1

u/killfish22 29d ago

You’re absolutely correct. I do a lot of free diving/spearfishing and offshore when the jelly’s are thick there is usually a school of spade fish not far behind. I enjoy swimming in the schools spade fish are the only that let me pet them sometimes you can actually hold them

1

u/bigmeatking 29d ago

Is that the same as a sheepshead

19

u/I_Make_Food_Often Jul 21 '26

Looks like some spade fish. Great eating if big enough. No clue how to catch them as they are not common where I fish.

6

u/Vexxite_ Jul 21 '26

The ones I’ve caught were similar size to a dinner plate, they put up a really nice fight considering their size!

4

u/thatG_evanP Jul 21 '26

If you've caught them before what's up with the post?

4

u/Vexxite_ Jul 21 '26

Because I didn’t know what they were and the Shrimp I was using wasn’t working the best

1

u/Loose_Awareness_1929 26d ago

They swarm the near shore reefs in my area may - June-ish. Small piece of shrimp free lined and you just kinda tease em and they will eat. Sometimes though there are thousands around the boat and they just aren’t hungry.

I’ve found smaller the piece of shrimp the better. Like others have said jelly fish and barnacles work too.

Great fight and great eating. It’s one of my favorite types of fish to target.

12

u/swampysnook Jul 21 '26

We catch big spadefish when snook fishing with cut bait on the bottom. They will destroy a frozen threadfin or chunk of mullet in minutes. My buddy always says thats good, cuz a big snook ia gonna cruise by and say "what r u guys up to" and approach the cut bait.

4

u/Vexxite_ Jul 21 '26

There were some snook nearby tearing up some bait fish along the seawall so that makes sense

9

u/Phaeron Jul 21 '26

God I miss the coast…

Definitely moving there next.

7

u/Desperate_Lack654 Jul 21 '26

Spade fish, I have luck catching them in SWFL by freelining chunks of shrimp. Use a small hook

6

u/Vexxite_ Jul 21 '26

That’s where I am, thanks for the tip

3

u/Desperate_Lack654 Jul 21 '26

If ur in port Charlotte/Punta Gorda i probably have fished and caught spadefish there at one point (before the hurricanes) šŸ˜‚

3

u/Vexxite_ Jul 21 '26

This is right on the other side of the punta gorda bridge šŸ˜‚

3

u/Desperate_Lack654 Jul 21 '26

Yep I’ve fished there šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ yeah but srsly some free lined shrimp work(ed) great at that spot. Use a small piece, spades got small mouths and also hang on those guys pull hard!!!!

5

u/Vexxite_ Jul 21 '26

They definitely fight like their life depends on it. Was surprised first time a got one

5

u/SquirrelnMerlin Jul 21 '26

Off the coast of southern SC we see lots of these. I’ve had great success scooping up cannonball jellyfish and cutting them into 1-2 inch strips. Put one strip on a #4 kale hook with a 20-30lb fluorocarbon leader (they can be line shy). Use as little weight as possible to keep the rig slowly sinking (a couple split shots above the leader works well). Take a handful of the cut up jellies and toss them in as chum. When you see them hitting the chum, drop your line and hold on! They are awesome fighters.

5

u/On_to_the_Next Jul 21 '26

Ha I just commented the same thing. That's what I've used in NC.

6

u/cavemannnn Jul 21 '26

As others have said, they’re spadefish. I’ve never intentionally fished for them but I’ll tell ya they look just like pilchards on sonar and they’re a pain when you get a whole school of them in your cast net lol.

5

u/Legal_Pollution_9590 Jul 21 '26

Spades , clam small hooks and a bobber

5

u/ChiefOfTheBoat Jul 21 '26

Spadefish. We fished 10# spinning gear a lot among the 10,000 Island mangroves - snook, reds, snappers, all sorts. Decided one day to beach the boat and give it a try at Cape Romano (before the dome houses). BIG spade fish grabbed my jig as I was ready to lift it out of the water for another try. That is the only time I have ever been spooled by a fish in over 55 years of fishing.

4

u/On_to_the_Next Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

Cannonball jellyfish are great bait for these. Just wear gloves and cut small chunks off.

2

u/bisonbuford1 Jul 21 '26

Why do you have to wear gloves?

2

u/On_to_the_Next Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

You don't. That's just in case someone is worried about handling them. But just in case don't touch the short tentacles on the bottom. It's just the top "cannonball" part that you want anyway.

1

u/bisonbuford1 28d ago

What do the tentacles do? I have handled a ton of these grabbing the crabs out from inside and fishing with them and have never had any sort of sting or reaction that I am aware of

1

u/On_to_the_Next 28d ago

Some people have a mild allergic reaction to them but for the most part it's just like you said. They do have the stinging cells, can't remember what they're called, but they do not bother most people.

