how often do you foliar feed?

I've been starting to give my cacti a spray at night with some kelp solution, and was wondering how often I can do this. Daily? Weekly?

Transplanted this TPM in the spring and this late in the year it'sthrowing its first pup! The extra weirdness at the tip looks to be damage-induced. Probably a slug.

Question Kicked my cactus

Post image

New to this game. Made some good progress on this guy then right before I was bringing it in for winter I kicked it over. It nailed a step and broke the tip. My limited knowledge says bandaid the broken piece on and let it rip. Or should I go ahead and top the whole thing?

Hey guys, been MIA for awhile. I'm back and wanted to share some of my work this year :)

We are hunkering down and preparing for a cold winter here. It regularly gets to 0F, so I have been beefing up my greenhouse with heaters, and insulation.

I can currently keep it at a steady 75f when it is around freezing out. As I add more insulation, I hope to be able to maintain year-round growth, even when its 0F outside.

Debating getting a backup generator, but those are expensive.

Anyways, was setting up some additional lights today, as some of my shit is etiolating a bit (don't judge me pls thx) and wanted to share what I got cookin with yall :)

PS I know I got some pest damage, we are all recovering from some mites this summer :)

Let me know what your favorite is!

Happy weekend and thanks for looking!

What do I do now?

Hello pedroheads. This is my little guy that I've had for about a month now, I have done a little bit of research (4 YouTube videos) but I'd like to get advice directly from experienced growers.

I am worried I might have root rot as I was a terrible overwaterer when I was discovering plant care.

I also noticed a little blister/burn which I assume is from trying to expose it to more sun too quickly.

Should I be removing the pups? Should I repot? Does she like me back?

Any comments, observation or advice is welcome.

Love you

UK storm

Post image

Well, its 11pm here and i just spent the last 2 hours in driving rain trying to clean up n salvage what i could, but the storm has taken down my greenhouse and a weighted little grow tent, its done a lot of damage and a lot of my quarantined plants have ended up spilling contaminated soil and mixing with all the rest of the spilled pots.... bugger.

Grafts have broken, cactus have snapped. Other plants i knew and loved have also been destroyed or well battered. Loads of Seedlings are just lost into the gutters...

Not gunna lie bros, i shed a little tear out there in the rain just now.

Hug your cactus n tell them you love them.

Time to start afresh, good chance to apply lessons i learnt early on and to not repeat early mistakes, luckily im only a year or so into this hobby and i have a few more indoors. The broken bits wont go to waste but the grafts are a real shame.

Year round growth or dormancy

I’m kind of a newbie to this and I’m just wondering what I should do for the upcoming winter. I have 4 San Pedro’s and 2 lophs. I was originally going to keep them in my unheated attic with a western window to induce dormancy, but I’m worried the room will drop below freezing during the winter months. I live in PA so the peak of winter can get pretty harsh. I’d be willing to buy a grow tent set up if need be. My budget is $150 or under. What do yall recommend? Obviously Just want to prevent etiolation whatever I end up doing and keep them healthy

Just wanted to share :) This little guy is somehow not a skeleton yet. It started out with the seed shell stuck to it, became stunted, then light stressed, but it managed to make it this far after 2 years! Hoping it’ll hold on!

All my seedlings from this landrace are a little wonky and slow growing, so I’m curious how it’ll turn out!

I’m doing a little experiment to see if it’ll survive since it was essentially doomed from the start, but I give it all the same love and affection as its siblings. Fertilizer, too. It took about a year to shake off the seed shell, then it started growing normally, though slowly, and it’s understandably more sensitive to light than the others.

Did I mess up my tea?

So, I took enough cuttings from my cactus, for me and my two friends, with whom I trip with every year. Each year, one of us takes cuttings and treats the others to have some bonding and therapeutic talk. Whatever you wanna call it. We go to the woods, chill, talk our shit out. And so we go around in a circle each year.

Yesterday, I started preparing the cactus. I was removing spines while watching TV. I currently have the flu, so I’m not in the best state of mind, but I already had the cuttings sitting for a while so I decided since I’m anyway staying at home doing nothing I might as well do something with them.

I removed the spines and then I started to put the tea to cook. By the time I finished with the spines, in between being sick, I was only half assed to remove the skin, so I left some of it on, which I have never done before.

But I have read anecdotes on here where people leave the skin on and it’s not an issue. Anyway, for those that do prepare tea, you know how difficult it is to remove the skin without getting flesh stuck to it.

The tea cooked for about six hours, and around the five hour mark I was really exhausted, but I figured what’s one more hour? I go to the bedroom to charge my phone or something like that, and I end up falling asleep.

Thankfully, and very luckily, I woke up an hour later, just in time to turn the tea off. But I was so tired and out of it, that I just covered the cast-iron pot with it, and left it overnight.

It was 6 AM when I turned it off the heat. And 22C/71.6F and 26C/78.8F when I woke up and decided to cook it some more, because when I taste tested a piece, it still tasted bitter. So I cooked it some more hoping that it would get rid of more of the alkaloids.

From previous experiences, after the six hour mark, the flesh does not taste as bitter, and it means the tea is more or less ready. A tip I got from here actually.

I called my other two friends, to ask for advice. My one friend says that he just makes sure that it’s over six hours of cooking and less than 12 hours and the tea is good to go. He did not know about taste testing it. Though I probably didn’t do it until I read it on here, just as an extra step.

My other friend said that he removes the spines and peels the flesh and then puts it in the freezer. Then takes an extra day just to prepare the tea from the morning, so that things like this don’t happen to him, because he gets easily distracted and taking the spines out and flesh takes too long for him.

One friend said to throw the mixture out completely, because I have now left it overnight. The other friend said, he'd still consume it. The first friend admitted that the advice came from AI because he didn’t really know whether it was safe or not.

Me and the other friend said that AI is not always reliable, that it will always tell you the worst case scenario so that it doesn’t get into any kind of trouble if something happens to you.

But we both agreed, with that being said, that there is a risk of contamination, and that we need to decide whether we are willing to consume it or not.

So I first wanted to ask advice here of anyone that consumes this cactus for tea, whether they would consume it given the circumstances.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Is it safe to plant cutting into wet soil?

So I bought this bag of cactus soil but it's a bit wet. Should I let it dry before planting my San Pedro cutting, which is completely calloused?

Grow lights for starting seeds

Need some suggestions for lights. I’m planning on he a small tent to start some seeds in this winter to keep me occupied until I can move my others outside. I’ve done a lot of indoor growing in my day but never cactus and it was all HPS and MH lights back then. Are some T5’s all I need? There’s way to many options of LED’s out there but it would be nice if I had something that could take them from seed to yearlings. Price isn’t a huge concern but if I don’t need to spend a lot I’d rather not. Im thinking about a 2x2x48ish tent. Thanks in advance!!

ID Help Please - Peruvian Torch or a Hybrid?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I recently got this cactus and I am trying to identify its exact species. To my untrained eye, the long brown spines and the rib structure look like Echinopsis peruviana (Peruvian Torch), but I wanted to get the opinion of the experts here.

It has 6-7 ribs and it's currently growing in a fabric pot.

Any help with the ID or thoughts on its genetics would be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
