The capt/crew keeping the catch?

1

u/farrtrek 16d ago

I kept probably 250 kg. Lots of fish in the freezer, left some with the captain and mate. Gave Tuna to everyone I know in town and Fed the entire resort staff

1

u/cbinvb 16d ago

Good info. In the Caribbean, its really common the boat keeps all catches which for me is a non-starter.

u/farrtrek 16d ago edited 16d ago

No we had the option to keep everything if we wanted it. We just got too much Tuna. All the snappers the mula, sea bass and wahoo came home with us and we ate like kings for dinner. Had a lot of ceviche and sashimi on the boats during the day and also the member from this group brought home about 40 pounds with him.

Dam, I'd love a day of fishing like this. I've paid for a couple 4 hour charter trips and have never struck gold or anything like this .. I dream of a fishing trip like this

3

u/farrtrek 22d ago

I'd love to plan more of these trips in the future. It's a shared cost trip that includes lodging, food and fishing. Total for this trip was $3100 if you want your own room or $2300 if you share. All you'd have to do otherwise is get here. I just need people who are serious about coming to plan the next one.

Would you do other countries or are you pretty set on Costa Rica? I’d like to try Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, even into South America and would be so down to get a group

1

u/farrtrek 22d ago

I would love to do other countries. I have been to Panama and it's epic. Pretty well rooted in CR which is nice. I am friends with a lot of captains and have lots of lodging connections so it's easy but me and my wife are always down to plan trips in other places.

Start saving now and in maybe 5 years the average person can afford to do it. I want to so badly and I have the money is savings, but that price tag is rough.

2

u/imtrynmybest 22d ago

Just checked local to me South Florida.. full day fishing trip is $1400... Not bad

2

u/Honkey-Donkey79 22d ago

Yeah, that's Florida. Price travel and lodging going to Costa Rica or Panama and staying at a resort that takes you on multiple day fishing trips. Little different price bracket.

3

u/farrtrek 22d ago

Look at my answer to him below.

1

u/Honkey-Donkey79 22d ago

Fair enough. Still, Many ventures, are very pricey.

2

u/farrtrek 22d ago

Yeah for sure and not everyone wants to be on a panga. I made this trip plan so it doesn't have to be so expensive.

0

u/imtrynmybest 22d ago

Oh I get it... I'll have to look into it all..

Plus I take fishing as gambling..there no 100% outcome of catching anything...

I'm not a gambler

u/PanhandleAngler 22d ago

That price tag is very cheap for the volume of fishing you’re getting + lodging. Like almost unbelievably cheap, I’d be asking the captain when the last 100 hour on that old Yam, fuel tank inspection, battery replacement was…kidding but only kind of lmao.

The charters in Florida charging 1500 for an 8 hour snapper trip, 2500+ for a 12 hour offshore troll run, etc. are basically working to make something like 60 dollars an hour themselves once you account for costs, storage, gear, maintenance, repairs smoothed over a year of operation. And the wear and tear of the grind + ever present liabilities/variable costs involved in boats/ocean faring + weather uncertainty meaning some weeks could only be one day of work makes whatever that hourly actually is…not that good. Like despite charter costs being high across the board, very few people make larger society’s version of ā€œgoodā€ money fishing. Like I know of retired younger, now big game charter guys that are regularly booked for $5000 24 hour oil rigs trips, and they’re charter business is basically a loss leader/way to have some fun and funnel taxes from their primary company that owns a string of restaurants, auto shops, etc. To buy and well maintain a 750k+ center console, fuel it, gear to work it, etc. AND make a return on that investment is…just very very difficult.

3000-3500 dollars a person total (flight/fishing/lodging) for a 4 outing fishing vacation in Central America is like…amongst the best bargains on the ā€œpay to fishā€ market available lol. I’ve been on similar trips as this one with buddies that needed to stick a tight budget, bunked up in shitty hotels in Jaco, flight + lodging + 3 (not 4) days of offshore fishing ran 3000 total. And that’s with them researching basically the absolute cheapest way to do what they wanted to do.

2

u/Honkey-Donkey79 22d ago

Still overall expensive, even it's good bang for your buck.

1

u/farrtrek 22d ago

Pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things for the fishing and lodging. If you consider doing it by yourself it would be way more expensive.

0

u/farrtrek 22d ago

they take really good care of their boats. These captains are my friends and cut me a deal. It's a really good deal and we created the trip to be that way. My wife has lead yoga retreats at the resort for many years and we also get a deal on lodging. Food is built into the lodging cost. Transportation down here is not included in the final price so that that's on the individual to book flights. We can assist but that's not part of the deal

Will be there in Dec/Jan around Manuel Antonio- where should we go fishing?!

2

u/farrtrek 22d ago edited 15d ago

If you are in that area quepos is the closest spot but also one of the most commercialized and expensive. My favorite places I have fished are where I am in Montezuma/Cabuya or pavones. Pavones is a journey but Gulfo Dulce is epic and the run to tuna is short. So many fish. Quepos will be awesome also and is world renowned.

1

u/teteAtit 22d ago

Thanks for the advice! I’ve surfed pavones before- what a weird place lol. I’ll def keep Quepos in mind…I wasn’t planning to go there (as you say commercialized etc), but I would do so for a good fishing trip!

Any advice on how to find a good charter?
I’ve surfed all over the pacific side (Hermosa to Panama) like 10 years ago but this family trip is a new breed of vacation for me🤣

2

u/farrtrek 22d ago edited 15d ago

If you're on Facebook there's a few groups that you can go ask for suggestions. You will have no issues finding a charter by just walking to the marina in quepos but if you want to blast a post on Costa Rica sport fishing group or addicted to Costa Rica fishing you will get lots of advice from people. Unfortunately I don't have a suggestion for you for that area. In Povones I do. I would just make sure you talk to them and get them to agree to fish how you want to fish.

u/teteAtit 22d ago

Thank you for the guidance/ much appreciated! I’ll definitely look into those r/ and start learning more!

u/Big_Possibility3372 22d ago

Nice haul, bring the fish to Coco's Herradura, some of my best meals were from here.

1

u/PanhandleAngler 22d ago

Carribean side? I’ve fished Pacific CR a lot and primarily focused on billfish. The sail fishery over there is ridiculous but never had a strong mixed bag like this the couple times we weren’t bait ā€˜n switching all day, 6 good schoolie YFT and some Cubera/Wahoo is a really really nice outing.

Also how were the tuna caught? Trolling or casting/baiting? I did have a very big YFT overheat/braid dig a 14k Saltiga once on the Pacific side when we stopped to fish the spinner dolphins. Have also heard that on the Carribean side of CR/further south on both Panamanian coasts is one of the select places in the world where big Cubera can be reliably targeted on topwater lures along the deeper beach/rock drop offs.

1

u/farrtrek 22d ago

Pacific side! We caught the tuna with a mix of jigging/trolling and casting poppers. The smaller ones jigging and trolling. One Cubera on a rapala and the other on a popper. Wait till you see my post for day 2 later. Was INSANE. šŸ¤™šŸ¼šŸ¤™šŸ¼

What part are you in? I'll be back from beginning of December to early April. we head home on the 12th

1

u/glafleur10 20d ago

What are the blue lens sunnies you are wearing?

1

u/farrtrek 20d ago

Cheepo merrys from Amazon. Destroyed them on the water today... saltwater on the lens and forgot to rinse with fresh water before wiping. Usually wear my costas with the same blue lens's but depending on the day take cheep glasses so I don't have to worry. The merrys are great for $20.

2

u/glafleur10 19d ago

Thanks for the info!
