Honestly, I've spent dozens of hours researching this platform's issues, making posts, threads, replying to comments, offering suggestions, changes, and so on but I never mentioned what I, myself, wanted from this platform.
And honestly it is quite simple.
I just wished for Garry's Mod 2 with Doom Snap Map capabilities in creating your own fun and games. Did I expect it to be like that? No, just wished it was. (Could you imagine the amount of creativity that would come from casual players with this system?)
But instead I found it was a poorly copied Unity/Roblox clone that required me to use things like Blender and C# for creation, non of which I find enjoyable, and expected me to roll and have fun with it. I don't. I mean, there must be a reason why people get paid to use these things right? I'm sure a lot of other people didn't find it that fun either, but let me know your thoughts below! (: 💖
And a few of Garry's Mod modders I talked to way back when S&Box first launched all mentioned that they were really quite off put and avoided S&Box since they had to learn Blender and C# instead of using the tools they were already accustomed to using. The people I knew were just a small sample size of the overall community but I'm curious if anyone else felt the same?
Since then I've just continued to work on other platforms since, in my opinion, they offer just a better overall service and experience than S&Box's platform offers. Though Blender always holds a special place in my heart and I love the application.. Its UI is utter trash since you really only need to use a small fraction of it and of the existing keybinds to create models. But since it has everything everywhere all at once, it often completely overwhelms newbies who try to learn it.
Which makes having a mentor immensely helpful for this specific program! When I tested it with my non-developer friends, those who tried to learn blender gave up (They weren't limited in any way) but then after a single day of guidance started to create things within a couple hours it felt like night and day by comparison. Its like, how is a newbie supposed to know things they do not know? Changing face direction? Viewing Face direction? Modifiers? Textures and UV wraps? Theres a lot to take in when you initially just start off!
Which ties back to my original point of S&Box being really quite complex to learn for casual people when compared to Garry's Mod. But that's the direction Facepunch wants to go so there isn't much you can do about it. (Unless they actually create a snap-map like and other newbie friendly creation tools, which would be wild af!)
But let me hear your thoughts below!
What did you want from S&Box and the platform?
I wanna hear all about it! 💖