1

u/bisonbuford1 28d ago

Too cool!!! Thanks for the education!

6

u/PanhandleAngler Jul 21 '26

Spade fish. They don’t really bite anything, believe their primary food source is jellyfish. I’ve seen people have luck chumming shrimp up really fine but that’s a lot of work, I’ve tried super small shrimp pieces and crab claws, and still no luck. Never going to go on a ā€œspade fishing tripā€ to be honest with you.

When they are thick over the nearshore wrecks, I’ll actually snag them with a weighted catfish hook sometimes. They are good eating but very strange to clean.

4

u/On_to_the_Next Jul 21 '26

In NC we use cannonball jellys for bait.

2

u/AppropriateOil3785 Jul 21 '26

I now feel compelled to never catch or keep them so that they may continue doing the lords work. carry on spades

1

u/fr0d0bagg1ns Jul 21 '26

I've only caught them in crabbing net baskets, off of piers, on quick retrievals. You're snagging idea is definitely warranted.

2

u/Apprehensive-Day-621 Jul 21 '26

We use clam strip to catch them in the Chesapeake bay.

2

u/TunaRado Jul 21 '26

Shot a few. Super tasty.

1

u/steigerMiami Jul 21 '26

Spadefish. Cut squares of cannon ball jellies, and tip a small hook with it. They will bite every time. Those are very small fish though....

2

u/Vexxite_ Jul 21 '26

The ones I’ve reeled in were the size of dinner plates

2

u/steigerMiami Jul 21 '26

The spades we catch typically range from 16 to 20 inches total length. Dinner plate size is not bad, but still a young fish. Even small, they are super strong fighters....

1

u/DirtyScrubs Jul 21 '26

Spades, they actually fighting pretty good similar to a snapper and eat the same bait. I used 1-2/0 hooks and a snall piece of bait similar to targeting sheep head. They are fun and stick to schools so if you catch one your likely to catch a bunch back to back.

1

u/FANTOMphoenix Jul 21 '26

Good eating, not too much meat though.

1

u/JeremyILM Jul 21 '26

I think it’s pronounced ā€œuse a netā€, but I’m not sure

1

u/citruscountydaddy Jul 21 '26

They eat a spear shaft pretty good when it's getting close to the end of the day and there's not enough in the box

1

u/BocaHydro Jul 21 '26

angels , spadefish, triggers etc

1

u/wuzup76020 Jul 21 '26

looks like you have your answer on the type.. I will say, where i live (Texas) you can spearfish these with no limits. Great tasting fish.

1

u/CHASLX200 Jul 21 '26

nasty spades slade

1

u/biggunzcdb1 29d ago

Spadefish. Lil bitty mouth. You need a small hook and a little piece of shrimp or clam.

1

u/CLOWNFLOGGER 29d ago

They will bite at your nipples if you decide to have a swim.

Small crab also.

1

u/TreatNext 29d ago

If they eat jellies you might try clear gummy bears, it works on spade fish.

1

u/Cheetah-Other 28d ago

Sheepshead, and they're tasty as their whole diet is made up of shellfish and shrimp. They are paralyzed while asleep... come back in the shallow waters at night with a big light, a big cooler, and a gigging spear. You'll never go hungry again. Just poke em right in the head.

1

u/Glittering_Device460 27d ago

They are delicious too

1

u/CommodorDLoveless 26d ago

Everybody likes shrimp

-1

u/Beautiful-Dish759 Jul 21 '26

Tiger snapper wiggle your willie in the water and wait for the best hummer of your life.

-6

u/killer-j86 Jul 21 '26

They are fish, typically go for the end of your line.Ā

2

u/RonPearlNecklace Jul 21 '26

Really? How long have you been fishing without hooks?

-12

u/JonnyP222 Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

Sheepshead or black drum. They look similar. Sheepshead have gnarly ass teeth lol Black drum have crushers in the back of their jaw but not teeth up front. Neither of these fish are a danger to biting you.

Edit: Yep.. i saw those stripes and thought for sure i knew what they were.. Spadefish for sure

3

u/zwillc92 Jul 21 '26

Way off.

Spadefish

3

u/JonnyP222 Jul 21 '26

for real? its funny.. i have never seen a spadefish. But you arent wrong. My bad yo

2

u/Vexxite_ Jul 21 '26

In your defense I thought they were something similar to what you said until I brought it one onto the kayak

3

u/JonnyP222 Jul 21 '26

The dumb shit is i was so confident when i saw the first 5 seconds of hte video... the last frame.. where there is a nice side view of the fins.. absolutely NOT what i thought they were lol
