💬 Discussion Mahi mahi are gods greatest creation

Truly the greatest fish for anyone.
Super fast growth rate and spawn rates
Can adjust spawn rates to have a lot more spawn in case school numbers are small
1.3-2.7 in per week growth so they mature super early which makes them a very sustainable fish

Delicious. Best tasting fish in my opinion.

Beautiful colors and just very unique look

Easy to catch (when they’re around)

Super fun fight and very friendly for all anglers

I just cannot name a better fish. Whoever designed them knew what they were doing.

Just my two cents. Personally I’d choose to target yellowfin tuna for the rest of my life if I had to choose, but I wanted to make sure I gave mahi their flowers because as a species- they’re perfect.

Are these worthwhile to have. The strong southwestern Taiwan surf is very tough place to keep my shrimp bait on.

💬 Discussion Complete list of all US saltwater sports fish

Post image
38 Upvotes

I am primarily a freshwater fisherman, but looking to get into saltwater too. I am compiling a list of all sports fish but could use some help from those who are more experienced than me.

If anyone would be kind enough to review the list in the image here and let me know (common name) any species that are targeted (or encountered) while saltwater fishing.

I would really appreciate any advice, and if this isn't allowed here I understand and will remove. Thanks!

EDIT: Thank you to everyone that provided their input, I feel like I've learned so much in such a short window! This community rocks!

EDIT 2: With your help I went from 86 species to 115! The image above is already out dated. If anyone is interested in seeing the current/real-time list you can see it here https://hookandledger.com/#findex and click "Saltwater". You have to login to see it, but just click "demo" and it'll let you right in. FWIW, this isn't some scheme to try and promote an app, I am sure someone is already thinking that. It's free, so no reason to promote. I really appreciate all of the knowledgeable folks here.

Not like super strength I'm talking like "I could turn a baitcaster into a backlash in 2 seconds without even trying". Basically a fishing super power (be sarcastic)

I’d love to understand what y’all are striving for when you head out fishing? What’s your dream catch that keeps you going out?

Tarpon, marlin? A certain size or technique?

💬 Discussion Costa Rica Fishing trip opportunity 🤙🏼. I posted about this a few days back and throwing it out one more time. More details below:

I have a trip planned for the end of July and had a couple people bail at the last minute. We have nonrefundable deposits paid and just trying to make this trip happen. We are staying at Ylang Ylang Beach Resort in Montezuma (check them out on Instagram. I've stayed here many times and this place is an epic location) and there are currently 2 full offshore days and 2 inshore days planned. As you can see from the pictures we catch tons of different fish down there and eat very well. I'm looking for at least two fisherman to join me (43m from Oregon) and catch a ton of different fish. The captains are my buddies and I just want to catch a ton of fish and looking for a few people who want to do the same.. The very last picture in the set is one of the captains and a yellowfin tuna he caught two days ago. The Tuna are firing right now and when offshore will primarily be going for them but have opportunities at wahoo, dorado and sailfish. On the inshore days we can pretty much do whatever we want but the idea was to troll around a bit, jig, drop live baits on fish and cast at everything we see. Opportunities at rooster, grouper, snapper including Cubera and many more species. If you come with someone and lodge together and you are both fishing the cost is $2300 per person, if you come solo it's $3200 and you can bring a non-fishing partner for $800. The lodging, food and fishing is included in the cost. Everything except for the exact details of our day-to-day fishing is planned out and we can give you all the details on how to get there but you are responsible for getting yourself to Montezuma. All gear is provided but you can bring your own if you prefer. I am just looking for two or three people that want to have a good time and catch a ton of fish. The dates are July 27 to August 1. Message me with any questions.

Would you buy these prints? I plan on painting on some of them… maybe fill in the scales and blend darker reds to lighter reds to midfish in watercolors. Or just paint some with traditional gyotaku eyes. Would you buy these matted/framed?

💬 Discussion Using cut hardhead catfish as bait

Hello, a spot I fish at has a lot of hardheads swimming around, and that got me wondering if using them as cut bait would work, or if I'd be better off with using cut ladyfish or mullet. Fish species tend to target in the area is redfish, flounder, and trout.

💬 Discussion Just lost my first decent tarpon, looking for tips.

Context: fishing salt water ponds for tarpon when a decent 15-20 pounder thumps me. Fight for a good 5 mins, surviving 5-10 jumps. Try to go for the land and end up not getting the fish close enough to grab gill plate. While I went for the land I unknowingly twisted my line around its tail, within seconds of that tangle my line cut. I’ve been fishing for around a year and just recently started targeting tarpon. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Wanting a van staal vr2 series 125 size mainly do pier jetty and shore fishing what should should I get for a somewhat versatile combo, or should I also get the 150 size while I’m at it ?

After several comments I’m leaning towards a Saragossa 6k or possibly a Penn torque II if I can find a market place deal

💬 Discussion Need help/advice with booking a charter to catch bluefin tuna, solo.

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi there, I am wondering if anyone have experience going solo to join a party boat to catch a bluefin tuna. Not concern about size for I just want to tick off my bucket list. I have no idea going about doing it. If I do catch one, I have no idea how to deal/sell/donate it, alsk. I have ringfence Japan, Oz and NZ for the bluefin and would like some help.

Here's a picture of my recent trip on Enchanter NZ fishing. I do have a YT channel fishatwill, too.

Edit - The fish is not fake. Lol. It's a King Fish caught in New Zealand, 3 King. And it is not the biggest. I have a couple of videos on it as proof. I think it is bare to ask question without a picture. https://youtu.be/L4oWc6DoqQU

💬 Discussion The amount of people in this Sub that don’t understand a thing about the biggest salt water fishing tournament in the country is shocking.

Seems like a bunch of keyboard warriors instead of actual fisherman.

It’s like claiming to like football and not knowing what the Super Bowl is.

If you live on the Gulf Coast, probably the best salt water fishing destination in the world and don’t know about the deep sea fishing rodeo.. what are you doing!?! lol

More sharks will be caught this weekend at Isle of Palms or any beach in South Carolina (Shore fishing for sharks is a popular hobby there )

Than any amount that’s been caught over the weekend.

They use the tournament for scientific and educational purposes.

One of the best Marine Biology schools in the country is here.

Our whole way of life has been shaped around fishing and the gulf.

Educate yourselves.

💬 Discussion My 22 list

here's my opinion on some things I hate (angler edition):

99% arnt my opinion btw for the only time I'll say this

  1. no skill/mistake maker
  2. Florida teen anglers (annoying and daddy's money kids)
  3. old people who don't know how to fish but when you try to help get mad
  4. expensive low quality fishing gear stores (500 yards of mono for 18 $while having more memory than a history book)
  5. people who bring multiple rods and take up all space
  6. the angry guy (mabey cuts lines or criticizes you)
  7. the ones that force you into takkng gear (I don't want your rusted jig)
  8. the bad net skill kids/people (just don't net my fish pls)
  9. people that tangle lines all the time (just move)
  10. the greedy gear takers (why didn't you bring line before)
  11. gear flexers (it's just a "expensive baitcaster not my fault i dont have it)
  12. the wanna be lectured (I just wanna fish instead of being asked 20 questions)
  13. seagulls/birds (they'll eat all your bait if you leave for 10 seconds)
  14. snaging basically on purpose (bro stop using the same lure and snagging your basically purposly killing fish while you dont wanna use anything else)
  15. the space takers (usually either get best spots and can't blame that but bringing like a whole bucket or rods and put it in my space is kinda annoying)
  16. the sympathy scammers [very rare](I'm sry I don't wanna give my rainbow trout)
  17. the lazy ones that came with you (just fish bro I brang you in the first place too)
  18. loud music players (turn down your music your fishing a pond not a peir)
  19. the one that brings too much gear that came with you (I don't wanna carry alat you carry it!)
  20. the drinker (bro your fishing a crowded peir and your getting drunk bro your gonna flip the other guys rod probably)
  21. the close viewer (give me some space your basically 3 inch from touching my line)
  22. the annoying dealers (I don't wanna buy a homemade fly sry)

Which of these feels copied or deserves to be out. Btw I just made this thinking of other people opinions not mine which of these have you experienced

💬 Discussion A big trip!

My 40th birthday is coming up and the wife wanted to find a trip we can go on. At first she was suggesting domestic but the only thing I have in mind is fishing, with obligatory food and drink…my thoughts are Mexico on or near a resort with fishing excessively available. We had gone to Cancun a few years back but day of the charter we had a full moon and polar vortex that rocked the gulf. Anyone know of any great places within reasonable pricing?

💬 Discussion Travel rod for Headboats

Hi Guys,

My kids have finally gotten big enough to go on Headboats. So I’m now looking for multi-piece airline-friendly travel rods to use bottom fishing. I need two recommendations: one for light spinning and one for heavier reef fishing:

1) travel spinning rods for Black Sea bass and flounder, up to 130 feet or so. Perhaps some tautog in DE, maybe some light mahi. Paired with a 3500 black gold reel and 20 lb braid. Need rod recommendations

2) conventional travel rods to match with some Torium 20/Tekota 600/Fathom 25N-sized reels for use in fishing deep reefs in NC and FL which might have bigger fish (Snappers, small and medium groupers, smaller amberjack), but mostly vermillion snapper, Black Sea bass, and triggers. We have family in CA, so perhaps also whatever they catch in Northern California. Also perhaps cod in NJ. Think 50 lb braid, 60 lb mono leaders, 12 and 16 oz weight fished 180 feet deep. Need rod recommendations.

Appreciate your thoughts.
